David Cameron MP Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A2AA Dear Prime Minister, As Members of Parliament for Staffordshire, we write to express our deep concern at the withdrawal of 3rd Battalion, the Mercian Regiment (The Staffards) from the Order of Battle. The Battalion has a proud history which can be traced back to its first raising at the King's Head Inn, Lichfield, in 1705. It served in Martinique, South Africa, Flanders, Gallipoli, Anzio and Arnhem. More recently, photographs of 3 Mercian fighting in Basra, became defining images of the Iraq campaign. We all recognise the difficult financial climate and the constraints that imposes on the Ministry of Defence. We understand that savings must be made. However, we also know that the decision to withdraw 3 Mercian will be distressing for all those currently serving, particularly those that might face redundancy, for their families and for those former Staffards who proudly recall their service. We know that it is the responsibility of the Mercian Regiment, as reorganised, to decide how best to reflect its history and antecedents. But as there is no longer any senior former Stafford serving on its staff, we hope that you will do all you can to encourage the Regiment to preserve and cherish the symbols, traditions and heritage of 3 Mercian within its ranks. 2 Mercian is known now as the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters as a result of previous amalgamations and we hope that a similar formula can be found to remember the Staffords.

    Parliamentary Voting and Constituencies Bill October 2010 This paper provides a background briefing on the Parliamentary Voting and Constituencies Bill, which was presented to the UK Parliament by the Rt. Hon Nick Clegg MP, the Deputy Prime Minister, on 22 July 2010. The Bill includes two key provisions which both directly apply to Wales. It aims to provide for a referendum on a choice between First Past the Post (FPTP) and the Alternative Vote (AV) as the system for electing the House of Commons, and change the electoral system for the Commons to the Alternative Vote if the result of the referendum supports this. The Bill also aims to provide for a reduction in the number of seats in the House of Commons from 650 to 600 and to introduce more equally sized constituencies. The National Assembly for Wales is the democratically elected body that represents the interests of Wales and its people, makes laws for Wales and holds the Welsh Government to account.     A guide to the Government for BIA members Correct as of 11 January 2018 On 8-9 January 2018, Prime Minister Theresa May conducted a ministerial reshuffle. This guide has been updated to reflect the changes. The Conservative government does not have a parliamentary majority of MPs but has a confidence and supply deal with the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). The DUP will support the government in key votes, such as on the Queen's Speech and Budgets, as well as Brexit and security matters, which are likely to dominate most of the current Parliament. This gives the government a working majority of 13. This is a briefing for BIA members on the new Government and key ministerial appointments for our sector.     Making a Hasty Brexit? Ministerial Turnover and Its Implications Jessica R. Adolino, Ph. D. By almost any measure, since the immediate aftermath of the June 16, 2016 Brexit referendum, the British government has been in a state of chaos. The turmoil began with then- Prime Minister David Cameron’s resignation on June 17 and succession by Theresa May within days of the vote. Subsequently, May’s decision to call a snap election in 2017 and the resulting loss of the Conservatives’ parliamentary majority cast doubt on her leadership and further stirred up dissension in her party’s ranks. Perhaps more telling, and the subject of this paper, is the unprecedented number of ministers1—from both senior and junior ranks—that quit the May government over Brexit-related policy disagreements2. Between June 12, 2017 and April 3, 2019, the government witnessed 45 resignations, with high-profile secretaries of state and departmental ministers stepping down to return to the backbenches. Of these, 34 members of her government, including 9 serving in the Cabinet, departed over issues with some aspect of Brexit, ranging from dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister’s Withdrawal Agreement, to disagreements about the proper role of Parliament, to questions about the legitimacy of the entire Brexit process. All told, Theresa May lost more ministers, and at a more rapid pace, than any other prime minister in modern times.

It’s hardly diverse. Would the country not be better off choosing, for instance, a Pakistani bus driver’s son? RS: I think you’re right to point to that. I would say by all means focus on the five years that I spent at school, but also look at the five years that I spent in Afghanistan, look at the five years that I spent serving my country in Iraq and in the Balkans, and let’s look at me overall. AM: So your biggest idea in terms of the great big Brexit conundrum facing the country is a citizens’ assembly. This would be chosen sort of randomly by poll. Just explain just exactly how it would work. RS: So two stages: first thing is to get parliament to try to get Brexit through. In the end we live in a parliamentary democracy so we have to begin by convening parliament, and if I’m lucky enough to be elected as leader I would come in with a mandate from the Conservative Party members, the associations of the country, and I could make a different request to Conservative members than the prime minister perhaps was able to in the past. And I would hope also the results of the European elections would make Members of Parliament realise that we need to get Brexit done and get that deal passed.
