Representatives of CCNJ and non-member clubs al- so attend. You, as a member club dancer, are welcome to join these meet- ings to express your views, ask questions, make suggestions or just to observe the proceedings; however, only the Designated Delegates have the authority to vote. At our meeting this past September a query was distributed by LEGACY.. ..."To help keep square dancing the way you like it". Each Club President received a reprint of CALLERLAB's revision of Basics, Extended Basics, Mainstream and the probability of combining M/S-1 and M/S-2 into an over- all M/S level. We asked that this be discussed with executive boards and to return the resulting comments and suggestions. In the Fall issue of C/ S there was a Mini-Festival questionaire so that this NNJSDA sponsored e- vent would be as you like it in '82. The number of responses to these three items while not overwhelming, was encouraging your interest and concern was very strongly expressed. Thank you for finding time to respond. We appreciate your letters...keep them coming...we received many ideas for recruitment of new dancers; many questions and suggestions regarding GRAND SQUARE; we have been asked for advice on how to handle Callers who don't stay within the dance level ad- vertised by the club; how to retain our dancers, especially our new dancers. Many of the questions were answered at the Delegates Meetings, some of our dance clubs already have formulated programs in answer to some questions or problems that were raised. Your Delegates are dedicated and have indicated a very thorough under- standing of where we are and what direction is best to be followed by the Square Dance activity. Show your Delegates you appreciate the time and effort they give so ....give them the opportunity to share with club members the whys and wherefores of their meetings. The more informed you are of actions and reactions in our square dance area....the more you will enjoy square dancing share your thinking about the S/D activity with us, with your Delegates, and with your club officers COMMUNICATE Let us Communicate Fun and Friendship at the CLINT LcLEAN SPECIAL on JANUARY 30, 1982

COVERED BRIDGE SQUARES -- Nuttey, N.J. 1 2 g 4 Faidays Taankan Reptmed Chuach, fikttskde Crescent If nothing else, we've been having fun at all our dances, For instance at our Halloween Dance there were 9 men dressed as women & 4 women dressed as men. Four husky six-footers in drag danced to the tune of "Let Me En- tertain You." They were a howling success. Janice Ahearn's sheep costume was judged the most original. At another dance, besides cake, juice 8 other goodies, we were treated to frankfuters with all the trimminas. In October we filled a chartered bus which took us to a train in Conn. & then a boat trip on the Conn. River. The day was capped by an excellent smor- gasbord prepared especially for us in a restaurant. Our Raid Chairman, Lee/George Leonard's, have led us on 2 raids & have scheduled 2 more lh the future. By the time you read this, we will have had our Xmas Dance to which our students have been invited. After Xmas comes *he New Year, so at this time we wish all dancers "A Year of Happy Square Dancing," (See oua ad on page 22.) CtaAa/NoAxa EmbeA 201-759-NW 7 CROSS TRAIL SQUARES Cadged -Z, N.J. This winter we'll have Will Larsen, Paul Brody, Mike Cleary and Dick Pas- yolsky calling as well as friendly people to dance with and tasty treats to tempt you. With an assist from caller Mike Foley, we gave "1982" a warm welcome at our annual New Year's Eve party. More than 50 couples participated in the dancing and fun and games. Why don't you plan now to join us next year. The club is looking forward to a number of "demos" this winter. Especially our second annual visit to the Methodist Manor in Branchville, a senior citizens home. Our visit last year was truly appre- ciated and we, in turn, enjoyed being there. Following the demo we plan to go, as a group, to the beautiful Walipack Inn for dinner. 33rd National S/D Convention News. . . . It will be BALTIMORE IN '84 (June 28,29 & 30) for the thousands of dancers coming from all over the US, Canada & Foreign countries for the 33rd National S/D Convention. The host federation is the Mason-Dixon S/D Federation. General Chairmen are Peter "J" & Jen- nie Zukauskas (pronounced Zoo-Cows-Cue, as Jennie ex- plains. Peter "J" & Jennie are now newcomers to this type of committee work. In 1977 they were an el- normous help to the 26th National in Atlantic City (they did the Clam Bake) & thruout the years have worked on numerous projects in their local federation. ! Vic/Peg Wills, Chr. of the 16th National in Philly & Steve/Dorothy Musial, Chr. of the 26th in Atlantic City are their advisors from the National Executive Committee. Because the theme elint took place during the war of 1812, the conven- tion will have colonial overtones. Generally the theme will incorporate the flag & Fort McHenry, the birthplace of our National Anthem. A specially designed costume is used to promote the convention within the federation and neighboring federations/associations as well. See the above pix of the Zukauskas with Doc Tirrell taken at a NSDC. The costume functions much like a logo or trademark which is used to identify a pro- duct, service or evert. The costume is optional, however it is worn by those who wish to show their support. The costume colors, dark blue on light blue ,Tare flattering to at least 90% of the people wearing it. Pat- terns are available from Mary Strickland 4227 Thorncliff Rd.,Baltimore,MD 21236 sizes 8 thru 20 for $1.50 or $2. by mail. Packets of material are available from Jennie Zukauskas 314 East Broadway, Bel Air, MD 21014 for $22 (which include the lace cap worn on ladies head & man's tie). Spare caplets at $1 & ties at $1.25 are also available. For non sewers, Hannelore's (ad on p. 41) has some dresses already made up. It is not necessary to have a convention dress, but it does show your support. Al- ready quite a few NNJSDA area dancers/callers have been seen wearing the official outfits. The Tirrells will be serving as NNJSDA liaison to keep you up on the de tails of our neighboring federation's convention. Also helping them to spread the word thruout our area will be our Executive Board members. Our BALTIMORE in '84 BOOSTER BALL is planned for Saturday, July 24, 1982. More on this, & other convention info, in the next issue. If you have any questions please feel free to contact your NNJSDA officers or Tirrells. 31th NSDC - June 24,25,26, 1982 - Detroit, Michigan 32nd NSDC - June 23,24,25, 1983 - Louisville,Kentucky

