Most people in sports I have talked to in my classes don't really like eastern that much (no #GoEags pride), they just go here because it's cheap because of sports scholarships. This doesn't really seem like the right energy that we want. This is only a small sample size though, I didn't meet that many sportspeople. While sports are the easiest and most classic thing to get "school spirit" I think if enough brainstorming was done we could have the same effect with other means. Although this itself could be costly. I think if we pushed clubs more and intermural sports that could have the same effect. If more people are personally involved in Eastern events that is more meaningful than being a fan in some ways. These people would also pass along this pride and possibly get more people to join. I also think if we haven't already let alumni know that we need extra money for sports to continue the way they always have we should. Also, I know in the town hall meeting it was mentioned that they were doing an audit on all the majors and seeing which ones we should cut. I think this could be done with sports as well, sometimes you need a professional opinion.

They bring the school together and give everyone in the community an opportunity to show their appreciation for their university. The sweatshirt has no indications of any sports on it, but it makes me feel like I’m representing our athletics.

There are programs on this campus that have been reduced (long before this year) so far beyond the minimum of what should be an acceptable university program in terms of what the faculty have to work with to build their programs that I'm incredibly impressed that they're still existant at all! These programs, some that rely on the ability to work and be visible outside the confines of Eastern's walls for recuitment and reputation building, sit, and remain hidden away. You have to be seen to get noticed, and it helps to build a reputation that potential students actually want to be a part of when you want enrollments. It this all completely the fault of athletics students? Faculty? Perhaps not necessarily. But it is very telling that the health of sports (especially football) is extremely apparent while other programs are extremely unhealthy and have essentially no budget (not an exaggeration) to speak of. As I said, I have no problem with sports being a part of our experience here at Eastern. I do, however, question whether we can still truely call Eastern a place of equal learning for all students spanning all programs. Or whether a more apt decription might be a sports institution that with a periphery of educational opportunities (especially within the arts programs). Is the point here to not to be an educational institution? I think it is. And to bring the point home, some of us students just want a fair shake to make good things happen, and deliver within our own fields to bring some benefit and future to the university.

Funding should reflect these values. Additionally, to the criticism that athletics provide students scholarships: there are other ways to give scholarships if that is the purpose, and it should not be harder to get scholarships for an intelligent student with high grades than it is for a mediocre student with sports skills. The skills and qualities valued by scholarships (including non-meritorious qualities like low income, first generation, diversity, etc. - all valuable!) should likewise be reflected in how the money is actually distributed and to whom. As for overall university funding, I don't know the details but I'm inclined to wonder how much sports cost vs. how much they bring in, and whether a reinvestment in new fundraising

No matter how good of a team we create or how well we do in Division 1 the return on investment will never compare to that of a program like that of Gonzaga's Mens Basketball for two reasons. 1. Cheney is too far out of the way to make going to an event convenient for anyone but students and a few locals and 2. games are held outdoors at some of the coldest times of the year. Athletics are important for the school but they should be no where near as funded as they have been in the past few years.

4 we had freshman, jv, and varsity for football. I didn't play past freshman year because of some 10/23/2020 10:51 AM health issues followed by the running start program. The wrestling I participated in was ranked so there was varsity and everyone else. The girls wrestling didn't have the separation of skills like up above in the chart.
