St. May 31-June 1 at IRA Championships (men) (Camden County, N.J./Cooper River) Huskies in Action Washington rowers will travel to the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend for the two-day Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic, hosted by Stanford University. Most of the Husky Fast Facts crews will compete in two races on Saturday, with a third race on Sunday along the 2,000-meter Redwood Shores course in Belmont, Calif. Representing Washington are the men’s and women’s Institution: University of Washington varsity and junior varsity eights, the men’s and women’s varsity fours, as well as the men’s Enrollment: 42,000 (31,474 undergraduates) freshman eight and a women’s novice eight. Competition begins at 9 a.m. each day. Colors: Purple & Gold Nickname: Huskies Windermere Classic Preview Home Course: Montlake Cut; Seattle, Wash. The Huskies’ 2006 season opener features a unique racing format. Rather than rowing the course alongside several other boats as is customary, each crew will compete head-to-head with just Head Men’s Coach: Bob Ernst one other boat in a match race. The Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic is hosted for the fifth Alma Mater: UC Irvine ‘67, Washington ‘79 year by the same real estate company that has been a 21-year sponsor of the Windermere Cup, Years at Washington/Overall: 20/33 Washington’s annual Opening Day regatta that will take place May 5 in Seattle. Head Women’s Coach: Eleanor McElvaine The Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic will feature collegiate crews from twenty-two Alma Mater: Washington ‘85 colleges across the nation in Henley-style rowing events. Henley-style is a one-on-one or a two- Years at Washington/Overall: 4/17 boat race. Also referred to as a match race, this format for competition is used at the Henley Royal Men’s Freshman Coach: Michael Callahahn Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England. More than 100 individual races will take place between 9 Women’s Novice Coach: Erica Schwab a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 on Sunday. In addition to the collegiate events Women’s Assistant Coach: Robbie Tenenbaum on the slate, local high school and junior rowing clubs will also compete. All race events are free and open to the public, who are welcome to view racing from the shoreline and surrounding areas.
