S Joint Response to Accusations of Harassment, Misconduct and Bullying by Men Within the Field of Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality
MenEngage Alliance and North American MenEngage Network (NAMEN)’s Joint Response to accusations of harassment, misconduct and bullying by men within the field of engaging men and boys in gender equality 15 August 2018 It is with grave concern that we address two distinct cases of allegations of harassment, misconduct and bullying by two men, Michael Kimmel, Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and Ravi Karkara, Senior Advisor at UN Women, who are considered longstanding leaders in the field of engaging men and boys in gender equality. We acknowledge that the investigation into these cases is still in progress. However, while we await the outcomes of formal investigation processes, we believe silence and inaction is not an option. MenEngage Alliance takes a survivor-centered approach to such cases, which involves listening to and supporting survivors. We do not need to wait until someone has been formally charged or proven guilty in order to offer those who have come forward empathy and ally-ship. While the specific allegations of these cases differ significantly, we agree that these cases share key underlying factors that have become all too familiar. Namely, men in positions of power are alleged to have used and abused their influence to manipulate, coerce, bully and systematically subordinate others - which includes deeply troubling reports of sexual harassment and misconduct. The nature of these allegations is all the more concerning because the two men who are implicated have been widely regarded as leading advocates and mentors to others in our field for many years. -

He is the author or editor of more than twenty books, including: Men’s Lives , Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men , The Gendered Society , The Politics of Manhood , and Manhood in America: A Cultural History. He edits Men and Masculinities , an interdisciplinary scholarly journal, and edited the Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities and the Handbook of Studies on Men and Masculinities. PRIVILEGED ATTORNEY-CLIENT COMMUNICATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY SECOND AMENDED AND RESTATED LICENSE AGREEMENT (“SPIDER-MAN”) CREATIVE ISSUES This memo summarizes certain terms of the Second Amended and Restated License Agreement (“Spider-Man”) between SPE and Marvel, effective September 15, 2011 (the “Agreement”). 1. CHARACTERS AND OTHER CREATIVE ELEMENTS: a. Exclusive to SPE: . The “Spider-Man” character, “Peter Parker” and essentially all existing and future alternate versions, iterations, and alter egos of the “Spider- Man” character. All fictional characters, places structures, businesses, groups, or other entities or elements (collectively, “Creative Elements”) that are listed on the attached Schedule 6. All existing (as of 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that are “Primarily Associated With” Spider-Man but were “Inadvertently Omitted” from Schedule 6. The Agreement contains detailed definitions of these terms, but they basically conform to common-sense meanings. If SPE and Marvel cannot agree as to whether a character or other creative element is Primarily Associated With Spider-Man and/or were Inadvertently Omitted, the matter will be determined by expedited arbitration. All newly created (after 9/15/11) characters and other Creative Elements that first appear in a work that is titled or branded with “Spider-Man” or in which “Spider-Man” is the main protagonist (but not including any team- up work featuring both Spider-Man and another major Marvel character that isn’t part of the Spider-Man Property). The origin story, secret identities, alter egos, powers, costumes, equipment, and other elements of, or associated with, Spider-Man and the other Creative Elements covered above. The story lines of individual Marvel comic books and other works in which Spider-Man or other characters granted to SPE appear, subject to Marvel confirming ownership. -

Education on pornography increasingly is seen as a necessary strategy in the context of young people’s widespread exposure to pornography and the potential shifts in young people’s sexual and gendered lives and relations which this entails. What, then, does promising practice in education to address pornography’s influence look like? This article offers a framework for school-based pornography education. It begins with the rationale for conducting pornography education in schools in particular. Holding Out for a Hero(ine): An Examination of the Presentation and Treatment of Female Superheroes in Marvel Movies Robyn Joffe Abstract Prior to the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Captain Marvel (2019), the way that female characters from the Marvel Comics’ canon were realized onscreen was problematic for several reasons and encumbered by issues rooted in the strong female character trope and its postfeminist origins. A close examination of three Marvel superheroines—Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Mystique—reveals that while they initially appear to be positioned as equal to their male teammates, they are consistently burdened with difficulties and challenges that men never have to face. The filmmakers’ focus on these women’s appearance and sex appeal, their double standard for violent women, and their perception of a woman’s role, create a picture of “strong” women that is questionable at best and damaging at worst. Keywords: Marvel, postfeminism, sexualization, infantilization, maternalism Introduction The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a media franchise and shared universe, owned by Marvel Studios and currently consists of twenty feature films, seven television series, one digital series, assorted direct-to-video short films, tie-in comic books, and other mixed media products. It is a shared universe that is actively expanding as more and more properties are slated for release. The X-Men film series, until recently owned by 20th Century Fox, is one of the interconnecting series of films based on specific characters from Marvel Comics. It currently consists of eleven films and two television series, with more to be released this year. -

MICHAEL KIMMEL Three and a Half Things Men Have Learned from Feminist Scholarship Feminist scholarship has inspired me. Indeed, it rebooted my professional career away from an investigation of seventeenth-century French tax policies (the subject, I promise, of my PhD dissertation) and toward both helping to build a new subfield of gender studies centered on the critical investigation of men and masculinities and participating in that investigation myself through my research, mentoring, and writing. Here are several axiomatic statements about what I think we’ve learned so far: 1. Gender matters. Before the advent of feminist scholarship, gender was largely invisible: women were excluded, written out, and men were the generic, the universal. I often tell a story about how I gave a guest lecture in a course taught by a female colleague, and when I entered the class, one student looked up and said “Oh, finally, an objective opinion!” Women were biased; men were objective. By making women visible, feminist scholarship also made gender visible—and made visible the privilege men experienced that enabled us to believe we somehow embodied objectivity. 2. Gender is diverse. No sooner did feminist women make gender visible than we also had to understand that it is diverse. Not all men and not all women are similarly situated. Other master statuses—race, class, ethnicity, sexuality, age, religion, disability status—shape and construct our sense of ourselves as men and women. Men are not from Mars, women are not from Venus. Indeed, the differences among men and among women are far greater than any small mean differences one might find between women and men. -

Community Practicum Final Report: boyswillbe An (ongoing) engagement project by Tori Hoffman Introduction & Background The name of my project comes from a very well-known phrase: boys will be boys. Michael Kimmel, an American sociologist and leading researcher and writer on men and masculinity, in 2012 asked, “Why don’t we say ‘boys will be boys’ when a man wins the Nobel Peace Prize?” And he asks a fair question. The phrase “boys will be boys” is often used to excuse problematic behavior rather than to celebrate the successes of men and boys. Boys need to see examples of what healthy, respectful manhood looks like and they have told me that when they share their experiences they feel more confident addressing unhealthy behaviors of their peers and problematic relationships or habits in their own life. They want to learn from each other. My project, Boys will be, reframes that famous phrase to be more open-minded and to signal less rigid definitions of manhood for a future generation of boys.
