Of these, the imports originating from the EU represent 75% in value and 50% in volume. CN 8 Code Product Vol (100 kg) Val (EUR) 3024100 Fresh or chilled herring "Clupea 899 89.381 harengus, Clupea pallasii" 3029000 Fresh or chilled fish livers and roes 396 275.276 3035100 Frozen herrings "Clupea harengus, 72.207 6.193.494 Clupea pallasii" 3039090 Frozen fish livers and roes 6.972 1.389.296 3049923 Frozen meat "Weather or not minced" of 2.202 257.731 herring "Clupea harengus, Clupea Pallasii" (Excl. fillets) 3052000 Fish livers and roes, dried, smoked, salted 142 221.698 or in brine Herring is imported in small quantities, mainly frozen and mostly from the EU. Of the 7.220 tonnes of imported frozen herring, 97% were from the EU, at a value of 6,05 million EUR. In general, there are very few quantities of herring roes imported as individual item/as such. The majority of roes used by industry are the “by-products” of the frozen herring that is imported for processing (e.g. smoking or marinating). On average, the roes make up to 8-10% of the weight of a herring and their quality is subject to the season when herring was captured. There are a few business that import herring roes directly, mainly frozen and to a lesser extend salted. An example is the Association of Romanian Importers and Processors which imports ca. 50 tonnes of frozen herring roes per year. In general roes are used for the preparation of salads, a product that is quite popular with the Romania consumers. However these prefer products made with roes originating from local fresh water fish (e.g. carps, pike - Esox lucius). For the preparation of salads, (herring) roes may be mixed with vegetable oil, other smoked fish, onion, vegetables, etc. On average, in the processing industry, 16-20 kg of salad can be obtained from 1 kg of herring roes. The consumption of fish and fish products in Romania is quite low, estimated at 5,5 kg/inhabitant/year (source: FAO, quantity tin live weight). The great majority of fish and fish 1 products are sold by hyper-and supermarkets chains. There is no information regarding the consumption of roes and/or roe products/salads. In retail/supermarkets, roes are either sold 1) raw/salted, or under the form of 2) roe salads/prepared. A research in four supermarkets chains Kaufland, Carrefour, Selgros, Auchan, and 2 cities, Bucharest (capital, ca. 2,0 million inhabitants) and Iasi (350.000 inhabitants, the most important town in the eastern side of the country) revealed the following products and prices. Salted roes This product is bought for further preparation at home. It is sold either pre-packed in 100 g plastic packaging or in bulk (at the fresh-fish counter). Prices were EUR/kg 6,03 – 7,82 (27-35 RON/kg), in bulk; EUR/kg 8,93 (40 RON/kg) - 100 g packing); EUR/kg 11,17 (50 RON/kg) - 80 g packing, salt content: 14%. For comparison, prices for other salted fish roes were: capelin –EUR/kg 20,10 (90 RON/kg); carp – EUR/kg 17,87 – 22,11 (80-99 RON/kg). Roe salads These are sold under a large variety of combinations, with different proportions of other fish, roes, vegetables, oil, spices, etc. Prices vary from EUR/kg 2,23 – 6,25 (10 to 28 RON/kg), depending on the producers, seller/supermarket, product (e.g. roe content). After just a few notable events during 2015, the Romanian retail market experienced remarkable growth in 2016 reaching 2,000 stores operated by international retailers. As modern retail systems grow, exports of U.S. processed and high value foods to Romania will continue to expand. In 2015 U.S. agri- food exports to Romania increased by 45 percent from U.S. $96 million to U.S. $139 million over the last year. Romania's food sector is expected to be among the regional best performers during the next five years, with promising market prospects for U.S. exporters such as tree nuts, distilled spirits and wines. General Information: I. MARKET SUMMARY General Information Romania has been a member of the EU since 2007 and a member of NATO since 2004. Within the 28 EU countries, Romania has the seventh largest population, with 19.5 million inhabitants. Romania is presently a market with outstanding potential, a strategic location, and an increasingly solid business climate. Although there is the need for an exporter to evaluate the market in order to assess the business opportunities, exporting to Romania is steadily becoming less challenging than in previous years in terms of the predictability of the business environment.

