Not only do you star in “Shades of Blue,” you’re also part of the team of executive producers on it. How is that helping you in making sure the show is done the way you want? They’re making sure that every line comes to life, and that every line is the right line. We’d be in my trailer, and we’d see that an episode had a real opportunity to be something super-profound about humanity. We’d be sitting there trying to find the one line, and not giving up until it was exactly what we thought it could be. Looking at all the promos now, it just shows you how every moment is important, and so is how everything looks. Producing is exciting for me in that way, because being an actor for so many years, I was just doing my part – literally – and having to stay in my lane. To be able to be part of the whole picture and take an idea from inception to the final edit is so exciting, and I’m really proud of it. I really feel this is about how people are good, but we get messy. The goodness in us is always trying to supersede the bad judgments we make sometimes. You’re also an executive producer of “The Fosters,” which resumes on the newly renamed Freeform on Jan. 25. What is that series accomplishing for you in terms of the kind of programming you want to make? Talking about “Shades of Blue” as well, television can help in so many ways, and I really believe “The Fosters” does that. It pushes the envelope and educates people about what’s going on. It’s such a beautiful show. • 'Nothing but the Truth': Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US
‘Nothing but the Truth’: Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US Television Crime Drama 2005-2010 Hannah Ellison Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies Submitted January 2014 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. 2 | Page Hannah Ellison Abstract Over the five year period 2005-2010 the crime drama became one of the most produced genres on American prime-time television and also one of the most routinely ignored academically. This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions.

Most successfully, ABC Family uses Twitter to promote the teen drama Pretty Little Liars through the use of hashtags and celebrity interactions. This study analyzes Pretty Little Liars’ use of hashtags created by the network and by actors from the show. It examines how the Pretty Little Liars’ official accounts engage fans about their opinions on the show and encourage further discussion. Fans use the network- generated hashtags within their tweets to react to particular scenes and to hopefully be noticed by managers of official show accounts.
