The S.S. Ellison Onizuka is a NG-16 cargo delivery mission shuttle serving the International Space Station, according to the West Hawaii Today article. Northrop Grumman Corporation announced on July 13 that it was proud to name the NG-16 Cygnus spacecraft after Ellison Onizuka. It is the company's tradition to name each Cygnus spacecraft after an individual who has played a pivotal role in human spaceflight. Onizuka was selected in honor of his status as the first Asian American astronaut to reach space. (Credit:NASA) Onizuka's NASA career began in January 1978, when he was selected for the astronaut program. Completing his training in August 1979, he went on to work on orbiter test and checkout teams, as well as launch support crews at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. His first spaceflight experience came on Jan. 24, 1985, when he flew as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery for STS 51-C—the first space shuttle mission for the Department of Defense. Onizuka, who spent nearly his entire life flying in air and in space, lost his life during the STS 51-L mission when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986. EDUCATION: Attended Florida elementary and secondary schools and is a graduate of Miami Edison High School, Miami, Florida; received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Auburn University in 1958. ORGANIZATIONS: Associate Fellow, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Fellow, American Astronautical Society; and Member, Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and the U.S. Naval Institute. Recent studies such as Eric Porter’s What is this Thing Called Jazz? have begun to document these musicians’ struggles to articulate their aesthetic philosophies, to support and educate their communities, to create new audiences, and to establish economic and cultural capital. Through studying these histories, we see new dimensions of these artists’ creativity and resourcefulness, and we also gain a richer understanding of the music. Both their larger goals and the forces working against them—most notably the powerful legacies of systemic racism—all come into sharper focus. Shifting Identities of Taiko Music in North America }ibshitaka Zerada National Museum of Ethnology Many Japanese communities in North America hold a Bon (or O- bon) festival every summer, when the spirit of the deceased is summoned to the world ofthe living fbr entertainment of dance and music.i At such festivals, one often encounters a group of energetic and smiling perfbrmers playing various types of drums in tightly choreographed movements. The roaring sound of drums resembles `rolling thunder' and the joyous energy emanating from perfbrmers is captivating. The music they play is known as taiko, and approximately 150 groups are actively engaged in performing this music in North America today.2 This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the development of taiko music and to analyze the relationship between taiko music and the construction of identity among Asians in North America. 71aiko is a Japanese term that refers in its broadest sense to drums in general. In order to distinguish them from those of foreign origin, Japanese drums are often referred to as wadaiko, literally meaning `Japanese drum'. Although the roots ofwadaiko music may be traced to the drum and flute ensembles that accompanied Shinto rituals, agricultural rites, and Bon festivals in Japan for centuries, wadaiko has come to mean a new drumming style that developed after World War II out of the music played by such ensembles. North American taiko is based largely on this post-War wadaiko muslc, contrary to lts anclent lmage. Madaiko music is distinguished from previous drumming traditions in Japan by a style of communal playing known as kumidaiko, involving a multiple number of drummers and a set of taiko drums in various shapes and sizes. -

Through the analysis of compositions and performances by artists in Japan and the United States, I reveal how Japanese musical forms like hōgaku and matsuri-bayashi have been melded with non-Japanese styles such as jazz. I also demonstrate how the art form first appeared as performed by large ensembles, but later developed into a wide variety of other modes of performance that included small ensembles and soloists. Additionally, I discuss the spread of wadaiko from Japan to the United States, examining the effect of interactions between artists in the two countries on the creation of repertoire; in this way, I reveal how a musical genre develops in an intercultural environment. -

NASA Reflects America’s Changing Opportunities; Social, NASA Impacts US Culture Education: Inspiring Cultural, and Students as Only NASA Can Educational Legacies Social, Cultural, and Educational Legacies 459 NASA Reflects The Space Shuttle, which began flying in 1981 and ushered in an entirely new human spaceflight program, was a watershed for cultural diversity America’s within NASA and had substantial cultural impact outside the realm of Changing spaceflight. In the 1950s and 1960s, opportunities for American women and minorities were limited as they were often segregated into pink Opportunities; collar and menial jobs. NASA’s female and minority employees faced NASA Impacts similar obstacles. The Space Shuttle Program opened up opportunities US Culture for these groups—opportunities that did not exist during Projects Mercury and Gemini or the Apollo and Skylab Programs. NASA’s transformation was a direct consequence of a convergence of events Jennifer Ross-Nazzal Shannon Lucid that happened in the 1960s and 1970s and continued through the Helen Lane following 3 decades. These included: public policy changes instituted on the national level; the development of a spacecraft whose physical capabilities departed radically from the capsule concept; and an increase in the number of women and minorities holding degrees in the fields of science and engineering, making them attractive candidates for the space agency’s workforce. Over the course of the program, the agency’s demographics reflected this transformation: women and minorities were incorporated into the Astronaut Corps and other prominent technical and administrative positions. The impact of NASA’s longest-running program extends beyond these dramatic changes. -

Smith Resources, Science, and Industry Division Summary On August 9, 2005, the space shuttle Discovery successfully completed the first of two “Return to Flight” (RTF) missions — STS-114. It was the first shuttle launch since the February 1, 2003, Columbia tragedy. NASA announced on July 27, 2005, the day after STS-114’s launch, that a second RTF mission has been indefinitely postponed because of a problem that occurred during Discovery’s launch that is similar to what led to the loss of Columbia. Two shuttle-related facilities in Mississippi and Louisiana were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, which may further delay the next shuttle launch. It currently is expected some time in 2006. This report discusses the Columbia tragedy, the Discovery mission, and issues for Congress regarding the future of the shuttle. The Loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia The space shuttle Columbia was launched on its STS-107 mission on January 16, 2003. After completing a 16-day scientific research mission, Columbia started its descent to Earth on the morning of February 1, 2003. As it descended from orbit, approximately 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Kennedy Space Center, FL, Columbia broke apart over northeastern Texas.
