Welcome to Korea Day: from Diasporic to Hallyu Fan-Nationalism
International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 3764–3780 1932–8036/20190005 Welcome to Korea Day: From Diasporic to Hallyu Fan-Nationalism IRINA LYAN1 University of Oxford, UK With the increasing appeal of Korean popular culture known as the Korean Wave or hallyu, fans in Israel among Korean studies students have joined—and even replaced— ethnic Koreans in performing nationalism beyond South Korea’s borders, creating what I call hallyu fan-nationalism. As an unintended consequence of hallyu, such nationalism enables non-Korean hallyu fans to take on the empowering roles of cultural experts, educators, and even cultural ambassadors to promote Korea abroad. The symbolic shift from diasporic to hallyu nationalism brings to the fore nonnationalist, nonessentialist, and transcultural perspectives in fandom studies. In tracing the history of Korea Day from the 2000s to the 2010s, I found that hallyu fan-students are mobilized both by the macro mission to promote a positive image of Korea in their home societies and by the micro motivation to repair their own, often stigmatized, self-image. Keywords: transcultural fandom studies, hallyu, Korean Wave, Korean studies, Korea Day, diasporic nationalism While talking with Israeli students enrolled in Korean studies (mostly female fans of Korean popular culture) in an effort to understand their motivations behind organizing Korea Day and promoting Korean culture in Israel in general, I was surprised when some of them used the Hebrew word hasbara, which literally translates as “explanation.” As a synonym for propaganda, hasbara refers to the public diplomacy of Israel that aims to promote a positive image of Israel to the world and to counter its delegitimization. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

Introduction In 2005, the Korean ambassador to China was excited about the completion within five years of the target trade volume of over $100 billion with China, which was set by the Korean government at the time of the inauguration of President Roh Moo-hyun in 2003. China also became the number one recipient of Korea’s outflow of investment as well as the destination of one of the largest groups of Korean students studying overseas. On the one hand, many businesspeople talk about the further importance of China, and they even send their children to China.1 On the other hand, many of the high-society households in Korea, especially in the Kangnam district that is considered to be the Korean Beverly Hills, hire ethnic Koreans who have returned from China to serve as their housemaids. On the increased importance of China for the Korean economy, there are two different schools of thought in Korean academia: one school argues that China is a mere clone or extension of other Asian countries that were once glorified as newly industrializing economies or high-performing Asian economies . -

STUDIA ORIENTALNE 2021, nr 2 (20) ISSN 2299-1999 https://doi.org/10.15804/so2021209 Haesung Lee1 Joseon Literati’s Righteous Principles (Yiriron) as a Moral Practice in the Political Realities – Its Meaning and Limitation in a Historical Context Introduction:Dohak – the Joseon Neo-Confucianism Neo-Confucianism flourished as a central ideology and absolute social order during the Joseon dynasty (朝鮮 1392–1910). “Neo-Confucianism” is a gen- eral term commonly applied to the revival of the various strands of Confucian philosophy during the Chinese Sòng dynasty (宋 960–1280 C.E.), re-exam- ined and reconstructed by Zhu Xi (朱熹, 1130–1200 AD.) It provided Koreans with philosophical speculation, moral and social norms, and a most strongly functional lifestyle. However, the terms of Joseon Neo-Confucianism con- note some specific characteristics, compared to classic Confucianism and the Chinese version of “Neo-Confucianism”2. The term of Dohak (道學 Chin. Dàoxué) – Dao (Way) Learning – already existed in classical Confucian context. However, in Korea, it is generally called Dohak (道學), which concerns Neo-Confucianism of the Joseon dynasty in a holistic scale. Thus, a proper understanding of the term Dohak is essential to comprehend the essence and particular characteristics of Korean Neo-Con- fucianism. Among the similar terms which refer to Neo-Confucianism, such as Jujahak (朱子學 Chin. Zhūzǐxué: Zhu Xi’s Science) and Jeongjuhak (程朱學 1 University of Wrocław, Poland, ORCID ID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5185-3586, e-mail: [email protected]. 2 The Korean Neo-Confucianism 1) was condensed rather into an anthropological, centripetal, and inward way such as the “Four-Seven” theory and Human Nature; 2) pursued to seek religious an ethical legitimacy under the name of Confucian teaching, even beyond logical rationality; 3) put much more emphasis on Righteousness and Fidelity in a macroscale; 4) clarified the Righteousness as a theoretic speculation on moral propriety. -

chapter 12 The Problem of China in the Study of the History of Korean Science: Korean Science, Chinese Science, and East Asian Science* Because of the Chinese origin of many ideas and artifacts of traditional Korean science, and the overwhelming Chinese influence on its development, the his- tory of Korean science suffers from a kind of identity crisis, based on the issue of whether traditional Korean science should be considered simply a part of Chinese science. Jeon Sang-woon, for example, begins his account of tradi- tional Korean science by referring to its history as “a tributary of the main- stream of scientific developments in traditional China.”1 But Jeon quickly adds that Koreans did not merely adopt ideas and techniques from China, but modi- fied them and adapted them to their own needs and conditions. This led to many ‘independent’ developments of Korean science, and often to new discov- eries and inventions. Much of the previous work – and indeed most of the early works by modern scholars – on traditional Korean science have focused on the new contributions by Koreans and their differences from the Chinese developments.2 Yet this raises a problem, which has been troubling me when I attempt to think in general terms about the history of traditional Korean science. The problem, which I call “the problem of China in the study of the history of Korean science,” is basically about the significance of the scientific ideas and technical artifacts from China that are apparently pervasive throughout tradi- tional Korean science and technology.3 What roles and meanings should be assigned to such ideas and techniques in the history of Korean science? It will provide more practice in a variety of Hangul writing styles in brush and pen writing (e.g. old Panbon style and Palace style with regular and cursive forms for brush writing). In addition, "Literary painting(Painting with literary themes). One of the main themes of the genre is "Sagunja (Four noble ones)" that consist of plum blossoms, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. Students will learn brush stroke techniques, composition, and essential skills and will develop an understanding of aesthetics of Korean calligraphy and Korean brush painting and its role in traditional Korean culture. Assessment: Students will be evaluated based on the midterm and calligraphy productions. Primary Source Document with Questions (DBQs) “ON ELIMINATING DOGMATISM AND FORMALISM AND ESTABLISHING JUCHE [CHUCH’E] IN IDEOLOGICAL WORK” (SPEECH, 1955) By Kim Ilsŏng Introduction After the end of colonial rule in 1945, political divisions within Korea interacted with the escalating Cold War tension between the United States and USSR, each of which had occupied and fostered a government in one half of the peninsula, to create the conditions that led to the Korean War (1950‐53). In the aftermath of that war, with its non‐decisive result, the separation of North and South Korean states (officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea, respectively) has been maintained to this day, continually reproduced until fairly recently by an atmosphere of mutual hostility. The Kim Ilsŏng (1912‐1994) government of the North considered itself the heir of the Communist anti‐imperialist struggle against Japanese forces in Manchuria. As time passed, other ideological foci came to supplement or even supplant Marxism‐Leninism as the central official state ideology. In this 1955 speech, entitled “On Eliminating Dogmatism and Formalism and Establishing Juche in Ideological Work,” Kim explained what he meant by juche (“subjectivity” in literal translation) and why it was important for North Korea.
