Audi ultra lightweight technology.

Intelligent lightweight design has a major role to play in all Audi Audi ultra lightweight technology in Audi S6, Audi S7 Sportback: Audi ultra lightweight technology in the Audi S8: cars. This is particularly true of the sporty S models. The Audi core •• Aluminium hybrid construction •• Audi Space Frame (ASF) expertise of lightweight design heralds considerable benefits for •• Approx. 20 % aluminium content helps achieve weight saving of •• High-strength aluminium frame structure with force-locking the driver. After all, the less weight the engine has to propel, the approx. 15 % compared with conventional steel construction connection of aluminium panels more agile the vehicle’s handling becomes and the lower its fuel •• Body with weight saving of over 30 kg compared to predecessor •• Far lower weight compared to conventional steel construction consumption. Different aspects of Audi ultra lightweight technology (Audi S6) •• Best-in-class performance for safety thanks, for instance, to can be found in the Audi S8 on the one hand and the Audi S6 and •• High agility: centre of gravity moves closer to middle of vehicle 25 % increase in torsional rigidity (compared to predecessor) Audi S7 Sportback on the other. because all add-on parts are made from aluminium •• Use of high-strength materials means quality is superior to •• Aluminium components used for chassis parts, reducing the conventional steel construction unsprung weight and therefore increasing comfort and agility Ceramic brakes.

The braking systems fitted as standard on the Audi S models are •• Long life: service life up to four times longer than steel brake •• When driving in the wet or on gritted roads, the braking effect already able to deliver exactly what is expected of the vehicles in discs with the same specifications of ceramic brakes can become similar to that of conventional all sorts of different situations. The optional ceramic brakes provide •• High fading resistance: repeated braking, when driving down brakes. If the driver has already become accustomed to the high even greater stopping power in certain situations, combined with a long mountain pass for example, does not lead to natural braking power of the ceramic brakes, this may be perceived as a lower weight and longer life. The brake discs are made from carbon deterioration in braking power a loss of braking power – it can be compensated for by pressing fibre-reinforced ceramic, making them more abrasion-resistant •• Unlike steel brake discs, ceramic brake discs are insusceptible the brake pedal harder. than steel brakes. The special properties of ceramic brakes: to corrosion •• Carbon fibre-reinforced ceramic consists of abrasion-resistant •• Special cooling ducts keep the brakes supplied with sufficient silicon carbide with carbon fibres embedded in it air and dissipate any frictional heat given off •• Disc size 400 x 38 mm, ceramic friction ring with stainless-steel bowl, brake pad surface area 150 cm2 •• Unmistakable appearance thanks to anthracite brake callipers and Audi ceramic logo at front •• Weight reduction of over 3.5 kg per brake disc compared to standard braking system •• Increased ride comfort due to reduction in unsprung masses •• Superior agility and efficiency as a result of lower vehicle weight •• Impressive braking performance in certain driving situations compared to steel brakes thanks to very high and constant friction coefficients

27 Dynamic steering.

The dynamic steering provides precise steering feel in all driving •• Direct ratio and high power assistance at low speeds, e.g. when •• Active, stabilising steering inputs help the driver in critical situations. Variable control of the steering torque and ratio allow driving in the city or on winding roads, facilitate an agile style situations, such as oversteering or braking on split-friction the steering feel to be adapted exactly to the current road speed of driving surfaces (e.g. snow on left, tarmac on right) and the chosen Audi drive select mode.
