Full Program Welcome to IMPULSE 2015. This is an ambitious main-stage performance of ensemble works, showcasing dancers from all three years of the Professional Training Program. Tonight you will see an exciting collection of new choreography as well as renowned revivals. From him, I learned how personal and political views can affect art. Most of all, I learned about the power of humour. National Spirit was choreographed in 1976, a few years after the Vietnam War ended. Thanks to Alicia Fuller, Geanderson Mello, Sam Monk, and Olivia Stiernholm for their contributions to the creative process. - AV CHOREOGRAPHERS Dancer, improviser, teacher, and choreographer, MARC BOIVIN began his dance career at Le Groupe de la Place Royale in Ottawa under the directorship of Peter Boneham, and in 1985 joined Ginette Laurin and her newly formed company O Vertigo Danse, touring extensively throughout Europe and North America. Since 1991 he has worked as an independent dancer, performing for numerous choreographers. Affiliated with L’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal since 1987, Boivin regularly guest teaches and choreographs in schools and professional organizations across Canada. He has been president of the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault since 2006, president of the board of the RQD (Regroupement québécois de la danse) (2010-2014), and sat on the board of the Montreal Arts Council (2005-2010). In 1999, Boivin was awarded the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts, and in 2014 the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outsanding Male Performance, for Mélanie Demers’ duet WOULD, with Kate Holden. DANNY GROSSMAN is a renowned Canadian choreographer, performer, and teacher of modern dance. His unique artistic vision and extensive repertoire integrate humour, beauty, athleticism, and social commentary. In 1977, he formed his own company, creating a repertoire of more than 50 works. Grossman has been the recipient of the Dora Mavor Moore Award, the Jean A. Chalmers Award, The Dance Ontario Award, the Muriel Sherrin Award, and The Toronto Arts Council Foundation’s William Kilbourn Lifetime Achievement Award. LOUIS LABERGE-CÔTÉ is a Toronto-based dancer, choreographer, teacher, and rehearsal director. An acclaimed performer, he has danced nationally and internationally with over 20 companies, including Toronto Dance Theatre (1999-2007) and Kevin O’Day Ballett Nationaltheater Mannheim (2009-2011). He has created over 60 choreographic works, commissioned and presented in Canada and abroad. His work has garnered him a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography, as well as nominations for Performance and Choreography. A sought-after pedagogue, he is on faculty at Ryerson University and the National Ballet of Canada (In-Studio). He currently shares the Vice-Presidency of the Canadian Dance Assembly and is the Chair of the Dance Committee at the Toronto Arts Council. He is the recipient of the School’s 2015 Kathryn Ash Choreographic Commission Award. JULIA SASSO’s work has been commissioned and presented throughout Canada, in the United States, and abroad by the Canada Dance Festival, Dancemakers, Harbourfront Centre, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival of Canada, and Toronto Dance Theatre, among others. Sasso performed internationally with Dancemakers for sixteen seasons and continues to create and perform independently. She is a core faculty member and a Resident Choreographer of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s PTP and teaches in York University’s Department of Dance at the graduate and undergraduate levels. www.juliasasso.com Recipient of the Dance Ontario Innovation Award and the Manifesto Innovation & Originality Award, APOLONIA VELASQUEZ is the co-director of dance company Gadfly. Her work includes Dora Mavor Moore Award winning Klorofyl. She and artistic partner Ofilio Sinbadinho have created their technique known as Aybrid Movement. Velasquez has been commissioned to create work for Alias Dance Project, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Claudia Moore, and Ryerson Theatre School. Gadfly has been presented at Festival DansEncore, Luminato, Nuit Blanche, and Ontario Dance Weekend. Velasquez is also founder of the yearly TUDS Festival of Urban Dance Culture. Our mandate is to pursue theatre projects that we feel passionate about. We create, develop, and produce new Canadian plays. Anna Braumberger – Wolf Masks Anna Braumberger delights in the whimsical and bizzare which suits her very well in her work in the Vancouver Film industry set decoration department (IATSE Local 891). Having been professionally tasked in the last two years with everything from fabricating 80's neon art to occult decorated cow skulls for use in TV shows she still finds time for the occasional personal project. Starting in 2003 Anna began in a community Shakespeare group called "The Pressgang Theater Company" which worked every year on a shoestring budget to produce a play under the funding of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

