2009 FIELD HOCKEY GUIDE 3 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY

HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS VIDEO Shelly Behrens made an immediate impact during her first season with the Millersville field hockey program. The Elizabethtown native and Lower Dauphin graduate was named head coach on August 7, 2008, and led the team to its winningest season since 1999.

Under Behrens’ guidance, the Marauders posted a 7-11 campaign, which was a three win improvement over the previous season. The Millersville roster boasted just one senior, but the young team flourished with Behrens as coach. She helped goalkeeper Sara Dickinson to the PSAC East Rookie of the Year award and Tori Bentsel to a spot on the womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie Squad.

Dickinson was the program’s first-ever rookie of the year, and while the program had just six players in the previous eight seasons named all-conference, three earned All-PSAC mention under Behrens, mark- ing the most since four were selected in 1998.

Behrens came to Millersville following a successful one-year stint at Oneonta State where she quickly transformed the program with a 10-9 overall record and a second-place finish in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).

“I am well aware of the history at Millersville,” Behrens said. “There is such a great tradition of field hockey players in the Harrisburg and Lancaster area,” said Behrens. “I am excited because (Athletic Behren’s File Director) Peg (Kauffman) and I are on the same page and have a shared vision for the program. 8 2009 FIELD HOCKEY GUIDE MARAUDERS

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK VIDEO

There is a feeling around the Millersville field hockey program that 2009 could be a breakthrough season.

Usually, a 7-11 record that included a 1-7 mark in conference play doesn’t breed optimism, but for the Marauders, which haven’t posted a winning season since 1998, it did exactly that. The seven victories were the most in eight years, and the club went 7-6 over after a slow 0-5 start.

Shelly Behrens, a veteran coach with Division I experience, is entering her second year at the helm and has big plans for Millersville field hockey. It could all start this year as the team returns every single player that scored a goal in 2008 and the reigning PSAC East Rookie of the Year in goalkeeper Sara Dickinson. Behrens also brought in an impressive haul of 14 newcomers that includes three transfers that could help immediately.

“It’s really the good and the unknown,” said Behrens. “The good thing is that we are very solid with our returners. Not just because the 11 coming back matches the number of players on the field but because they know me, I know them, and they have improved from fall to spring. The challenge is going to be creating the 2009 team. Players are going to be competing for spots. I like that. It will make us that much better. We’ll improve tremendously.”

While expectations are heightening, improvement will be a necessity if the team is to achieve its goals. The PSAC is without argument the most competitive conference in Division II. In the final NFHCA Coaches’ Poll of 2008, six of the top 10 teams-- in- cluding the top three--were from the PSAC.

“The conference is too competitive to say we are going to go out and win the conference,” said Behrens. “But what are our steps to get there? We want to improve on our record. I set up a challenging non-conference schedule to make us more competitive for the PSAC.

“We want to finish in the top two or three in the East and make the playoffs,” said of 20 goals over her three seasons. She was named All-PSAC East Second Team Behrens. “You have to be ready to go right away or else you are going to be at the last year. Her goal and assist numbers have climbed each year, and Behrens only bottom.” expects her to continue to get better.

Behrens remarked that she the program was fortunate to get both players. “The core is in place,” Behrens continued. “I think it’s realistic to be top two in the East. Why not see how good we can be now. What are we waiting for?” Ekom Enyong from Milton Hershey High School has outstanding speed and was an All-Mid-Penn Capital Division pick as a senior. And that seems to be the motto for the 2009 Millersville field hockey season. Why not us? Why not now? “I want a more balanced attack,” said Behrens. “If we can get some of the young players contributing and players all across the field scoring goals, we’ll be danger- ous. Some of our players scored their first college goals last year, so now they have Forward that experience. The more we can balance, the tougher we are to defend. ATHLETIC TRADITION VIDEO

Millersville University was founded in 1855—then known as Lancaster Normal School. In 1889, Millersville started playing intercollegiate athletics, beginning a tradition of excellence and pride that is entering its 121st year. Since the first baseball team took the field, the athletics department has grown into 22 teams competing at the NCAA Division I and II levels. Few universities can match the longstanding success that Millersville’s athletics programs have enjoyed. Since joining the PSAC, the Marauders have compiled 42 team PSAC Championships in 13 different sports. The fan base and student-support of the Marauders is unrivaled among its peers. Packed venues are common, especially in Pucillo Gymnasium during basketball season, when the “Pucillo Posse”—a rowdy cheering section—helps the teams to victory. The students support all sports at Millersville. In 2008, the men’s soccer program ranked 12th in the nation in home attendance. The spirit was no more evident than in late November when nearly 1,000 fans attended the team’s NCAA Tournament contest despite the freezing temperatures. Another key part of the tradition is Millersville’s mascots, the Marauder, and Skully. The Marauder’s origin dates back to the 1930s. He received a partner at Homecoming in 2004 in Skully. Skully has become a favorite among patrons with his eye patch, an earring, size 13 boots and enthusiasm for Millersville sports.
