5 6 The Slip End of Yesteryear! Derrick Worsley—90th celebrations

Ken Crossett has told us he belongs to a group on Facebook entitled “The Luton I Remember”. The group talks about Luton from years gone by and often post photos dating from the days when photography first started up to the late seventies. A few months ago Geoff Cox joined the group, Geoff was a photographer with Luton News and he has been posting a lot of very interesting pictures. The photo on the opposite page is a photograph Geoff recently posted, it is an aerial shot taken during the ceremony when Derrick and Josie would like to send their thanks to everyone who helped with the the then Transport Minister, Harold surprise party to celebrate Derrick’s 90th Watkinson, began the work on the birthday at the Social Club and for all the construction of the M1 on the 24th March friends and family who helped make it such 1958 - Inauguration Day. The marquee a special occasion. where the ceremony took place, is probably in the line where the bridge in Church Road is today. Stockwood House is towards the top left and in the bottom left, the roof of the lych gate at the Church can be seen. The photo also shows the old line of Church Road going down past the Church and the field past the trees of the Church, which is now the Peter Edwards playing field. The photograph is shown courtesy of the Luton News Archive. Thanks to Ken (and to Geoff). Does anyone else have any interesting old views of the Parish? If so let us know…

17 Museum of Vintage Hairdressing Items

I have been collecting hairdressing memorabilia for many years, and now I have found a home for some of the items in my Salon in Elm Avenue. It started when a customer found a Hairdressing Book published in the '30s, for 30p in a jumble sale, and gave it to me. (Which I have since misplaced unfortunately). From then on, I decided to collect small items for posterity. They have been stored in my loft until I knew where and how to display them. I have now been able to put together a nice selection in my small cabinet at the Salon (below). (Maybe I will graduate to a bigger cabinet, or.....who knows!) Thanks to many clients who have found things whilst in the process of clearing out their or their parents ‘lofts when moving house, and who have

donated their vintage hair dryers, tongs, etc to me, knowing I have a sentimentality about our precious history of hairdressing. (also see new cabinet—above) Please come and look and reminisce! Kay McIlroy, Charisma

It was a pleasure to go along to Aley Green Church in July and talk to the lovely people that had come to the Take Time meeting and hear about my visit to Belarus in January. We started with some singing and prayers and I then showed them some of the many photos I had taken from my distribution trip to help give out the shoeboxes to the needy children in Belarus. There were a lot of interesting questions asked and hopefully I was able to answer them satisfactorily. Aley Green Church does make up shoeboxes but for Romania and the boxes are sent to help families (also a very good cause) so it was good to tell them about the children who receive our boxes and how pleased they are with them. It was a very humbling experience in Belarus and one I shall never forget. After the talk the ladies had organised a delicious strawberry tea in the kitchen area and we were all treated to scones, cakes, biscuits and pots of tea all laid out on beautiful china cups and plates. Photos in the next column. Thank you for the hospitality shown to me and for the generous donation of £110 for Samaritans Purse which Sue Briggs was collected after the talk.

24 A Short Love Affair!

At the turn of the year we offered a home to a wonderful Springer Spaniel, named Boycie. He had been a working farm dog for the previous seven years. He was a delightful and loving companion and we valued his good nature and joy of life. Our grandchildren adored him and he was really good with them. During his short time with us he had become widely known throughout the Village. Unfortunately Boycie suffered some sort of brain trauma and attacked me one evening, causing a serious injury to my face. This has needed a great deal of on-going medical attention. I am sure he did not mean me any harm, but we have had to return him to his previous owners. We miss him terribly. I would like to thank the many people who have helped me through this difficult time and to tell them that their concerned calls, flowers and cards have been greatly appreciated. I would like specially to thank Bill and Mary Bolt, Margaret Duncan, Pam King and Carol Beeton Lesley and Ian Brand and Rosemary Wickens for their support as well as my family including Deb, Shaz, Jane and Paul and, of course, my daughter Lee. Both my husband, Simon, and daughter, Lee, have been towers of strength, without which I know that I would have found it difficult to overcome the emotional stress which accompanied the physical injury. My sincere thanks to you all. Carol Patterson 25 Pub Pages