  • Retailer Scorecard Summary
WWF Programul Dunăre Carpați România Proiectul Fish Forward Dumitru Zosima nr 38, București Tel.: +4021 317 49 96 Fax: +4021 317 49 97 [email protected] wwf.ro/peste 22.02.2017 Summary Through the annual study ”Retailer Scorecard”, WWF-Romania evaluates the environmental performance of the main food retailers present on the Romanian markets, by analysing their sustainability policies and the certified and/or local products available. This is the fifth edition of the Retailer Scorecard report and it is encouraging to see that more and more retailers take precaution regarding environmental responsibility through the products they offer. The study includes the top 11 food retailers in Romania. In 2016, those were: Auchan, Billa, Carrefour, Cora, Kaufland, Lidl, Mega Image, Metro, Penny Market, Profi and Selgros. The results from 2016’s edition show improvements of the results for the majority of participants which demonstrate the increasing interest the retailers have in this sector. Regardless, the progress is rather slow as the best scores are still meeting half of the maximum possible. The most important results and observations from the 2016’s Retailer Scorecard edition are: ● Five out of the 11 retailers have obtained scores of more than 50%. ● None of the evaluated retailers has a transparent and complete communication with their clients about the purchasing policies which favor environmental friendly products. The only information available regarding this subject can be found on their web pages - about specific initiatives in Romania. The majority of the information concerns the international group they belong to. Summing up, there isn’t enough information to help the consumer make the right decision.

Targeting chains stores is useless through an intermediate company ,reseller or distributor company because of operational costs and difference in selling policy. If your products will be placed on IKA shelves by an reseller or distribution company this items will be expensive with 100% then origin and sales will be very low. For that purpose we established and register you Romanian Branch with minimum cost ,effort and time from your company. Your Romanian Branch will sell to All IKA chain stores and Big Resellers on Romanian + Republic of Moldova territory. Your goods can be branded , private label or bulk products . Romanian market proved to be a good business environment for retailers as long as consumption is increasing determined by the growth of wages and reduction of VAT. Both hypermarkets, supermarkets, discount stores and minimarkets have appeared on Romania's map and their number continue to grow as expected in the near future. The number of square meters commercial space per inhabitant is enough high as long as Romanians like shopping. For this reason, the retailers have to develop new strategies to strengthen their business and cover much better consumers' needs. Important efforts should be made to develop the minimarket network in the smaller cities and even in the rural localities, the commercial space should be modernized and offer a pleasant and attractive environment for shopping, e-commerce should be extended as a modern purchasing alternative, the offer should be diversified including more Romanian products as preferred by consumers, organic products should be more visible on the shelves which have to offer healthy products to the clients, a more intensive advertising should be useful for a better information of the consumers and for increasing sales and profit of the retailers.

  • Retail Supermarket Globalization: Who’S Winning?
RETAIL SUPERMARKET GLOBALIZATION: WHO’S WINNING? October 2001 CORIOLISRESEARCH Coriolis Research Ltd. is a strategic market research firm founded in 1997 and based in Auckland, New Zealand. Coriolis primarily works with clients in the food and fast moving consumer goods supply chain, from primary producers to retailers. In addition to working with clients, Coriolis regularly produces reports on current industry topics. Recent reports have included an analysis of the impact of the arrival of the German supermarket chain Aldi in Australia, answering the question: “Will selling groceries over the internet ever work?,” and this analysis of retail supermarket globalization. ! The lead researcher on this report was Tim Morris, one of the founding partners of Coriolis Research. Tim graduated from Cornell University in New York with a degree in Agricultural Economics, with a specialisation in Food Industry Management. Tim has worked for a number of international retailers and manufacturers, including Nestlé, Dreyer’s Ice Cream, Kraft/General Foods, Safeway and Woolworths New Zealand. Before helping to found Coriolis Research, Tim was a consultant for Swander Pace (now part of Kurt Salmon) in San Francisco, where he worked on management consulting and acquisition projects for clients including Danone, Heinz, Bestfoods and ConAgra. ! The coriolis force, named for French physicist Gaspard Coriolis (1792-1843), may be seen on a large scale in the movement of winds and ocean currents on the rotating earth. It dominates weather patterns, producing the counterclockwise flow observed around low- pressure zones in the Northern Hemisphere and the clockwise flow around such zones in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the result of a centripetal force on a mass moving with a velocity radially outward in a rotating plane.
