Ed Keywords: Argumentative elements, Toulmin’s method, students’ writing This study aims to reveal the argumentative elements which are used by the students in their argumentative essay. In the argumentative context, there are six elements which should be fulfilled in order to construct a convincing argument; they are claim, data, warrant, backing, rebuttal, and qualifier. Moreover, in this study the researcher uses descriptive qualitative as research design. In addition, the data analyzed are the students’ argumentative essay in writing III program and it classified as good essays. Afterwards, in order to obtain the proper and systematic data, the researcher becomes the main instrument. In here, the researcher adopts Toulmin’s theory to examine the argumentative elements used in students’ argumentative essay. The results show that all of the six elements which have been proposed by Toulmin are used to build the argument. However, the students have their own way to construct their thought into an argument. Therefore, there are several essays do not apply all the argumentative elements. Nevertheless, all of the essays contain the base elements, those elements are claim, data and warrant. Another element namely backing, is also consistently involved in students’ essays in order to strengthen the data. Additionally, the two supporting elements rebuttal and qualifier are required when the students want to limit and anticipate the counter argument which potentially can weaken the writers’ argument. It is important to have a deep understanding towards Toulmin’s theory of argumentation, since in determining each of element needs high consideration. Local languages or vernaculars are the assets of a country that needed to be maintained. The trend of using foreign languages and slangs had put aside the use of local languages. This research was aimed at describing the maintenance of local languages in the area of Jayapura regency. This qualitative study used Bogdan and Taylor model (1992:22 ), and Moleong (2003:3), confirmed that the procedure of qualitative research will result in descriptive data in the form of speech and writing, as well as behavior that can be observed from the people (subjects). The results of the research indicated that the number of local language speakers in Jayapura regency started to run out. The reason behind this is that many parents did not use the local language at the home; and therefore, the children used other languages. The young people tend to use Papuan Malay language or slang and Indonesian, instead of the local languages. Keywords: Local language maintenance, cultural identity, and perception of the society. INTRODUCTIONS A local language is firstly present in families, and then it is developed by the speakers to be spoken in the society (Fitrahayunitisna & Zulvarina, 2017).     392 Skou 13 Valency changing processes As with many, but by no means all, languages, there are a variety of morphosyntactic means of indicating that a verb is being used with more, or less, than the number of arguments that it subcategorises for in its lexical entry. There are no morphological devices for lowering the number of core arguments of a verb (passives or antipassives, reflexives or reciprocals), as is common in languages of New Guinea, but there are a number of ways of accomplishing these goals with periphrastic contructions or multi-verb predicates. A putative passive uses a complex periphrastic construction with serial verbs; the reflexive construction maximally uses nòe ‘body’ as a marker of reflexivity, though the only indication that the valency is other than canonically bivalent is that possessive marking on a subject-possessed body (or body part) may be omitted. The reciprocal construction too appears to be a subset of a normal construction of nominal coordination, but there are some small morphosyntactic possibilities that allow us to think of this as representing a separate morphosyntactic category of its own. Periphrastic constructions are also used to indicate causation for most verbs, a valency- increasing device, but applicatives have their own dedicated suffix, and so are the only valency- changing process that involves bound morphology. Partly this is definitional: an applicative must involve morphology on the verb, otherwise it is termed a serial verb construction (which is also a possibility that is realised in Skou, and discussed more in 12.4). Nonetheless, the applicative is interesting for genuinely having bound morphological instantiation (reflecting a proto-Skou morpheme * , with approximately the same meaning: applicative/dative), where the other valency changing devices do not.

Pendekatan yang digunakan ialah perhitungan jarak kosa kata yang dikemukakan Seguy dengan persentase yang disarankan Guitar. Perhitungan ini diperkuat pula dengan penarikan garis-garis isoglos sebagaimana digunakan oleh Chambers & Trudgill. Interpretasi dipakai unsur-unsur bahasa, yaitu gejala-gejala kebahasaan, baik fonologis maupun morfologis dan latar belakang sejarah, geografi, dan sosial budaya. Hasil yang diperoleh antara lain (1) terdapat tujuh bahasa dalam lima wilayah kecamatan itu, (2) terdapat saling pengaruh antara bahasa-bahasa itu, (3) bahasa-bahasa yang ada sekarang ini merupakan hasil asimilasi dan hasil perkembangan bahasa-bahasa pada masa lalu. Dalam kaitan dengan tujuh bahasa itu, penelitian terdahulu menyatakan bahwa antara Kayu Pulau dan Tobati merupakan bahasa tersendiri, demikian halnya Kemtuk di Sabron dan Moi di Dosai-Hasil perhitungan jarak kosa kata dalam penelitian ini hanya sebesar 511 untuk Sabron-Dosai dan 54% untuk Kayu Pulau-Tobati. Terdapatnya rumpun bahasa Austronesia di Teluk Yos Sudarso, menurut penelitian terdahulu (yakni Orru, Kayu Pulau, dan Tobati), diasumsikan sebagai akibat pengaruh yang kuat dari sebelah barat, yakni pengaruh Ternate-Tidore melalui Raja Ampat dan Biak. Dengan pengaruh-pengaruh kuat tersebut, bahasa-bahasa di teluk itu yang dulunya diperkirakan serumpun dengan bahasa-bahasa di batik gunung Dobonsolo (yakni bahasa-bahasa Irian), akhirnya didominasi oleh rumpun Austronesia.