From all reports our bill to have the Square Dance designated the American Folk Dance of the state of NJ will die uncalled for by Governor B. Byrne...in spite of a tremendous amount of mail, calls, meetings, etc by S/Ders. Battle scarred, but undaunted, FRANK/HELEN CAVANAUGH will start the process all over again early in '82...only this time the NJ Gov. elect told one of his work- ers, he would call for & sign the bill if it does pass both houses. IN THE MEANTIME, we S/Ders have work to do. RJR 151, the bill designating the S/D as the National Folk Dance of our USA, has passed the Senate. But it w111 remain in the House Committee un- less we can get 218 Congressmen & women to co-sponsor it. Frank & Helen have personally visited a number of NJ Congressmen & women and to their amazement have discovered most of them knew nothing about RJR 151...nor had most received any mail aboet it ether!, So PLEASE- get on the ball. Contact your district Congressman and get them to agree to co-sponsor the bill. And thenget your relatives and friends in other states to do the same. ACTION NOW is needed. So far we have 10 sponsors in NJ from dis- tricts 1,4,5,67711,13,14,15 and In NY only in districts 32,34,37!!! Per- haps by the time you read this it will be more; your Delegate will have the latest report from the Cavanaughs from the Delegates Meeting. But re- gardless, contact your Congressman (or woman) & let them know YOU are in- terested. The name of the game is "Get a CO-SPONSOR!" RAMAPO SQUARES Oakt4E4LL ADV ) 2 5 4 Saturday Hetig oe, Seminole Avenue Going strong in its 31st year, Ramapo is thriving on all fronts. Our latest innovation - computerized squares - has been enthusiastically re- ceived. We've had a surprising number of guests from as far away as a two-hour drive. Our regular dances, the annual dinner-dance in October, our gala New Year's Eve party - were all very well attended and most en- joyable. And there's good news ahead: Turn to page 33 for dates and names of upcoming callers. On a social note, Ginny/Bud Allison, finally treated themselves to the vacation they've dreamed about. They departed for Hawaii on Halloween and returned fourteen days later. It was a vaca- tion, Ginny said, that not only lived up to but surpassed their great ex- pectations. Our "good and welfare" news concerns Lee Venable. Lee's home from the hospital after a short second stay, having passed all his tests with flying colors. Not that we haven't aid this before, but it bears repeating: For great square dancing on an advanced level, for de= lightful rounds by Doc/Peg Tirrell, for members who are friendly and wel- coming, you can't do better than to make Ramapo your club of fire -t- choice! In January we are having a student dance. So invite all the studeets you know and let them parade their wealth of dancing. A fashion snow will else be given that evening so everybody can spruce up their wardrobe. Our congratulations to Dana/ Frank Calderoni on the marriage of their son and She Schneider on the Bar Mitzvah of their son. To our most esteemed, Frank Zaruba & Dave Weiss, get well quickly. SWINGINISTARS—Maill000d,N.l. ( +1+) 2nd Satutday Avenue Schoo' Here we are at the beginning of a brand-new year and still our favorite astime continues to remain a "today" activity. Square dancing has always ad this innate quality of being able to adjust to its period. Not that he changes were drastic - just a small one here and there which would be eadily accepted by the dancers as its time had arrived. And for us of he 1982 variety, it is a big "plus". Have you ever tried to oo to a pare dance and bring your problems with your No way. You either dance r you worry about your problems - but you can't do both. Square (a round) dancing has been likened to a fraternity. Most all us have, at some time or other, expeaenced the caring, the thoughtfulnee the kindness of our fellow dancer - here or in ourravels. But as always, the real magic is experiencing the transformation from a chilly church hail to a warm and joyous party by the chemistry between ae enthusiastic caller and responsive dancers. At a general club meeting in November, it was decided that our Wednesday evening dances would be opened to students. This will provide students with an opportunity to practice what they've learned in classes & ease their transition into club !atei dancing. It also gives more experienced dancers the opportunity to hop k inspire some very nice people eager to become polished "pros". !:at- edent tips will be interspersed with plus one tips. This year our officers first had to cope with finding a location for the "middle" third of the series of classes because the school was not available then. The members of Y Squares certainly have, with gre,:t turnouts at all dances. We've got some great ones coming up too, a pic night and a Valentines dance to name two. Reminder- no dance Good Fri- day A goodly number of gifts were donated at our November dance for dieribution to the patients at Runnels Hospital at Christmas, we're prcad to see that many clubs collect gifts & toys for various hospitals, orphanages, etc. It's one of the side benefits of sliding - the pleasure of giving to others without looking for thanks or for a gift in return. Maybe we ought to consider gifts at other times of the year, that the home or hospital could give at a patients birthday. That might give additional pleasure as well as "spread the wealth" that is now contributed in a huge bun,7• at one hol i day. Food for thought. However, as we start a new year, let's all pitch in to keep the movement expanding. Happy dancing in 1982. 16 This issue the SQUARE PINCUSHION makes a 5-tier skirt

