XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018 5 foreword

or the seventh time, the Croatian athletes are participating under their own flag at the Mediterranean Games, a multi-sports event Fwith the almost seventy year old tradition. These Games have a special significance because they are held in the time when the four-year rhythm is lost and when many are asking questions on their meaning and purpose in the future.

But the Olympic flame that burns in female and male athletes from 26 countries on three continents should remain a guiding light for the future of the Mediterranean. Of course, the idea of Zlatko Mateša, PhD the Mediterranean Games should be modernized and given wind in their sails by practical innovations and refinements. Medals won in President of the the Mediterranean Games must brought back to the original glory, Croatian Olympic they should be included in athletes’ biographies with pride, as Committee numerous Croatian athletes did once, while enriching their trophy collections. On this tradition I build the belief that Croatia will be very successful in Tarragona. Among our 99 male and female representatives, there are many notable names, led by winners of Olympic gold medals, for example - in shooting or athletics.

I wish all the Croatian female and male athletes a successful per- formance and above all a personal satisfaction with the achieved results. I am sure that they will keep the Games in Tarragona in a beautiful memory and a valuable experience in their further ca- reer. Let it be a true festival of youth, sports and tolerance, presen- tation of skills through various disciplines and sports branches and above all - a demonstration of fair play and positive energy that will connect people from the Mediterranean in all the aspects of social activities in future.

6 XVIII Mediterranean Games Tarragona 2018 remember with nostalgy the 1975 and the Mediterranean Games in , where I participated in football. At that time, the I Games had a status of extremely important, prestigious and com- petitive event– and indeed they were. I remember the members of the National , Athletics as well as Football Team – they were mostly the best female and male athletes of the former state. Participating at the Games, especially being a medal winner, was a respectable result that had its “weight” and valorization.

Today, almost 40 years later, the Games have lost their value, their reputation and their meaning. Therefore, at the level of the - Josip Čop, BSc. Econ. an Olympic Committees, the Mediterranean Movement, and espe- cially among the countries participating at the Games, a consensus Secretary General should be reached on the purpose of the Mediterranean Games. The of the Croatian Olympic Committee result achieved at the Games is neither of a criterion type nor it bring points that would be relevant for going to – for example – the , it does not represent a criterion result for direct participation at the European Championships. Maybe it would be necessary to consider inclusion of athletes of up to 23 years of age in the Games, that the result achieved at the Mediterranean Games is the criteria for participating at - at least - one European Champi- onships up to 23 years of age. Maybe, but that’s just a suggestion to consider.

What do we expect from Croatian athletes at the Mediterranean Games? From the younger ones to test their competitiveness in that environment, from the older ones to turn their experience into medals and from all the participants at the Games, a good and proper behavior - proud, knightly and fair play presentation of Our Beautiful Homeland.
