  • Self-Injury & Suicide: Reducing the Risk
SELF-INJURY & SUICIDE: REDUCING THE RISK GUEST: SALLY FOOTE, DVM [00:00:00] Colleen Pelar: Hi, welcome back to UNLEASHED (at work & home). My guest today is Dr. Sally Foote of Okaw Vet Clinic in Illinois, and I asked her to talk to me today a little bit about self-injuring behavior because that's a big problem and it's something that we do sometimes when we are attempting to cope with problems and it's not usually helpful. So welcome, Dr. Foote. I'm so glad you're here today. Sally Foote, DVM: Thank you. If you hear a few background noises, that's because of my veterinary practice. I holed myself off in the exam room, but you may hear voices in the hall and just to let you know. Colleen Pelar: It's all about real life here. Things happen. We typically start with animals and then we move toward people. So we do see self-injuring behavior in animals sometimes. Can you tell me a little bit about that? When does that occur? Sally Foote, DVM: Well, I think um the most common thing many veterinarians, veterinary staff, even probably, you know pet owners that have had [00:01:00] some uh, whatever little more educated or experience with pets, we can think of, say, the dog who chronically licks their front paw chronically, maybe if their paws or at a spot on the back of their foot, and this is called an acral lick granuloma. That's the technical medical term and oftentimes what gets them to start licking is some kind of like stress, some kind of anxiety trigger, and it becomes chronic and it actually is partly a compulsive behavior.

Coronado National Memorial Historical Research Project Research Topics Written by Joseph P. Sánchez, Ph.D. John Howard White, Ph.D. Edited by Angélica Sánchez-Clark, Ph.D. With the assistance of Hector Contreras, David Gómez and Feliza Monta University of New Mexico Graduate Students Spanish Colonial Research Center A Partnership between the University of New Mexico and the National Park Service [Version Date: May 20, 2014] 1 Coronado National Memorial Coronado Expedition Research Topics 1) Research the lasting effects of the expedition in regard to exchanges of cultures, Native American and Spanish. Was the shaping of the American Southwest a direct result of the Coronado Expedition's meetings with natives? The answer to this question is embedded throughout the other topics. However, by 1575, the Spanish Crown declared that the conquest was over and the new policy of pacification would be in force. Still, the next phase that would shape the American Southwest involved settlement, missionization, and expansion for valuable resources such as iron, tin, copper, tar, salt, lumber, etc. Francisco Vázquez de Coronado’s expedition did set the Native American wariness toward the Spanish occupation of areas close to them. Rebellions were the corrective to their displeasure over colonial injustices and institutions as well as the mission system that threatened their beliefs and spiritualism. In the end, a kind of syncretism and symbiosis resulted. Today, given that the Spanish colonial system recognized that the Pueblos and mission Indians had a legal status, land grants issued during that period protects their lands against the new settlement pattern that followed: that of the Anglo-American.

Season 2, Episode 1 Jesus, Incarnation, and The Christ Resurrection Paul Swanson: Welcome to season two of Another Name for Every Thing. Casual conversations with Richard Rohr responding to listener questions from his new book, The Universal Christ, and from season one of this podcast. Brie Stoner: This podcast was recorded in a tiny hermitage on the grounds of the Center for Action and Contemplation, a nonprofit founded by Richard Rohr located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Because of that, you may hear neighborhood sounds such as sirens, dogs, and the occasional peacock scream. That’s a real thing. Look it up. We are your hosts. I’m Brie Stoner. Paul Swanson: And I’m Paul Swanson. Brie Stoner: We’re staff members of the Center for Action and Contemplation and students of this contemplative path, trying our best to live the wisdom of this tradition amidst broken heaters, calls from school nurses, and the shifting state of our world. Paul Swanson: This is the first of twelve weekly episodes. Today, we’re tackling your questions on the theme, Jesus, Incarnation and The Christ Resurrection. Brie Stoner: Well, Richard, we spent the first season of Another Name for Every Thing exploring the themes in each chapter of your new book, The Universal Christ. It was so rich and so deep that we realized this conversation is just far from over. There are way too many things we still want to talk about, and circle around, and spend more time with. So, we asked our listeners to turn in their most pressing and burning questions, and Paul and I were just overwhelmed with the vulnerability and the care, and the concern, and the curiosity to want to talk about these themes more.

  • John Ashbery (1927- ) Soonest Mended Barely Tolerated, Living On
John Ashbery (1927- ) Soonest Mended Barely tolerated, living on the margin In our technological society, we were always having to be rescued On the brink of destruction, like heroines in Orlando Furioso Before it was time to start all over again. There would be thunder in the bushes, a rustling of coils, And Angelica, in the Ingres painting, was considering The colorful but small monster near her toe, as though wondering whether forgetting The whole thing might not, in the end, be the only solution. And then there always came a time when Happy Hooligan in his rusted green automobile Came plowing down the course, just to make sure everything was O.K., Only by that time we were in another chapter and confused About how to receive this latest piece of information. Was it information? Weren’t we rather acting this out For someone else’s benefit, thoughts in a mind With room enough and to spare for our little problems (so they began to seem), Our daily quandary about food and the rent and bills to be paid? To reduce all this to a small variant, To step free at last, minuscule on the gigantic plateau— This was our ambition: to be small and clear and free. Alas, the summer’s energy wanes quickly, A moment and it is gone. And no longer May we make the necessary arrangements, simple as they are. Our star was brighter perhaps when it had water in it. Now there is no question even of that, but only Of holding on to the hard earth so as not to get thrown off, With an occasional dream, a vision: a robin flies across The upper corner of the window, you brush your hair away And cannot quite see, or a wound will flash Against the sweet faces of the others, something like: This is what you wanted to hear, so why Did you think of listening to something else? We are all talkers It is true, but underneath the talk lies The moving and not wanting to be moved, the loose Meaning, untidy and simple like a threshing floor.
