During these ten years many people helped me to overcome the several steps until the end of my Ph.D., and I’m truly thankful for all of them. Firstly, I would like to thank the University of Michigan, the Rackham Graduate School and, more specifically, the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and the Museum of Zoology (UMMZ) for opening their doors and giving me all the necessary support for an international student pursue its research in this institution. Thank you for always believing in my studies and financially supporting them with Block Grants, Rackham Graduate Student Research Grants, Rackham International Student Award, and Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship Program and the Tinkle Award that I was awarded during my Ph.D. Also, although I was not officially a member of the Fish Division at the UMMZ, I’m grateful for all the opportunities this division offered me, including the Ichthyology Student Award for developing my fieldwork in Brazil, the curator assistantship position that allowed me to gain expertise by working in the fish collection and for the Hubbs, Carl L. and Laura C. Fellowship that allowed me to work full time on my research for two years. All the handling of specimens, including paper work, shipping and housing at the fish collection, wouldn’t be able to be done without Doug Nelson’s help, support and ichthyological stories. Also, Robbin Murrell and Cindy Carl were essential for all the logistic support and answering all my questions (and I had many!). I would like to thank the National Science Foundation (NSF) for awarding my advisor and I with the Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (DDIG). This support was essential for developing all the sequencing and methodologies necessary for the accomplishment of this dissertation. During my master’s I had the chance to attend a seminar presented by a professor with orange nail polish on her toes (not sure why I still remember this detail) that was developing the most innovative research in phylogeography, in my opinion. Years after, she accepted me as a iii student in her lab and this was the most intense learning experience I have had in my life. In reality, it was not just about methodologies, but what I will really take for my life that I have learned from her is the way of approaching a question, the reasoning, the hypotheses testing, and thinking outside the box. Lacey, thank you for the opportunity of being your student, for all the conversations and discussions. I’m not going to lie, you are tough sometimes :) but I’m a better scientist today because of you, and I will keep working hard to improve. It is well established that hydrologic and geomorphic dynamics are the primary drivers of habitat change in river floodplains over extended time periods. However, the effect of fluctuating discharge on floodplain habitat structure during seasonal flooding is less well understood. We collected ultra-high resolution digital multispectral imagery of a gravel-bed river floodplain in western Montana on 6 dates during a typical seasonal flood pulse and used it to quantify changes in habitat abundance and diversity as- sociated with annual flooding. We observed significant changes in areal abundance of many habitat types, such as riffles, runs, shallow shorelines, and overbank flow. However, the relative abundance of some habitats, such as back- waters, springbrooks, pools, and ponds, changed very little. We also examined habitat transition patterns through- out the flood pulse. Few habitat transitions occurred in the main channel, which was dominated by riffle and run habitat. In contrast, in the near-channel, scoured habitats of the floodplain were dominated by cobble bars at low flows but transitioned to isolated flood channels at moderate discharge.

Because this structure is present only in adult males, it is hypothesized that these cells secrete a reproduction-related pheromone. The hypothesis that the caudal organ releases chemicals that attract females is tested in Mimagoniates inequalis. In a Y-maze and an aquarium, females were attracted to a caudal organ extract and to water that was conditioned with caudal organ-bearing males, respectively, but not to caudal-fin lobe extract or water conditioned with males from which the caudal organs were removed (control stimuli). In tests with male-female pairs, there were no differences in the responses to caudal organ extract and male caudal organ-conditioned water, but the responses to both stimuli differed in relation to the controls. Male-female pairs engaged in fewer courtship events and more agonistic interactions than they did without chemical stimuli and with control stimuli. These results provide evidence for a possible pheromonal system in M. inequalis. The caudal organ is a specialized secretory structure that produces a chemical signal that attracts females and increases the aggressiveness of males. Reis* Microlepidogaster discontenta, new species, is described from a creek tributary to the upper rio São Francisco basin, central Brazil, and constitutes the first record of the genus in that basin. It is distinguished from all congeners mainly by the odontodes on the caudal peduncle being conspicuously arranged in longitudinal lines (vs. odontodes on the caudal peduncle not arranged in longitudinal lines); and shorter pectoral-pelvic fins distance. Addition- ally, the new species differs from all congeners except M. longicolla by having a wide naked area on the snout tip (vs. an inconspicuous naked area or a rostral plate). Microlepidogaster discontenta is further distinguished from its congeners by a series of proportional measurements of the body and osteological features.
