The only rider in the race with a Grand Tour podium to his name, Chaves was the favourite for the stage, but his form remained uncertain after a disappointing 2017 season disrupted by a knee injury. However Chaves has clearly enjoyed a good off-season, as he displayed scintillating early-season form by attacking at the base of the finishing climb to Lake Mountain, crossing the line 42 seconds ahead of the impressive Alexander Evans (Modius- BridgeLane) with the main group of chasers including defending champion Damien Howson (Mitchelton-Scott) at 1-09. With the race starting from the Mitchelton Winery a Mitchelton- Scott victory always seemed in the stars but the WorldTour team didn’t have any riders represented in the 10-rider breakaway which got away soon after the start. In the move were Matt Ross (KordaMentha-Australia), Etienne Van Empel (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Edmund Bradbury (JLT Condor), Brad Evans (Mobius BridgeLane), Steele von Hoff (Bennelong SwissWellness), Nicholas Reddish (Oliver’s Real Food Racing), Ashley Mackay (Australian Cycling Academy), Esteban Chaves Jonathan Noble (Brisbane Continental), Kane Richards and Alexander Ray (McDonalds-Down Under). • 2019 Pocket Guide
    - 2019 Pocket Guide - PLENTY of people ask what the Cheltenham Festival means to me. Well, there is no bigger thrill for a jockey than riding a winner at the meeting. I’ve been lucky enough to ride one there every year since 2006 and will be bidding to keep that run going. I promise you that plans and thoughts for the following year’s Festival will begin for most on their way out of Cheltenham on Friday night. New dreams will be born. On the subject of dreams, I remember vividly riding the finish to Dawn Run’s Gold Cup with my legs straddling the sofa as a lad at home. I sometimes have to pinch myself all these years down the line to think that I’m now living that dream. Hopefully you will find this handy pocket guide to this year’s Festival useful as it’s packed full of stats and trends. The build-up to this year’s meeting has been unlike anything I can ever remember with plenty of horses’ preparations potentially affected by the equine influenza saga. It has a more open feel than ever before. Anyway, I will be providing a daily blog throughout the meeting. It only remains for me to wish you the best of luck and here’s hoping for plenty of winners! Cleeve Racing’s National Hunt Ten to Follow 2015-2016 Cleeve Racing Ten to Follow ©Cleeve Racing Limited 2015 Introduction We have deliberately left out the blindingly obvious horses from this list, as pretty much every other ten to follow list will include some or all of the following: Douvan, Faugheen, Vautour, Annie Power, Coneygree, Don Poli, Djakadam, Silviniaco Conti, Dodging Bullets and Un de Sceaux. All ten of those horses are likely to win many of the major races in the coming season; however are likely to be at prohibitive odds due to their established credentials. The horses included in this Ten to Follow are very well worth backing all season. As most things that are free most people will read the report once and then store it on their hard drive and forget about it. We do however have a service for everyone that wants to follow the selections. The Ten Follow service sends you an email every time one of the selections is running and we will highlight weather we think the right conditions exist for the selections to have a good chance of winning.
