Yr 6 Production From the Principal Rehearsal 9 —3pm Athletics Carnival Wed 20 September After a false start last week, today was a wonderful day for our students at the faction athletics carnival. Yr 6 Production Congratulations to all students on their fabulous participation. I was extremely proud of the way Matinee & 7pm students participated across the day and the way they helped each other and worked together. PP—Yr 2 excursion to Production Matinee Thank you also to our wonderful parent community who once again supported our students with their amazing energy and enthusiasm. We would not be able to run such an inclusive and interactive carnival Thursday 21 September without this help. Yr 6 Production Well done to the school staff who worked throughout the day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. A 7pm special thanks and congratulations to Mr Stubbs for his hard work, organisation and coordination. Yr 1 excursion to Dinosaur exhibition Running the carnival off-site requires a significant amount of effort and Mr Stubbs does this without equivocation. This was made especially challenging as we had to change venues due to our postponing Friday 22 September the carnival from last week. Also a special thanks to Jeannie Coppens, an ex staff member who dedicated Last Day of Term her time on the day. One of the great attributes of our school is the way the whole school community pitches in and helps. Tuesday 10 September This carnival was a fabulous example of this, with parents and school staff collaborating through the Students Return for Term 4 planning and running of the event to give a great opportunity for our students.

Science Expo Across 3 mornings, our Science Expo took place last week involving incursions, excursions, displays and authentic science activities. Activities ranged from investigating polymers, through to designing solar vehicles, making edible aquifers and investigating various practical recycling activities.

A big thank you to our wonderful teaching and non-teaching staff for all their work around the expo and special thanks to parents involved, especially Allison Hewitt and Rebecca Boyce Cam. Thank you also to Dr Melinda Harris for her work in coordinating the three days.

It is nice to receive positive feedback and ‘Einsteins’, the science company, conducting experiments and activities as part of the expo, provided very positive feedback on our students high standard of behaviour. Pirate Day Friday As part of their leadership role at the school, our year 6 prefects will be running a special day on Friday 15 September to raise money for research into children’s cancers, specifically brain cancer. Students are invited to dress up as a pirate and bring a gold coin donation for this cause. Pirate Day Friday is a national event created to generate awareness and much needed funds for children’s brain cancer. All funds raised are allocated to research projects across Australia through The Adventurers and The Kids’ Cancer Project. Did you know: •More than 100 children aged 0-14 die from cancer in Australia each year. •1 in 4 of these deaths is a child with brain cancer. Getting into the spirit of our year 6 production and having some fun while raising awareness of this important issue is a great way for our student leaders to continue to do charitable acts for others in and around our community. For more information visit: http://www.piratedayfriday.org.au/

Production A reminder that our year 6 Production, ‘The Pirates of the Curry Bean’, will be staged at the Subiaco Arts Centre on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st September. Our Pre-Primary to year 2 students will be taken to see the matinée performance, however the older classes do not attend the matinée but are encouraged to purchase tickets, to come along in the evening with their parents. Tickets are still on sale in the office for $25 each (cash/cheque). This is always a great night and it is a wonderful opportunity to see the talents of our students on show.

ICAS Earlier this term, our school was involved in ICAS Testing. ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which provides additional information on our students. Parents of children in years 2, 4, 6 and those students who nominated to sit the test in English and Maths will receive their child's report soon.

Class teachers and administration are closely analysing the data from ICAS to target and support children’s learning. If you have any queries, once you receive your child's report, please do not hesitate to discuss with your child's teacher or Dr Melinda Harris, Deputy Principal. ICAS is regarded as a comprehensive academic assessment for primary and secondary school students.

Congratulations to the following students in year 2, 4, or 6 who achieved a High Distinction or Distinction in English. Other year levels and our Maths results, for children who nominated to participate, will be available soon.

Retro Bingo I would like to thank the P&C for their amazing fundraising efforts at Friday night’s Retro Bingo and Disco. This was a wonderful event to bring together our parents in a fun way to build the sense of community and togetherness of our school. Congratulations to all concerned in this wonderful evening.

Aussie of the Month

I am excited to announce that we are re-introducing the ‘Aussie of the Month’ award at North Cott! This is a primary school program run by the Australia Day Council of WA to recognise personal endeavour, achievement and contribution to the community. The award also reflects some of the values we share as Australians: a sense of fair play, generosity of spirit, commitment to community participation and a real concern for the environment.

We will be using this award to complement and reinforce our school’s values. An Aussie of the Month will be awarded six times a year - once for each year level, and linked to the current focus school value.

At the start of the month, I will visit the relevant classes to explain what the award is about, and to discuss with students what the focus value “sounds like, feels like, looks like”. Students will be encouraged to demonstrate this value, as well as the general Aussie of the Month values, within the school community during that month. At the end of the month, staff will discuss and decide on a worthy recipient for that year level. The award will be presented at an assembly, with the student receiving a badge, certificate, and stationery pack provided by the Australia Day Council.

We are currently focusing on the value of Responsibility. The first Aussie of the Month will be awarded to a Year 6 student at the school assembly on 20th October. Stay tuned!

As a school we are constantly focusing on values with all students. This is another ‘string in our bow’ to help us implement a focused approach to values education at North Cottesloe. I hope this award will help us all to recognise good citizenship and encourage students to be proud of themselves and their school.
