4 Your word alone is solid ground, the mighty rock on which we build. In every line the truth is found, and every page with glory filled.

Reformation Song Page 77 Welcome “I would simply say, Mr. Chairman, that this nominee is really not someone who this country is supposed to be about.” A United States Senator, on June 7, 2017, opposing the approval of a nominee for public office because he admitted to believing, when questioned, that non- Christians will be eternally condemned.

Dear Brothers (and Sisters!), As always, we welcome you in the name of Jesus Christ for the celebration of the gospel that we share. Our prayer is that these few days together will encourage, strengthen, and instruct you. The recent public comment quoted above brings us right to the particular topic of our gathering. This year, we pay special attention to the distinctness of the church from the world. Part of our fulfilling Christ’s Great Com- mission is following His example of faithfulness in the face of opposition and marginalization. Many brothers and sisters around the world have great experience with this today—from North Korea to Cuba, Iran to Saudi Arabia. In America, too, we have an ugly history of propagating sinful racial division even within churches. Our churches should have been obedient opponents of this, but too many failed in being distinct from the world’s prejudices and hatreds. Now, in God’s strange providence, He is making sure to underline His people’s distinctness from the world, even if too many of us are reluctant to do so. And yet, we must remember that Jesus prayed for the Father to preserve us even as He left us in a hostile world (consider His prayer in John 17). Surely we can trust His provision for us, even when all men speak evil of us. 8 We love pastors. We are pastors—and if you’re reading Conferences come and go, but every once in a while this at the conference, then you’re probably either God uses them to put heart in His under-shepherds and so a pastor or a pastor-in-training. Either way, we’ve come bless His people. We pray this will be such a conference. together once again to thank you, to challenge you, We pray that we’ll all tune our hearts and minds to Him to instruct you, and to help you in any way we can in your as we think and talk about preaching the gospel of the Lord great calling. And since we’ve last met, God has called home to Himself our On behalf of Ligon Duncan and Albert Mohler dear brother RC Sproul. We plan to have some time together acknowledging God’s goodness through RC, reflecting on his ministry. Once again, we have five younger friends with us as plenary speakers—Thabiti Anyabwile, Matt Chandler, David Platt, HB Charles, and Kevin DeYoung. Each of them has become dear to us, as they’ve faithfully shepherded congregations and inspired and instructed other pastors. We look forward to hearing from them. Other blessings at this conference will include, Lord willing, seeing old friends, the incredibly rich singing led by our brother Bob Kauflin, seminars, gather- ings, exhibitors worth knowing about, and books, books, books! Bookstores, book recommendations, book reviews, and—best of all—book giveaways! We are convinced that the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been misrepresented, misunderstood, and marginalized in many churches and among many who claim the name of Christ. Compro- mise of the Gospel has led to the preaching of false gospels, the seduction of many minds and movements, and the weakening of the church’s Gospel witness. As in previous moments of theological and spiritual crisis in the church, we believe that the answer to this confusion and compromise lies in a comprehensive recovery and reaffirmation of the Gospel—and in Chris- tians banding together in Gospel churches that display God’s glory in this fallen world. We are also brothers united in deep concern for the church and the Gospel. This concern is specifically addressed to certain trends within the church today. We are concerned about the tendency of so many churches to substitute technique for truth, therapy for theology, and management for ministry. We are also concerned that God’s glorious purpose for Christ’s church is often eclipsed in concern by so many other issues, programs, technologies, and priorities. Furthermore, confusion over crucial questions concerning the authority of the Bible, the meaning of the Gospel, and the nature of truth itself has gravely weakened the church in terms of its witness, its work, and its identity. We stand together for the Gospel—and for a full and gladdening recovery of the Gospel in the church. We are convinced that such a recovery will be evident in the form of faithful Gospel churches, each bearing faithful witness to the glory of God and the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 20 Article I Article IV Article VII Article IX We affirm that the sole authority We affirm the centrality of exposi- We affirm that Jesus Christ is true We affirm that the Gospel of Jesus for the Church is the Bible, verbally tory preaching in the church God and true Man, in perfect, Christ is God’s means of bringing inspired, inerrant, infallible, and and the urgent need for a recovery undiluted, and unconfused union salvation to His people, that sinners totally sufficient and trustworthy. of biblical exposition and the public throughout his incarnation and now are commanded to believe the We deny that the Bible is a mere reading of Scripture in worship. eternally.
