  • Babergh District Councillor Derek Davis – Ganges Ward (Shotley
Babergh District Councillor Derek Davis – Ganges ward (Shotley & Erwarton) We are into the school summer holidays and as the dad of a teenager I know how difficult it can be for parents keeping their young ones active during these six weeks. It was with that in mind that my first act as Cabinet member for Communities, was to instigate the free swim initiative for all those Babergh residents who are 16 and under. At the moment this is for use at both our Hadleigh and Kingfisher pool in Sudbury. Ideally moving forward, we will be able to liaise with other pools in Suffolk, especially Ipswich for us on the peninsula, but one stroke at a time. This has come about due to our great partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure, that also runs the sports centre at Holbrook, and we are working with them to run outdoor explorer activity days, with at least one coming to Shotley. Details were being finalised at the time of writing this so please keep an eye out on my Facebook page for confirmed dates etc, or go to: https://www.acleisure.com/blog/ Another initiative we have been involved in is the Active Suffolk programme encouraging primary schools to encourage their pupils to take part in a wide range of activities, whether that is the daily mile walk, archery, dance, Tchouckball, or the traditional football and netball. The project, run in partnership with NHS West Suffolk and NHS Ipswich and East Suffolk clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) will run for three years with the support of Active Suffolk, the Active Partnership for Suffolk dedicated to increasing the number of people taking part in sport and physical activity.

  • Woolverstone Parish Council
Submission from Woolverstone Parish Council As we understand it, the aim of the electoral review is to recommend ward boundaries that mean: 1. Each councillor represents approximately the same number of voters. 2. Ensure that the pattern of wards reflects the interests and identities of local communities 3. Promoting effective local government. We do not feel in Woolverstone that the recommendations as they stand reflect the interests and identities of villages on the Shotley peninsula. In addition that the proposed ward of "Chelmondistan" deprives us of a constituency which includes our Surgery and our Local Academy. It also excludes one of the main shopping areas on the Peninsula Furthermore, the proposals ignore our historical connectivity through the Berners estate. In addition, they fail to notice the road network connections and take into account the integrity of the area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which covers a large area of the Shotley Peninsula Woolverstone Parish Council does not agree with your proposals for the Shotley Peninsula as expressed in the “Draft recommendations on the new electoral arrangements for Babergh District Council.” We also note that no reference was made to Woolverstone’s submission when discussing issues on the Shotley Peninsula in the section “Chelmondistan” p9. Firstly, we are at a loss to understand the chosen spelling of “Chelmondistan” as the name for the ward it is proposed Woolverstone is part of. This must be a misspelling, surely. Secondly, we agree with the ward of Shotley having a single councillor and including Erwarton. We suggest the name of Ganges for this ward recognising the historical connections.

  • Drinkstone Neighbourhood Plan
DRINKSTONE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN %8,/7&+$5$&7(5 $335$,6$/ 129(0%(5 Introduction This character assessment has been prepared by the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group to identify and describe the distinctive features, appearance and feel of Drinkstone. The Steering Group was assisted by Places4People Planning Consultancy, and this assessment is based on the guidelines published by Planning Aid England, a town planning advisory organisation that is part of the Royal Town Planning Institute. It states that “A character assessment is a document that describes the distinct appearance and feel of a settlement or an area. It communicates the key physical features and characteristics that combine to give a particular settlement or an area its local distinctiveness and unique identity” In addition to the Built Character Appraisal, a separate Landscape Appraisal has also been undertaken addressing the landscape in which the village sits. It identifies landform, underlying geology, special landscape areas, important features including views, woodland, pond and hedgerows across the parish. A subgroup of the Steering Group identified 7 distinct character areas of the built-up areas in the parish, as identified in the maps on the following pages. Members of the Steering Group assessed these areas by walking the roads and footpaths using the Planning Aid guidelines that cover: • Topography • Land uses • Layout • Roads, streets and routes • Spaces • Buildings • Landmarks • Green and natural features • Streetscape • Views 3 In addition, detailed information on individual buildings, covering age, history and construction, was incorporated from the output of a Millennium project “Drinkstone 2000 - a photographic survey of the village at the turn of the century”.