In response to several requests, we'll review how to make the most feminine of skirts-the 5-tiers

Each tier is a graduated length with the narrowest at the top, and the widest at the bottom. The mathematics will sound a bit complicated, but take it step by step, and you'll do fine. The easiest & the place to begin is to use the finished length of 25*. Finishing each tier at 3°,4°,5°,6", & 7" to make a total of 25". Adjust by fractions either to shorten or lengthen. Then add 1" to the width of the 4 uppermost tiers for 2 *" seam allowan- ces, and finally add 4" for top edge seam allowance on the bottom tier plus desired hem.

For the cuttings(up to about a 35" waist) Cut 2 strips 45" fabric for tier 1; out 2 for tier 2; cut 3 for tier 3; out 5 for tier 4 & cut 7 for tier 5; also out 1 4 5" for the waistband.

For the assembly: For each tier, join the strips in that size, end to end, Leave last seam open- this will give you 5 long strips . For tier 1, measure off and cut at 60"; tier 2 uses the full 90";tier 3 cuts at 135"; tier 4 cuts at 205" and tier 5 is 310". This will allow each tier to be 1-i tines fuller than the preceding one. Now gather the upper edge of tier 2 and sew to lower edge of tier 1; gather upper edge of tier 3 and sew to bottom edge of tier 2; repeat with tiers 4 and 5. Your combined tiers should lock like the picture at the right. Sew remaining seam, leave allowance for zipper. insert (, I 1 LI-I-- zipper. Cut waistband strip the length •f -your-iweist plus an allowance for seams and overlap. Sew end seams, add some stiffening. Gather upper edge of skirt to fit ycur waist and attach to waistband. Add closure desilfs.A. Try on and if length is correct do your hem. Since this is about8i. yards at the bottom,a machine hem is not out of place. If your skirt looks too short because your math was off or your seams to deep try adding a band of eyelet or contrasting -abric strip or some other edgiftg. You could split your _)west tier and Insert a trim of your choice.

