Sarah Williams The weather was simply glorious, blue skies with just enough cloud to stop everyone frazzling in the heat and it was a real joy walking around the village to see so many people out and enjoy- ing the beautiful gardens – it felt close to being normal and I think everyone will agree we’ve all missed that. The sense of excitement from so many was truly palpable. Our huge thanks to all the people who welcomed visitors into their gardens. It is their hard work in the lead-up and on the day itself that makes this event so successful – even now after 23 years of Open Gardens. The charm of the village and our varied gardening styles in and around each of the locations make us a prime Open Garden event – this year even more so as we were the first one on the calendar.

  • Babergh District Councillor Derek Davis – Ganges Ward (Shotley
Babergh District Councillor Derek Davis – Ganges ward (Shotley & Erwarton) We are into the school summer holidays and as the dad of a teenager I know how difficult it can be for parents keeping their young ones active during these six weeks. It was with that in mind that my first act as Cabinet member for Communities, was to instigate the free swim initiative for all those Babergh residents who are 16 and under. At the moment this is for use at both our Hadleigh and Kingfisher pool in Sudbury. Ideally moving forward, we will be able to liaise with other pools in Suffolk, especially Ipswich for us on the peninsula, but one stroke at a time. This has come about due to our great partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure, that also runs the sports centre at Holbrook, and we are working with them to run outdoor explorer activity days, with at least one coming to Shotley. Details were being finalised at the time of writing this so please keep an eye out on my Facebook page for confirmed dates etc, or go to: https://www.acleisure.com/blog/ Another initiative we have been involved in is the Active Suffolk programme encouraging primary schools to encourage their pupils to take part in a wide range of activities, whether that is the daily mile walk, archery, dance, Tchouckball, or the traditional football and netball. The project, run in partnership with NHS West Suffolk and NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) will run for three years with the support of Active Suffolk, the Active Partnership for Suffolk dedicated to increasing the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity.

  • Woolverstone Parish Council
Submission from Woolverstone Parish Council As we understand it, the aim of the electoral review is to recommend ward boundaries that mean: 1. Each councillor represents approximately the same number of voters. 2. Ensure that the pattern of wards reflects the interests and identities of local communities 3. Promoting effective local government. We do not feel in Woolverstone that the recommendations as they stand reflect the interests and identities of villages on the Shotley peninsula. In addition that the proposed ward of "Chelmondistan" deprives us of a constituency which includes our Surgery and our Local Academy. It also excludes one of the main shopping areas on the Peninsula Furthermore, the proposals ignore our historical connectivity through the Berners estate. In addition, they fail to notice the road network connections and take into account the integrity of the area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which covers a large area of the Shotley Peninsula Woolverstone Parish Council does not agree with your proposals for the Shotley Peninsula as expressed in the “Draft recommendations on the new electoral arrangements for Babergh District Council.” We also note that no reference was made to Woolverstone’s submission when discussing issues on the Shotley Peninsula in the section “Chelmondistan” p9. Firstly, we are at a loss to understand the chosen spelling of “Chelmondistan” as the name for the ward it is proposed Woolverstone is part of. This must be a misspelling, surely. Secondly, we agree with the ward of Shotley having a single councillor and including Erwarton. We suggest the name of Ganges for this ward recognising the historical connections.

  • The Evolution of Puritan Mentality in an Essex Cloth Town: Dedham and the Stour Valley, 1560-1640
The Evolution of Puritan Mentality in an Essex Cloth Town: Dedham and the Stour Valley, 1560-1640 A.R. Pennie Submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Research conducted in the Department of History. Submitted: November, 1989. bs. 1 The Evolution of Puritan Mentality in an Essex Cloth Town: Dedham and the Stour Valley, 1560-1640 A.R. Pennie Summary of thesis The subject of this thesis is the impact of religious reformation on the inhabitants of a small urban centre, with some reference to the experience of nearby settle- ments. Dedham has a place in national history as a centre of the Elizabethan Puritan Movement but the records of the Dedham Conference (the local manifestation of that movement), also illustrate the development of Reformed religion in Dedham and associated parishes. The contents of the thesis may be divided into four sections. The first of these concerns the material life of the inhabitants of Dedham and the way in which this generated both the potential for social cohesion and the possibility of social conflict. The second section examines the attempt at parish reformation sponsored by the ministers associated with the Dedham Conference and the militant and exclusive doctrine of the Christian life elaborated by the succeeding generation of preachers. The third element of the thesis focuses on the way in which the inhabitants articulated the expression of a Reformed or Puritan piety and, on occasion, the rejection of features of that piety. The ways in which the townspeople promoted the education of their children, the relief of the poor and the acknowledgement of ties of kinship and friendship, have been examined in terms of their relationship to a collective mentality characterized by a strong commitment to 'godly' religion.
