It seems that the designation, to distinguish the movement from the activity of the Chovevei Zion, was first used by Matthias Acher (Birnbaum) in his paper “Selbstemancipation,” 1886 (see “Ost und West,” 1902, p. 576: Ahad ha – ‘Am, “Al Parashat Derakim,” p. 93, Berlin, 1903). Biblical Basis The idea of a return of the Jews to Palestine has its roots in many passages of Holy Writ. It is an integral part of the doctrine that deals with the Messianic time, as is seen in the constantly recurring expression, “shub shebut” or heshib shebut,” used both of Israel and of Judah (Jer. xxx, 7,1; Ezek. Xxxix. 24; Lam. Ii. 14; Hos. Vi. 11; Joel iv. 1 et al.). The Dispersion was deemed merely temporal: ‘The days come … that … I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof … and I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land” (Amos ix. -

You all go over like ninepins – one after the other. -- Mrs. Cheveley in Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband (1895) Morality is merely an interpretation of certain phenomena, more precisely a misinterpretation. – Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols (1889; pub. in English 1896) IN THE CLIMACTIC FINALE to the first act of Oscar Wilde’s 1895 play An Ideal Husband, Gertrude Chiltern convinces her husband, a Member of Parliament, not to support the construction of a boondoggle Argentinean canal. Gertrude, not her husband, is the ostensibly moral character here, since the canal’s only purpose is to create wealth for its stockholders, but the language she uses in this impassioned speech quotes Guinevere, the contrite fallen wife of Alfred Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. Near the end of the Idylls, recognizing that her infidelity has occasioned war, turmoil, and the end of Arthur’s reign, Guinevere laments: Ah my God, What might I not have made of thy fair world, Had I but loved thy highest creature here? It was my duty to have loved the highest: It surely was my profit had I known: It would have been my pleasure had I seen. We needs must love the highest when we see it (G 649-56)1 Repeating these words and ideas under drastically different circumstances, Lady Chiltern tells her husband in the finale to Wilde’s first act: “I don’t think you realise sufficiently, Robert, that you have brought into the political life of our time a nobler atmosphere, a finer attitude towards 1 life, a freer air of purer aims and higher ideals – I know it, and for that I love you, Robert. -

MATHILDE BLIND by Graham Handley The first titles in the Eminent Women Series published in 1883 by W. H. AlIen included stud ies of Emily Bronte and George Sand (Margaret Fuller, Maria Edgeworth, Elizabeth Fry, and Harriet Martineau would be in the next wave) as well as Mathilde Blind's pioneering, sensi tive, uneven and sympathetically feminist exposition of George Eliot's life and art. Blind her self deserves a full-length study, and at particular points her own life and works touch those of George Eliot. Born Mathilde Cohen in Mannheim in 1841, she took her stepfather's name when her mother remarried. Dr Karl Blind was an ardent republican in Baden, was imprisoned, freed, then exiled himself, first to Belgium then to England, the family settling in St John's Wood a couple of years after the European year of Revolutions in 1848. Richard Gamett, in the Memoir prefixed to the Poetical Works of Mathilde Blind (1900) refers to her unpublished autobiographical writings in which he notes her strong attachment to another girl at her school, her love of music and dancing (exemplified in her novel Tarantella, 1885) and her embracing of Christianity in her girlhood as 'this profoundly personal religion'. -

ROM the earliest ages mankind have been lovers of song and tale. To their singers in times of old men looked for comfort in sorrow, for inspiration in battle, and for renown after death. Of these singers were the prophets of Israel, the poets and rhapsodes of ancient Greece, the skalds of the Scandinavian sea-kings, and the bards of the Celtic race. The office was always most honour- able, the bard coming next the hero in esteem ; and thus, first of the fine arts, was cultivated the art of song. Down to quite a recent time the household of no Highland chief was complete without its bard, to sing the great deeds of the race's ancestors. And to the present day, though the locomotive and the printing press have done much to kill these customs of a more heroic age, it is not difficult to find in the Highland glens those who can still recite a " tale of the times of old." x INTRODUCTION. During the troubles of the Reformation in the sixteenth century, of the Civil Wars .and Revolu- tion in the seventeenth, and of the Parliamentary Union and Jacobite Rebellions in the early part of the eighteenth, the mind of Scotland was entirely engrossed with politics, and the Highlands them- selves were continually unsettled. -

It was as a poet that he desired to be known, and on his poetry his fame rests ; but of the nine volumes which comprise his work, verse fills only two. His plays (of which " Louison " alone, perhaps the least poetic of all, is in metre) fill two more volumes ; the rest is made up of short novels, tales, a few essays in criticism of literature, acting, and painting; and the famous " Confession of a Child of the Age." The history of his life is far from inspiriting. Heine, whom of all writers De Musset most resembles by his lyrical gift and his Ishmaelitish turn of mind, con- densed it into the cruel sentence, " He is a young man who has had a splendid past" But Heine summed up the verdict of criticism with a kindlier epigram, when he said of De Musset that " the Muse of " viii INTRODUCTION. Comedy kissed him on the lips, but the Muse of Tragedy on the heart." The second son of a high official under the first Empire, and descended from an old and good family, Alfred de Musset was born into society's inner circle. -
Publishing Swinburne; the Poet, His Publishers and Critics
UNIVERSITY OF READING Publishing Swinburne; the poet, his publishers and critics. Vol. 1: Text Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Language and Literature Clive Simmonds May 2013 1 Abstract This thesis examines the publishing history of Algernon Charles Swinburne during his lifetime (1837-1909). The first chapter presents a detailed narrative from his first book in 1860 to the mid 1870s: it includes the scandal of Poems and Ballads in 1866; his subsequent relations with the somewhat dubious John Camden Hotten; and then his search to find another publisher who was to be Andrew Chatto, with whom Swinburne published for the rest of his life. It is followed by a chapter which looks at the tidal wave of criticism generated by Poems and Ballads but which continued long after, and shows how Swinburne responded. The third and central chapter turns to consider the periodical press, important throughout his career not just for reviewing but also as a very significant medium for publishing poetry. Chapter 4 on marketing looks closely at the business of producing and of selling Swinburne’s output. Finally Chapter 5 deals with some aspects of his career after the move to Putney, and shows that while Theodore Watts, his friend and in effect his agent, was making conscious efforts to reshape the poet, some of Swinburne’s interests were moving with the tide of public taste; how this was demonstrated in particular by his volume of Selections and how his poetic oeuvre was finally consolidated in the Collected Edition at the end of his life. -

Abstract It is known that the oeuvre of Victorian aesthete Mathilde Blind (1841-1896) was influenced by evolutionary theory. Her epic poem The Ascent of Man (1889) most attests to this. However, critics have yet to examine in depth Blind’s cultural critique on Darwin’s view of gender relations through her evocation of a universal emotion, in part shaped by her esteem for a Shelleyan brand of Romantic radicalism. This article examines Blind’s exploration of sympathetic citizenship in relation to the debate on materialism that pervaded much of Victorian thouGht and the conflict between the bodily and the spiritual it laid bare. It does so through the analysis of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura and the notion of clinamen, and focuses on her poem The Ascent of Man. By exploring the notion of human sympathy, Blind offers the means for an alternative to the prevailinG conventions of the time.
