It is a self-governing body and the overall supervision of the state is exercised by the Ministry of Education. It is a contemporary center of scientific knowledge, technological research and innovation which consists of 5 Faculties and 8 Departments that operate in 4 towns within the Region of Epirus: in Arta (seat of the Institute), the town with the great ancient and byzantine monuments and the famous Bridge of Arta; in Preveza, the littoral town of poetry; in Igoumenitsa, the port-city with the natural beauties; and in Ioannina, the city of the arts and literature. Over the last years, TEIEP has managed a budget of over 35 million Euros as LP or partner in several projects funded by EU or/& national resources. Established in 2006, the Laboratory of Knowledge & Intelligent Computing (KIC) is an active Laboratory of the Department of Computer Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Epirus in Arta. KIC-TEIEP main research areas and expertise include knowledge and intelligent techniques, advanced software development techniques, computational intelligence and soft computing techniques, advanced signal processing, Intelligent Information Systems. However, despite the main focus on the above mentioned research areas, the activities of the KIC-TEIEP are not limited strictly to them. Staffed by four experienced researchers with Ph.D., three post doc researchers, nine post graduated researchers and 12 students, KIC-TEIEP is acknowledged • because its members introduced and further developed the Fuzzy Cognitive Map technology and its usage for medical diagnosis, decision support and modeling complex systems and enterprise models, • because its members introduced and further developed new advanced algorithms and computational intelligence methods that have been applied to a variety of industrial applications • because its members have proposed new technologies and advanced usage of innovative methodologies that have been applied to a variety of biomedical, environmental, logistics, cultural and touristic applications • because of its members’ participation in joint committees of experts and other Higher Education evaluation groups • due to the participation of its members in numerous international scientific Conferences • because its members organize or support the organization of scientific events (lectures, seminars, symposiums, conferences, workshops) and undertake the publication of scientific results and books • and also due to the contribution of its members to the European collaboration through numerous research and development projects related to several subjects and areas of interest. More specifically, KIC-TEIEP actively participated in projects co-funded by programmes such as INTERREG, South East Europe, FP7, IPA Adriatic, GREECE-ITALY 2007-2014, Greece-Czech Republic, MED, Lifelong Learning. In addition, members of KIC-TEIEP participated, over the years, individually to projects implemented by third parties, thus transferring the knowledge and the experiences gained to the rest of the KIC-TEIEP members. So, through the participation in these projects, KIC-TEIEP gained great experience in R&D projects and developed close cooperation with greek and foreign academic institutes, research centres, technological institutions, local and regional public and private bodies and organisations and industries. Here below follows a non-exhaustive list of Projects to which KIC-TEIEP contributed or contributes till today: Ongoing Projects SAIL, ICT System Addressed to Integrated Logistic management and decision support for intermodal port and dry port facilities Marie Curie Actions - Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) CaseMaker: Innovative ICT-platform to enhance case-based teaching and learning (CASEMKR) www.casemaker.dk LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMME (LLP) TEN ECOPORT - Transnational ENhancement of ECOPORT8 network www.tenecoport.eu SOUTH EAST EUROPE Transnational Cooperation Programme Intelligent System for Automatic CardioTocoGrafic Data Analysis and Evaluation using State of the Art Computational Intelligence Techniques Bilateral R&D Cooperation Greece-Czech Republic (2011-2013) Local employment pacts focused on the needs of the labor market of the Prefecture of Arta www.topsa-arta.gr Operational Program HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT Completed INNOVA NET - International centre of competences for Innovation in the Mediterranean countries www.innova- net.eu European Territorial Cooperation Programme Greece-Italy 2007-2013 APC - The Adriatic Port Community www.apcwindow.eu IPA Adriatic Cross-border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013 Intelligent System for medical data analysis and evaluation based on computational intelligence techniques Transnational Cooperation Greece-Czech Republic (2005-2007) META-KNOWLEDGE: A tool for the best exploitation of research and technological results and for the know-how and Innovation Transfer to the Region of Western Greece Regional Innovation Pole of Western Greece SFINX – Geographical Information System (G.I.S.) for an effective prevention and management of natural disasters Community Initiative Programme INTERREG IIIA Greece-Italy 2000-2006 INNOVA – Actions for the Transfer of Innovation in Common Strategic Sectors Community Initiative Programme INTERREG IIIA Greece-Italy 2000-2006 *MOTHER - Mother Language over the History www.womanway.eu Community Initiative Programme INTERREG IIIA Greece-Italy 2000-2006 *DRYSTONE ROUTES – A network for sustainability and promotion of the drystone heritage in Zagori and Salento www.drystonesroutes.eu Community Initiative Programme INTERREG IIIA Greece-Italy 2000-2006 In the framework of these projects, KIC-TEIEP developed activities related to: Research and Innovation Smart Specialization Design & Development of Advanced Information Systems (logistics area and Port Community systems) Design & Development of Decision Support Systems (DSS) [2] Laboratory of Knowledge & Intelligent Computing ▪ Dept. of Computer Engineering ▪ T.E.I. of Epirus 47100 Kostakioi Artas ▪ Tel.: +30 26810 50234 ▪ Fax: +30 26810 50330 Email: [email protected] & [email protected] ▪ Website: http://kic.teiep.gr Technology Transfer, Competitiveness of SMEs & Enterprises Further Education & Training approaches Geo-Informatics & Environment (including GIS & WebGIS development) Natural and cultural heritage Design & Development of IT Applications promoting cultural/touristic content (including Cultural content digitization; Creation of thematic routes & interactive maps using GIS; Creation of Data Bases; Development of web portals) KIC lab has created a strong network of collaboration with all the local and regional authorities and key stakeholders.
