Thanksgiving

I wish everyone a safe, happy–and a delicious!–Thanksgiving, while I encourage everyone to recall the truly religious nature of this national holiday. Let us enjoy the festivities–but let us not forget the reason for this national feast, so beautifully explained by President Abraham Lincoln in the first Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1863:

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.... No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God.... It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States . . . to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

Let us then truly take time this Thanksgiving to count our blessings and to thank our generous God in prayer for all the good things he has given us–and let us not forget the poor and the lonely in our prayers, meals and contributions.

I encourage you to attend Mass on Thanksgiving Day wherever you are. Remember, the word “Eucharist” is a Greek word meaning “thanksgiving,” since especially in the Mass we offer thanks to the Father in the Spirit for the gift of in His Son.

I remain, your servant in Christ Jesus, Father Don

PARISH CHARITIES

World Day of the Poor - Next Sunday Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our Holy Father Francis has called us to observe the second World Day of the Poor on Sunday, November 18. He has asked us once again to focus our attention on those throughout the world and in our own Diocese who are suffering from material or spiritual poverty. Throughout the Sacred Scriptures we are told of God's special love for the poor: "This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him" (Ps 34:6). There is poverty all around us. Jesus himself tells us in Matthew's : "The poor you will always have with you" (Mt 26:11). But, do we recognize them? Our Holy Father is calling us, as Jesus did, to hear and respond to the cry of the poor. How can we do this? One way is to participate in parish ministries that directly serve the poor. In addition, I invite you to join our Diocesan efforts, through Catholic Charities, to serve those who are hungry or homeless, the sick or elderly, and prisoners or newcomers to our country. As we reach out to the poor in love, our actions reflect the source of all love, Jesus Christ. Led and guided by His Holy Spirit, may our works of charity bring us and all those we serve closer to God and one another. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington For more information on how you might respond to the call to serve the poor and lonely, visit the St. Charles website.