A tip or two- use lightweight fabric- many tiers were intended for a dainty look....Learn to use a ruffler, it saves many a temper and is a worthwhile investment. can be attached to a bodice in place of waistband.. trim it up with rickraek, ribbon, eyelet, applique, or whatever enjoy it over and over again • •

About 4 squares have signed up & the class is sponsored by Hi Taw Twirlers. Did you ever watch teenagers "learn"? When the adult class invited them to their Christmas Party after the third lesson, you couldn't have seen more excited faces any place. AL LA 9C=1 QUARTERLY SELECTION COMMITTEE tepoA14.... The International Association For the quarter beginning Jan. 1, CALLERLAB Callers of Square Dance has selected two movements for use during workshops at the MS level...HINGE & FLUTTER by Ron Schneider. .."Starting formation - Ocean Wave(s). All dancers do a Single Hinge, the in-facers will do a Reverse Flutterwheel while the out-facers do a right about face to finish as in a Reverse Flutterwheel. Ends in facing pairs." Callers are asked to be sure that all dancers are in established wave(s) before calling HINGE & FLUTTER since the move begins with a Single Hinge action. There are some All Position Dancing (APD) calls that dance smoothly if your groups are so inclined. Please note, however, that not all groups desire to dance other than from common (normal) boy-girl arrangements. It is not CALLERLAB's intent to force APD onto any group. RELEASE THE COLUMN - "Starts from any right or left-handed column for- mation. The number 2 and 4 dancers in each column move forward and slight ly left or right to pair up with the dancer in front of them (making a momentary offset two-faced line) and then all finish like a Ferris Wheel to end in a Double Pass Thru formation. (From a common or normal column, RELEASE THE COLUMN produces a common or zero Double Pass Thru formation.) CALLERLAB members will be voting on all existing QS by mail ballot & will conduct a discussion & vote at their annual convention in April. The above moves will be on the QS list for the period beginning Jan. 1 until removed or accepted after a three year trial period. Please let us hear from you on the dancer reaction to these moves & routines Send all comments to CALLERLAB Box 679, Pocono Pines, PA 18350. Thank you. CALLERLAB is pleased to announce the results of the 1981 election to the Board of Governors. Elected to serve were Jon Jones, (TX), Stan Bur- dick (OH), Norman Cross (ND), Kip Garvey (CA), & Ernie Kinney (CA). Other candidates in this election also deserve a great deal of credit & congrat- ulations include Bill Addison (MD), Gregg Anderson (CO), Don Beck (MA) Bruce Bird (KS), Betsy Gotta (NJ), Ken Kernen (AZ), Martin Mallard (CAN), & Roger Morris (CA). Our congratulations to the successful candidates as well as those who were not yet elected. CALLERLAB wishes all a healthy & Happy Holiday Season & prosperous New Year. Since we became a members club, during this past summer, our member- ship has steadily increased, As of this writing (November 1981) we have over seventy dues paying members - a gain of over fifty percent since La- bor Day. This indicates a very strong desire on their part to make this club a reputable segment of the square dancing scene. Our beginners? class instructor, Al Moses, & his lovely wife Edie, have just returned from a trip to Israel & Egypt. Sorry. folks, they got there too late to stop that assassination. We are introducing some APD ideas as well as workshopping. Starting the end of January, we plan to offer class level dances on 2nd & 4th Fridays. This will provide some extra practice for the new students as well as giving them an opportunity to meet other new dancers. We wish to thank all those who are supporting us & wish everyone a healthy & happy New Year. {bee ad on page 26 9110 Bob/Kay Taxtant 201-766-5628 .0.9,VEL #57,1".0 C4 4/44704Fel. ] 7715"
