CHAPTER XI1 TRADE AND INDUSTRY A FEW years ago the peasants of a village not far from St. Petersburg were hapalting in meadows by the riverside when to their amazement they saw a she-bear Growth Of with two cubs swimming towards them across Industrialism. the stream. The bear landed, and taking no notice of the peasants, some of whom fled in terror while others vainly gave chase with scythes and other implements, pursued into the nearest forest the way it had so oddly taken. Probably the ancestors of these peasants would have shown more alertness and resource in dealing with the bear. Long ago in the early ages of their history the main occupa- tion of the Russians was the capture of wild animals and the sale of their skins. This occupation constituted, in fact, the basis of Russian trade. The many wandered about the forest hunting or gathering the wax and honey of wild bees, while the comparatively few who lived along the great trade routes bought up the products of the chase and sold them in exchange for the varied products of a higher civilisation, from gaudy beads to rich silks and gold ornaments, to the foreign traders who came sailing inland from outlying seas. It was this trading class that with the help of foreign corsairs founded the Russian State. But that period has receded into the dim distance of legend. In the Novgorod region a bear nowadays is a rare and per- plexing interruption in the routine of husbandry. Hunting from being the staple business of the people has dwindled down to the sport of the few, of the proprietors of the large estates, and of the members of sporting clubs, the officials, judges, and business men who come down from the city for week-ends to shoot in preserves guarded by gamekeepers and foresters, And not often does a bear or an elk or any wild 373 Russia of the Russians animal but a fox or a hare fall to the lot of the average sports- man in the greater part of European Russia.

Ilya Yefimovich Repin (Chuguyev, Ukraine 1844 - Kuokkala (modern Repino, near St. Petersburg) 1930) Studies for Figures on the Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg signed in Cyrillic (lower center); authenticated in Russian ‘The drawing of Professor I.E. Repin “Nevskii Prospekt” Spb 1891 I verify, his daughter Vera I.L. Repina Kuokkala Penati 1937.’ (on reverse) charcoal on paper 29.7 x 40.5 cm (11¼ by 16 in) Nevsky prospect is the main thoroughfare of St. Petersburg. It is named after Saint Alexander Nevsky, the thirteenth century Grand Prince of Novgorod. Planned by Peter the Great (1672-1725), the avenue runs from the Admiralty to the Moscow Railway Station and on to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. Many of the stunning and monumental buildings that lined the street during Ilya Yefimovich Repin’s time still exist today, such as the Rastrelliesque Stroganov Palace (1752-54), the huge neo-Classical Kazan Cathedral (1801- 11), the monument to Catherine the Great (1873), the enormous eighteenth century shopping mall, Gostiny Dvor, the Russian National Library (1795) and the Anichkov Bridge (1841-42). Indeed, it is a street that has caught the imagination of artists, photographers and writers alike; the hectic life of the avenue was described by Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) in his story The Nevsky Prospect, published in 1835. This work is a preparatory sketch for the pencil drawing, Nevsky Prospect, At Dominiks Place (State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg) Many parallels can be drawn not only between the stylistic approach of Repin’s drawing and the Impressionists but also between their chosen subject matter.