    2014 KEYNOTE PANELS & WORKSHOPS KEYNOTE ADDRESS - NICOLE ROSE BOND Nicole Rose Bond began her formal dance training at York University, graduating cum laude with a BFAH in Dance in 2005. Since graduating, Nicole has felt privileged to perform in works by esteemed dance artists, choreographers and companies including Patricia Beatty, Coleman Lemieux et Compagnie, Dance Theatre David Earle, Danny Grossman Dance Company, Learie McNicholl, Susan Cash and Yvonne Ng. In the fall of 2012, Nicole was invited to work with Toronto Dance Theatre as a guest artist. Since that time, she has felt privileged to be a part of two cross-country tours of Christopher House’s Rivers, as well as many performances in Toronto, including Rare Mix, and Christopher House’s newest creation: Eleven Accords. Nicole feels incredibly grateful to be able to dance professionally in Canada, and deeply honoured to be working within a community of such gifted artists, whom inspire her every day. Amanda Hancox is a graduate of the Arts Educational School in England. Over her 30 year performance career she worked extensively across Canada as a dancer and an actress in theatre, film, and television. Amanda has been Executive Director of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre since 2006. Throughout her tenure at the DTRC, Amanda has contributed her expertise to a number of major international and national conferences. Additionally she acts as a consultant and presents workshops on career transition within and outside the arts community.

    2013 KEYNOTE PANELS & WORKSHOPS KEYNOTE ADDRESS - MICHAEL CALDWELL Michael Caldwell is a Toronto-based choreographer/performer. A graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, he has interpreted roles for many of Canada’s esteemed dance creators and companies, including Peggy Baker, Sylvie Bouchard, Danny Grossman, Guillaume Côté, Maxine Heppner, Sasha Ivanoch- ko, James Kudelka, Tedd Robinson, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, Corpus Dance Projects, Dusk Dances, and Kahawi Dance Theatre, among others, and has performed across Canada and the United States, in Europe, Asia, and Australia. Michael was an interpreter at Le Group Dance Lab, studying with the iconic Peter Boneham. He has also initiated a solo-commissioning project, performing in the work of established choreographers – Conrad Alexandrowicz, Danny Grossman, and Karen Jamieson. Michael is quickly emerging as a skilled, and critically acclaimed choreographer. His recent works include: Ash Unravel, an acclaimed solo based on his journey to Vietnam, The Horologium, a whimsical group piece created for Dusk Dances, Boogie Back, a community work for non-dancers in Porch View Dances, and Mary, a dynamic new solo for Stéphanie Tremblay Abudo. With a bachelor’s degree in film and art history from Syracuse University, Michael seeks to incorporate cinematic sensibilities in all his work. Upcoming, Michael will begin creation on a new group choreography, based on loneliness and isolation. Michael’s teaching experience varies from professional level contemporary technique classes to inten- sive workshops for youth, the elderly, and the disabled. He has taught at various locations in Toronto, and across Ontario. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 19, 2009 is back at it… What happens when, in the beat of a heart, the inner rhythms that drive us change? A joyful Viennese waltz is interrupted by a heart murmur. Three dancers morph into a sinewy pulsating heart, magnifying the physical representation of heart surgery. Through powerful elevated duets, heartfelt struggle becomes a mutual push to recovery. Based on a true story, Alan Page shared his experience of emotions, physical being and factual, medical information associated with his own heart surgery. The first incarnation of HeartSurge was shown at fFida 2006 and now incorporates dance theatre, while intertwining social waltz with contemporary dance. Elizabeth Dawn Snell’s choreography brings passion and empathy to the piece, and as her second year at the Fringe, she brings a fresh, new experience to the stage. In January 1978, after a decade of growth, the School incorporated separately from the company. In 1979 the Professional Training Program was established by David Earle, and together the company and School moved into the studios and offices of their current home at 80 Winchester Street. To date the School maintains its affiliation with Toronto Dance Theatre, currently under the artistic direction of Christopher House. Under the artistic direction of Patricia Fraser since 1993, the School is devoted to providing a broad spectrum of movement classes for the serious dance artist and for the community. It comprises four divisions: the Professional Training Program (PTP): a full-time, three-year, post-secondary program providing training to students intent on a career in contemporary dance, Summer Intensives, Adult Recreational Classes, and our Young Dancers’ Program. This unit may be replicated using various topics such as a dancer, choreographer, company, dance style, or cultural style. TOPIC: Dancer/Choreographer David Earle RESOURCES: • Encyclopedia of Theatre Dance in Canada • Dance websites such as http://www.dtde.ca/index.php; http://www.dcd.ca/ • “David Earle” video from the Dancemakers series 1. Watch videos of dances created by David Earle. What are some of the qualities of movement that are seen in most of Earle’s dances? 2. Select a few shapes, movements, and/or qualities from Earle's choreography. Physically explore the selected movements, allowing the opportunity to improvise on any of them. 3. Read biographical information or stories on David Earle. 4. Complete a research project on David Earle. Students can be assigned a research topic to prepare and bring to class to share with each other. Examples: biographical information, compositions from various decades, the founding of the Toronto Dance Theatre, Dancetheatre David Earl etc. 5. As a class, learn a portion from one of Earle's pieces as accurately as possible. In pairs or small groups, create variations of a phrase and add it onto the original phrase. Variations may include changing the speed, the quality of movement, or the locomotor methods. 6. Write letters to David Earle (via Dancetheatre David Earle) to obtain any information about him. Have each student write a letter. Select one, preferably as a class, to send to David Earle and share the responses with the class.

