Photo Credit: Eva Fricke https://www.jamessuckling.com/wine-tasting-reports/rumors-true-rheingau-back/?mc_cid=065ca5ec32&mc_eid=2fe3133b20 1/98 4.8.2017 The Rumors Are True: The Rheingau is Back - JamesSuckling.com After scoring more than 50 Rheingau GGs from Germany’s 2015 vintage last fall, I suspected that winemakers were on to something to special. “This new vintage suggests that winemakers have seriously rethought and revamped grape growing and winemaking in the region,” I wrote. Well, last month I returned to the Rheingau to score nearly 400 wines from the 2015 and 2016 vintages and, indeed, the rumors are true. The Rheingau is finally back! But first, let’s revisit that brief history on where the Rheingau has been all these years. By far the most famous wine region on the river Rhine is the Rheingau. Its steepest slopes are rather stony, with slate type soils that retain little water, but most of the vineyards have relatively deep loamy soils that are fertile and water-retentive. This makes the wines bolder and broader than those of the Mosel. Its slopes have long been dominated by aristocratic estates, some of them complete with castles like that of Schloss Johannisberg and Schloss Vollards. And for two centuries from the 1776 vintage through to that of 1976, Rheingau wines were known for world premiere high-end riesling.

  • Of French Châteaux and German Castles
Of French Châteaux and German Castles Creation Wines Brand Ambassador Nkulu Mkhwanazi recently had the honour of representing his country at the La Revue du Vin de France World Tasting Championship in Burgundy. The event took place on 14 October at Château de Gilly in Burgundy and for Nkulu it was preceded by what he refers to as “an unforgettable 6-day trip” through France and Germany. Nkulu’s road to Burgundy started on 2 July this year when he finished fourth at the South African Wine Tasting Championship Finals in Cape Town and was selected as the reserved member for the South African team. Nkulu reflects on his journey: Day 1 – 9 October Team South Africa arrived in Paris with our tour guide, coach and translator Jean–Vincent Ridon. We spent the day visiting some of the major tourist attractions in Paris: the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Champs–Elysées – to mention but a few. Lunch along the Seine was accompanied by Champagne and a Cabernet Franc from Chinon. Dinner was a special affair at Philippe Faure-Brac’s Bistro du Sommelier. Philippe has an array of awards including being best Sommelier in the World in 1992. The bistro has become an institution in Paris and has been going strong for 27 years. We had a great dinner with Phillippe pouring some wines from his own collection which were poured blind, off course! The Championship was only a few days away … Day 2 – 10 October It had really sunk in that we were on a very special trip as we travelled to Champagne.

RieslingRangers 102 CLASSIC WINE CLASSIC WINE TRAVEL | LOCAL GOOD RIESLING CAN BE ELUSIVE BECAUSE IT DISLIKES HEAT WITH THE RESULT THAT FEW WARMER COUNTRIES TAKE THE TROUBLE. ALTHOUGH SOME DETERMINED ‘RIESLING RANGERS’ ARE FINDING COOL TERROIR AND CAN MAKE EXCELLENT RIESLING, THE CLASSICALLY AROMATIC, MOUTHWATERING STYLE WITH ITS RACY PURITY STILL COMES FROM GERMANY WHERE WINEMAKERS DO EVEN BETTER NOW, WHAT THEY ALREADY DID BEST, SAYS ELSIE PELLS. Refreshingly high in natural acidity, it will drink joyfully from birth to considerable old age without the crutch of oak or high alcohol, and makes wines through the sweetness spectrum with a precision that reflects the character of its origin. That said, it has been fighting for its rightful place in consumers’ hearts despite high praise by well-respected wine scribes. This could be a hangover from the characterless sweet wines that flooded the market after laws changed in 1971, or just an inability to decipher the labels. Many Riesling crosses exist of which Müller-Thurgau is perhaps best known and often the guilty party in mass-produced, bland Riesling pretenders. Several unrelated grapes also share the name, such as Welschriesling, Italian Riesling and previously Cape Riesling, unsuccessfully trying to reflect some nobility by implication and adding to consumer confusion. It is perfectly placed to fulfill the demand for easy drinkability, less wood and lower alcohol that I see among consumers and happily an awareness of the great value locked away in new-generation Rieslings is growing. It is at home in all regions of Germany, Bird’s eye iesling is my pick for the greatest notably the Mosel (5 400ha), Rheingau view of white variety in the world.

  • Schloss Vollrads, `Volratz` Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2018 Vollrads, Rheingau, Germany
Schloss Vollrads, `Volratz` Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2018 Vollrads, Rheingau, Germany PRODUCER Schloss Vollrads, with nearly 800 years of viticulture experience, is one of the oldest wine estates in the world. The vineyards are located in the heart of the Rheingau, where the quality of Riesling is unsurpassed by any other region in the world. In 1728, the world's first Kabinett was produced at Schloss Vollrads and, 300 years on, the estate is still going from strength to strength under the watchful eye of Rowald Hepp and his winemaker Ralph Herke. The estate now has 81 hectares of Riesling vineyards. VINEYARDS All Schloss Vollrads' vineyards are planted with Riesling and are situated between the Rhine and the forest-clad hills that protect the vines from the cool, northerly winds. Strict pruning ensures that yields are 40% lower than the legal requirement, while further reductions are made by crop thinning. The soil is a mixture of Taunus quartzite, argillaceous shale and calcareous loess soil. The vineyard slopes are all south facing, allowing them to capture the best sunshine. Forests on Taunus mountain range offer protection from the northern winds and create the ideal conditions for these vines. VINTAGE In the 2018 vintage, Rheingau winegrowers were challenged by the hot and dry summer. The drought led to some vineyards that partly needed to be irrigated. Due to the drought and the heat, the vineyards were prevented from any diseases resulting in remarkable volumes of healthy grapes of a high quality. VINIFICATION Fermentation was long and gentle, at low temperatures of 16-18° C in stainless-steel tanks with selected yeast strains for a period of two weeks.
