PLACING THE CARDSTON TEMPLE IN EARLY MORMON TEMPLE ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY By Amanda Buessecker A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in Art History Carleton University May 2020 Supervisor: Peter Coffman, Ph.D. Carleton University ii Abstract: The Cardston temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints represents a drastic shift in temple architecture of the early Mormon faith. The modern granite structure was designed not to show a mere difference of aesthetic taste, but as an embodiment of the evolving relationship between the Mormon pioneers and the American government. Earlier temples, erected in the nineteenth century throughout the valleys of Utah, were constructed by Mormon pioneers at a time when the religious group desired to separate themselves from the United States physically, politically, and architecturally. When the temple was built in Cardston, Alberta (1913-1923), it was a radical departure from its medievalist predecessors in Utah. 'NOT TO BE RITEN': THE MORMON TEMPLE RITE AS ORAL CANON Kathleen Flake Abstract The manner in which the LDS Church administers its temple rite constitutes a strategic use of the conventions of an oral tradition in a modern, literate society. Three effects of this strategy are con- sidered. First, refusing to make a text of the rite available and in- sisting that its specific content not be revealed or otherwise sub- jected to discursive thought sustains the rite's canonical authority as immutable truth, notwithstanding its periodic mutation. Secondly, the conventions of oral tradition structure the relation- ships created by the ritual and constitute a principal means by which the Church's historic separatism is maintained. Finally, these conventions when applied to the temple rite maximize ritu- al's capacity to adapt the canon to the needs of successive genera- tions of the faithful while minimizing skepticism and schism. By letter of June, 1842, one of Joseph Smith's closest associates in the for- mative days of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("LDS Church" or "the LDS") writes to another of the newly-received temple ceremony: I wish you was here so as to feel and hear for your Self, we have recieved some pressious things through the Prophet...that would cause your soul to rejoice I can not give them to you on paper fore they are not to be riten. (Heber C. Kimball to Parley P. Pratt, Gregory Prince [n.d.:39]). In the ensuing one hundred and fifty years, the LDS Church has not wavered from its earliest insistence that its temple rite is "not to be riten," but only to be experienced by the faithful who "feel and hear for" them- selves by participating in the ritual. -

ABSTRACT This paper probes the history of the Temple Mount complex during the British Mandate for Palestine. Approaching this sacred space from three different perspectives—British, Arab, and Jewish—this paper examines how people and events surrounding it contributed to the evolution of Palestine after World War I. Ultimately, I argue that Britain’s non-policy on the Temple Mount undermined the Mandate project and ultimately contributed to the rise of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Fearful of angering Muslims in Palestine and around the world, the British handed control of the space to an indigenous Arab-Muslim administration. This policy of “affirmative deference” allowed certain Muslim leaders to carve out a sphere of de facto sovereignty inside the site and establish a base for resistance to the British government. For many Jewish settlers in Palestine, sanctioned and unchecked Arab power inside Judaism’s holiest site led them to abandon faith in the Mandate and formulate their own plans for independence. -

The Development of the Mormon Temple Endowment Ceremony David John Buerger Your endowment is, to receive all those ordinances in the House of the Lord, which are necessary for you, after you have departed this life, to enable you to walk to the presence of the Father, passing the angels who stand as sentinels, being en- abled to give them the key words, the signs and tokens, pertaining to the Holy Priesthood, and gain your eternal exaltation in spite of earth and hell.—Brigham Young (JD 2:31) FOR FAITHFUL LATTER-DAY SAINTS, the temple endowment ceremony is one of the most sacred and powerful ordinances received in mortality. One authoritative source called it the temporal stepping stone which all peo- ple must pass to achieve exaltation with God the Father and Jesus Christ.1 Since those who enter the temple agree, as part of the endowment ex- perience, not to reveal certain key words or symbols that are part of the ceremony and since any discussion of the endowment takes place upon sacred ground, this essay will not discuss the theological significance, spiritual meanings, or symbolic dimensions of the endowment, impor- tant though they are in the lives of Latter-day Saints. Gaskill Since 1831, Independence, Missouri, has held a position of significance in the theology of the Restoration. To this day, many Restoration Latter Day Saint churches continue to see it as sacred, either for Joseph Smith’s declara- tion that it was once the Garden of Eden, or because he decreed it to be the site where a holy temple would be erected, or because it was designated as a place of gathering for the Saints (or all of the above). Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, members of the Community of Christ (formerly RLDS), the Church of Christ (Temple Lot) (i.e., Hedrickites), the Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerites), and several other Restoration groups have a presence in Independence venerating it as a place of significance for believers in the restoration of the gospel as revealed through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The idea of venerating sacred ground, or a sacred place, is not unique to those of the Restoration traditions. Throughout history, kings, priests, and peasants have sought interaction with the divine. When the transcendental occurred, they would often erect an altar or monument to commemorate the occasion, and also as a testament to their sense of the hallowed nature of the location in which the divine revealed Himself. -

When wandering through the archaeological remains and perusing written records of those often spectacular sacred buildings, modern secular people are disadvantaged in trying to comprehend the devotion and awe that ancient people must have felt toward their temples, whether in Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean, or Mesoamerica. Ancient civilizations ded icated their scarcest public resources to the extensive tasks of building, furnishing, and operating the beautiful temples that dominated the central precincts of so many of their lands and cities. Those buildings were not only viewed as "the one point on earth at which men and women could establish contact with higher spheres," 1 but they also "rep resented stability and cohesiveness in the community, and their rites and ceremonies were viewed as essential to the proper functioning of the society." 2 Public veneration at every holy place was freely offered by the faithful, who gathered often at the temple for religious instruction, coronations, sacrifices, and other sacred rites and crucial 297 298 JOHN W. WELCH functions. Meanwhile, death threats were posted to protect the sanctity of ancient temples against improper intruders. 3 Evidence in the Book of Mormon indicates that temples were equally important among the Nephites, both in their religion and in their society. Prominent on the landscape of each of the three successive Nephite capital cities of Nephi, Zarahemla, and Bountiful was a temple, probably one of the most important structures in town. -

A HOLY DAY, A HOLY PLACE, A HOLY LIFE P. Scott Ferguson—Department of Religion ospel truths are often best understood when paired together. Concepts Gsuch as faith and repentance, justice and mercy, the lower law and the higher law, immortality and eternal life are all better understood when studied as pairs. We gain a deeper understanding and testimony of a given truth as we begin to see how it interacts with other truths. For example, as I come to understand the intricate relationship between faith and repentance, I can more directly approach the throne of God to seek His forgiveness. As I exert faith in Christ’s atonement, my desire to be free of sin leads to repentance and a remission of sins. While gospel truths aggregate until they all come together into a single great whole, we cannot now comprehend the wholeness. Explaining our present limitation and eventual possibility, Orson Pratt taught: “He will…expand [your mind] wider and wider, until you can circumscribe the earth and the heavens, reach forth into eternity, and contemplate the mighty acts of Jehovah in all their variety and glory.”1 While learning line upon line, we may stretch ourselves by discovering the many relationships that one precept shares with another, until the day comes when we can understand the whole.2 Many truths at first glance may seem unrelated, but deeper study Many truths at reveals they are inseparable.