The book provides simple text that younger children can follow along with and/or read on their own. Through effective character development, the author provides great insight into the primary colours and how they may be mixed to make new secondary colours. An example from the text: "Orange is red and yellow mixed together. No blue." Review Color Dance is a fabulous picture story that can be used in any primary and early junior classroom. In my experiences, I have used this text to allow students to create movement based on how the various colours inspire them. This process may begin with having students create a graphic organizer for one to two colours. Once you have reviewed students' webs, create a mass web on the board. Next, read Color Dance by Ann Jonas. Immediately after reading the text, have the students add to their webs. After some discussion, have the students find a spot in the room where they can stand or sit with their eyes closed.

    50TH 50 ANNIVERSARY SEASON 2017 / 2018 In 1968, three forward-thinking dance artists– Patricia Beatty, WELCOME TO TDT'S David Earle and Peter Randazzo– came together to establish a company and school that changed the face of Canadian dance. By encouraging innovation and collaboration, and acquiring a FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY permanent home for the two organizations, they planted seeds for the creation of a vast repertoire of Canadian works –almost SEASON 500 at last count– and the development of generations of dancers and choreographers. TDT continues to be an incubator for the development of dance artists, from emerging to senior, as shown by this year's Glass Fields program at the Fleck Dance Theatre, by our second Emerging Voices Project, and by our special co-presentation with Toronto Heritage Dance. We have toured across Canada since our inception and performed in many of the great cities of the world including New York, London, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Mumbai, Berlin and Mexico City. In this anniversary year, we travel to three cities in Colombia and perform in eleven Canadian cities coast to coast. Fifty years later, Toronto is a radically different city than it was in 1968. The company reflects the city back to itself by celebrating the power of community, the importance of critical engagement and the many ways that live performance can change our dialogue with the world. We have much to celebrate! None of it would be possible, this year or in the past, without the support of legions of donors, funders, volunteers, staff members and artists, and the love and attention of the audience.

[email protected] The School of Toronto Dance Theatre was established in 1968 by the founders of Toronto Dance Theatre: Patricia Beatty, David Earle, and Peter Randazzo. In January 1978, after a decade of growth, the School incorporated separately from the company. In 1979 the Professional Training Program was established by David Earle, and together the company and School moved into the studios and offices of their current home at 80 Winchester Street. To date the School maintains its affiliation with Toronto Dance Theatre, currently under the artistic direction of Christopher House. Under the artistic direction of Patricia Fraser since 1993, the School is devoted to providing a broad spectrum of movement classes for the serious dance artist and for the community. It comprises four divisions: the Professional Training Program (PTP): a full-time, three-year, post-secondary program providing training to students intent on a career in contemporary dance, Summer Intensives, Adult Recreational Classes, and our Young Dancers’ Program. The School has served as the foundation and inspiration for generations of dancers.
