  • If There's a Rulebook for Country Stardom — a How-To Guide For
If there's a rulebook for country stardom — a how-to guide for performers looking to climb the charts, fill the arenas with fans, and build a legacy — Eric Church certainly hasn't read it. He's never been a big fan of rules, anyway. He'd rather chase down success on his own terms, taking the road less traveled. "I’m a big believer that everything you do should always be a little different than what you've done before," says the songwriter, whose milestones include 10 chart-topping singles, five Platinum-selling albums, seven ACM Awards, four CMA trophies, and 10 GRAMMY nominations. In a genre built upon tradition, Church has become a new kind of country icon — one who still writes songs anchored by his southern roots, but regularly reaches far outside the genre's safety zone, too. He hits a new peak with Heart & Soul, a collection of three albums created during a single month in the North Carolinian mountains. These 24 tracks capture Church at his very best, matching raw storytelling and climactic hooks with performances that blur the lines between country, soul, Bible Belt funk, and renegade rock & roll. Produced by longtime collaborator Jay Joyce and split into three separate records — Heart, Soul, and the six-track & — Heart & Soul is unlike any project in Church's catalog… which is exactly the way he likes it. "The artists that I love are the ones who do something new with every album they make," he says. "They'll write from a different perspective or record in a different place.

  • KACEY MUSGRAVES Two Decades Ago — Long Before Same Trailer
KACEY MUSGRAVES Two decades ago — long before Same Trailer Different Park turned her into a Grammy-winning country star with sold-out tours and Top 10 hits — Kacey Musgraves participated in her first (and only) beauty pageant. "My hometown is pretty famous for its sweet potatoes," she says, "and every year, they hold the Golden Sweet Potato Festival. They crown a Sweet Potato Queen and a Little Miss Tater Tot for little girls. I only competed for Little Miss Tater Tot once, when I was about three, and lost mis- erably to a girl in a sparklier dress." The pageant world, with its fake smiles and sky-high hairdos, wasn't the best match for Mus- graves. She was more interested in songwriting, finishing her very first tune at 9 years old and learning her first instrument, the mandolin, as a pre-teen. Years later, though, the peculiarities of daily life in a small town — along with the places she's visited (and people she's met) since mov- ing away— are back on her mind. It's been years since Musgraves lived in Golden, Texas, her childhood home of roughly 600 peo- ple, but the whirlwind that followed Same Trailer Different Park — a debut album that topped the country charts, took home two Grammy Awards (including Country Album of the Year) and sent Musgraves halfway across the world on tour — made her think hard about where she came from. Pageant Material, her second album, pays tribute to those Bible Belt roots, shining a light on a hometown girl who's grown up, expanded her worldview and done a lot of livin' since skip- ping town.

  • Kacey Musgraves: Inspired by Small-Town Roots
Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum • Words & Music • Grades 3–6 Kacey Musgraves: Inspired by Small-town Roots By the time she started taking guitar lessons at age twelve, Kacey Musgraves had already spent four years singing at public events. But her guitar teacher challenged Musgraves to do more than play and sing. “He saw that I dabbled in writing a bit and really pushed me to work on that,” Musgraves said. “My assignment was to go home and try to write a song. I fell in love with it.” Born on August 21, 1988, in the east Texas town of Sulphur Springs, Musgraves grew up in nearby Golden, a town with fewer than two hundred residents. At age eight, she learned to yodel, dressed up in cowgirl outfits, and began performing classic country songs at small amateur shows in the area. Her guitar teacher John DeFoore – who also taught Miranda Lambert, another country star from east Texas – pushed Musgraves to discover her own country music identity. “When I first started writing my own songs, they were pretty bad,” she said. “I hadn’t found my own voice yet. [But] I learned not to be scared to just throw an idea out there.” At age eighteen, she moved to Austin, Texas, to work on a singing career, and earned a spot on the television singing competition Nashville Star, placing seventh. In 2008, she moved witty lyrics inspired by growing up in a small town. The album won to Nashville, where she decided to focus on songwriting, and was two Grammys.

  • FRONT COVER There We Were in the Middle of Making This Record and a Total Solar Eclipse Darkened Nashville on My Birthday
GOLDEN HOUR KACEY MUSGRAVES FRONT COVER There we were in the middle of making this record and a total solar eclipse darkened Nashville on my birthday. My 29th year. A golden hour in my young-adult life. There are certain junctures that you can’t think your way through - you just have to feel. I found myself at one making this album. It was like the Universe was majestically saying “this is a time to be present, to witness the beauty of this incredible world you are lucky to be alive in” despite it being more complicated than ever and filled with so much darkness. We all need a little light right now. We all need for compassion and art to flourish. We need to remember that when moving forward feels impossible, somehow new love still finds its way up through the cracks in the sidewalk. The sun still rises and the birds still sing. Inspiration finds its way to you again. There are different masks we all wear that represent different sides of ourselves. None of them are solely us and yet they all are. There’s the lonely girl - the blissful girl - the new wife - the daughter missing her mother - the hopeful girl - the selfish girl - the sarcastic, rhinestoned Texan - the shy girl and the life of the party - the winner and the loser. They are all characters on this record. None of them alone are me and yet they all are. The golden hour is when all the masks come together as one and you can see, in perfect light, the whole picture of me.
