Chapter 2 Core Basics
Chapter 2 Core Basics In this chapter we introduce some of the basic concepts that are important for understanding what is to follow. We also introduce a few of the fundamental operations that are involved in the vast majority of useful programs. 2.1 Literals and Types Section 1.3 introduced the string literal. A string literal is a collection of characters enclosed in quotes. In general, a literal is code that exactly represents a value. In addition to a string literal, there are numeric literals. There are actually a few different types of numeric values in Python. There are integer values which correspond to whole numbers (i.e., the countable numbers that lack a fractional part). In Python, an integer is known as an int. A number that can have a fractional part is called a float (a float corresponds to a real number). For example, 42 is an int while 3.14 is a float. The presence of the decimal point makes a number a float—it doesn’t matter if the fractional part is zero. For example, the literal 3.0, or even just 3., are also floats1 despite the fact that these numbers have fractional parts of zero.2 There are some important differences between how computers work with ints and floats. For example, ints are stored exactly in the computer while, in general, floats are only stored approximately. This is a consequence of the fact that we are entering numbers as decimal numbers, i.e., numbers in the base 10 counting system, but the computer stores these numbers internally as a finite number of binary (base 2) digits. -

Learning aids enhance one's learning abilities and help to increase one's learning potential. They may include books, diagram, computer, recordings, notes, strategies, or any other appropriate items. In this paper we would review the types of modulo operations and represent the knowledge which we have been known with the easiest ways. The modulo operation is finding of the remainder when dividing. The modulus operator abbreviated “mod” or “%” in many programming languages is useful in a variety of circumstances. It is commonly used to take a randomly generated number and reduce that number to a random number on a smaller range, and it can also quickly tell us if one number is a factor of another. If we wanted to know if a number was odd or even, we could use modulus to quickly tell us by asking for the remainder of the number when divided by 2. Modular exponentiation is a type of exponentiation performed over a modulus. The operation of modular exponentiation calculates the remainder c when an integer b rose to the eth power, bᵉ, is divided by a positive integer m such as c = be mod m [1]. -

A Tour of the Squeak Object Engine A Tour of the Squeak Object Engine Tim Rowledge, [email protected] Introduction This chapter is intended to explain some basics of how a Virtual Machine (VM) works, why a VM is useful, what it does for the Squeak programmer and user, and how the Squeak VM might develop in the future. What is a Virtual Machine and why do we need one? A Virtual Machine provides us with a pretense of being a machine other than the actual hardware in use. Using one allows systems that behave differently than the host hardware to run as if on hardware designed for them. The term Object Engine is less commonly used but is a useful concept that includes the lowest system areas of the langauge environment running on the VM. Since there is often some flux in the definition of which components are within the actual VM and which are part of the supported environment, Object Engine is useful as a more inclusive term. The term Virtual Machine is used in several ways. When IBM refer to VM/CMS they are referring to a way of making a mainframe behave as if it is many machines, so that programs can assume they have total control even though they do not. Intel provide a somewhat similar facility in the x86 architecture(?), referred to as Virtual Mode. This sort of VM is a complete hardware simulation, often supported at the lowest level by the hardware. Another sort of VM is the emulator - SoftWindows for the Mac, Acorn's !PC, Linux's WINE are good examples - where another machine and/or OS is simulated to allow a Mac user to run Windows programs, an Acorn RiscPC or a Linux machine to run Windows98 programs and so on. -

Each paradigm category contains rules about how the program is built. Comparing programming paradigms and languages is important, because it lets developers make more informed decisions when it comes to choosing the right technology for a system. Making meaningful comparisons between paradigms and languages is challenging, because the subjects of comparison are often so dissimilar that the process is not always straightforward, or does not always yield particularly valuable results. Therefore, multiple avenues of comparison must be explored in order to get meaningful information about the pros and cons of these technologies. This thesis looks at the difference between the object-oriented and functional programming paradigms on a higher level, before delving in detail into a development process that consisted of reimplementing parts of an object- oriented system into functional code. Using results from major comparative studies, exploring high-level differences between the two paradigms’ tools for modular programming and general program decompositions, and looking at the development process described in detail in this thesis in light of the aforementioned findings, a comparison on multiple levels was done. -
