NARC 2021 Activity 20 Age 5 Creativity & Imagination Comic Book presents National All Rounder Championship 1 May 2021 - 31 July 2021 Self-Learning Manual: Activity 20 Creativity and Imagination: Comic book Age: 5 years Activity description The child is required to create 3 drawings either in 3 frames or on 3 pages. The look of the characters in the drawings have to be similar unless is required to be different as part of the storyline. The child is required to record a video where the child is narrating a story connecting the 3 drawings in a sequence. In the video, the child is required to show the drawing & share the story related to the drawing. Each drawing can be shown only once & the story has to be sequential connecting the drawing. The drawings have to be relevant to the story being narrated. The child has to speak from memory & is not allowed to read from anywhere or be prompted the story. The entire video has to be recorded at one go & no video editing/merging is allowed. Once the child is ready, record the video & submit. Assessment guidelines The total non-bonus points for this activity is 30. Every submission would be rated as either of below. M = Master The child can narrate a story connecting 3 self-drawn drawings as instructed in (100%) less than 45 seconds The child can narrate a story connecting 2 self-drawn drawings as instructed in I = Intermediate less than 30 seconds (80%) B = Beginner The child can narrate a story about 1 self-drawn drawing as instructed in less (50%) than 15 seconds For participating in the event & making an event relevant submission which does A = Aspirant not meet assessment guidelines for M, I or B. (25%) NA (Not applicable) No submissions or any submission which is irrelevant for the activity. 50% bonus marks: If the child securing an M can narrate a story connecting 5 self-drawn drawings as instructed in less than 90 seconds National All Rounder Championship 2021 Expert coach speaks A comic strip is a sequence of drawings, often cartoon, arranged in interrelated panels to display brief humour or form a narrative, often serialized, with text in balloons and captions. Strips are written and drawn by a comics artist, known as a cartoonist. As the word "comic" implies, strips are frequently humorous. But because "comic" strips are not always funny, cartoonist Will Eisner has suggested that sequential art would be a better genre-neutral name. Traditionally, comic strips were published in Newspaper but have become popular as Webcomics as well. He also provided his experience with, ideas about, and vision for transmedia storytelling during in-depth interviews with me, the organizer of the conference. I divide this article into two major sections—Yoon’s keynote speech in the first part and the interview in the second part—to give readers engaging and interesting perspectives on webtoons and transmedia storytelling. I organized his talk into several major subcategories based on key dimensions. I expect that this kind of unusual documentation of this famous webtoonist will shed light on our discussions about Korean webtoons and their transmedia storytelling prospects. The Korean webtoon industry has grown rapidly, and many talented webtoonists, including Ju Ho-min, Kang Full, and Yoon Tae Ho, are now among the most famous and successful webtoonists since the mid-2000s. Their webtoons—in particular, Yoon Tae Ho’s, including Moss (Ikki, 2008–2009), Misaeng (2012–2013), and Inside Men (2010–in progress)—have gained huge popularity, and all were successfully transformed into films, television dramas, and digital games.

Comics and Controversy: A Brief History of Comic Book Publishing by Thomas A. Crowell, Esq. The great comic book artist, Will Eisner, defined the comic as a form of “sequential art.”1 Indeed, the narrative use of a series of images is as old as art itself: Cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and medieval tapestries are all precursors to the comic book. Yet comics and controversy have been linked from the very start: Founder of the Protestant movement, Martin Luther, was an early target of editorial cartoons (well, engravings anyway); his critics created caricatures of him as a tool of the devil2 (so in a sense, Spider-Man can trace his origins, not just from a radioactive spider, but also from the Reformation). With the advent of the printing press and the proliferation of newspapers and broadsheets, satirical political cartoons soon began to appear. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, editorial cartoons were a staple in the newspapers of the day. Benjamin Franklin’s famous “Join, or Die” is acknowledged as the first political cartoon in America, and served to galvanize support for colonial unity. In 1837 the first graphic novel was published by Swiss cartoonist Rudolphe Töpffer and was serialized in the American newspapers as “The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck.”3 Although conspicuously missing our now-familiar word balloons and sound effects, the comic book panel 1 Comics & Sequential Art.     Studies in Visual Arts and Communication: an international journal Vol 4, No 1 (2017) on-line ISSN 2393 - 1221 Chinese Cartoon in transition: animal symbolism and allegory from the “modern magazine” to the “online carnival” Martina Caschera* Abstract By definition, the cartoon (satirical, single-panelled vignette) “reduces complex situations to simple images, treating a theme with a touch of immediacy. A cartoon can mask a forceful intent behind an innocuous facade; hence it is an ideal art of deception” (Hung, 1994:124). As well as their western counterparts, Chinese cartoonists have always based much of their art on the strong socio-political potential of the format, establishing a mutual dependence of pictographic material and press journalism. From a media perspective, the present paper shows how Chinese cartoon developed from 1920s-1930s society ̶ when the “modern magazine” was the most important reference and medium for this newly-born visual language – to the present. Cyberspace has recently become the chosen space for Chinese cartoonists’ visual satire to take part in an international public discourse and in the “online carnival” (Herold and Marolt, 2011:11-15), therefore replacing magazines and printed press. Through emblematic exempla and following the main narrative of “animal symbolism and allegory”, this paper intends to connect the historical background with cartoonists’ critical efficiency, communicative tools and peculiar aesthetics, aiming at answering to questions such as: how Chinese modern cartoon changed, from the first exempla conveyed in “modern magazines” to the latest online expressions? Is its original power of irreverence still alive and how did it survive? How modern cartoonists (Lu Shaofei, Liao Bingxiong) and contemporary cartoonists (Rebel Pepper, Crazy Crab, Ba Diucao) have been dealing with governmental intervention and censorship?     Jaqueline Berndt ‘Comfort Women’ Comics, Multi- faceted Revisiting the 2014 Manhwa Exhibit in Angoulême from the Perspective of Manga Studies Keywords: manga, manhwa, representation, genre, affect Introduction The International Comics Festival in Angoulême, held annually around the end of January, is the biggest of its kind in Europe, and it plays an important role also for Asian actors. While Japanese artists have been receiving festival awards since the late 1990s and Japanese publishers have been attending the festival as well, the Korean government began official participation in 2003.1 In view of the recent international tensions in East Asia, it is not surprising that such festivals, too, may become the site of political contention. Precisely this happened in early 2014. At the time, the 41st festival commemorated the centennial of World War I, and in relation to the subtheme of war-induced violence against women, the French organizers had accepted the proposal of a state-sponsored Korean exhibition featuring specially commissioned comics2 (Kor. manhwa) on 1 Followed by Hong Kong in 2011 and Taiwan in 2012. 2 I refrain from using the word comic book/s due to its connotation of a specific, American publication format. Sanders was a thorn in the side of politicians locally, especially Milwaukee Mayor Henry Maier, but presidents from Richard Nixon to Donald Trump also felt the heat from his pen. "He was a very passionate, hard-hitting cartoonist," said Sig Gissler, who worked with Sanders as editorial page editor from 1976 until Gissler became editor of the Journal in 1985. "He was a larger-than-life figure in the history of political cartooning in Milwaukee," said Stuart Carlson, who was a cartoonist at The Milwaukee Sentinel beginning in 1983. Sanders died Saturday at the age of 90. Despite working at the rival paper, Carlson said Sanders would act as a mentor. "He could have been a lot rougher on me than he was," Carlson said. "I think he loved the ungentlemanly art of political cartoon more than he valued his own position at the paper.
