The Ideals The Ideals of Camp Strawderman are to make girls so happy they will share their happiness with others. To make friendships which shall last through life. To develop strong, healthy bodies through regular exercise, good food, and rest in the pure mountain air. To create a love for God’s out-of- doors, and a reverence for his handiwork. To bring out the hidden possibilities which lie within each girl and to help her find herself.

Revised August 17, 2003 Camp Strawderman Spirit We represent the Ideals of Camp Strawderman. Ideals are necessary in any kind of life, For each of us needs a goal toward which she can strive.

Spirit of Strawderman Friendship (Frank Dempster Sherman) SCS’s We come into the Strawderman Circle It is my joy in life to find Tell me why the stars do shine; The circle Of Reverence and Friendship At every turning of the road tell me why there’s a lonesome pine The Circle of Happiness and Health The strong arms of a comrade kind Tell me why the sky’s so blue Let what we desire of the universe penetrate us To help me onward with my load. Tell me SCS’s why we all love you. Let loving Kindness and Unselfishness, And since I have no gold to give, Because God made the stars to shine Pass though us And love alone must make amends, Because God made the lonesome pine And Truth be the law of our mouth My only prayer is, while I live— Because God made the sky so blue Here is enkindled the fire God make me worthy of my friends. God made SCS’s, that’s why we love you which stands for the Spirit of Strawderman Pages Of logs it is made and from its embers Gratitude Pages we sing to you shall pass to us Ideals, which shall follow us I thank Thee just for life, We found you staunch and true through the adventure we call life. The chance to live, Let your shield be your guide To be alive! So great Thy gift To help you do what’s right at Strawderman. To this fire I bring the light of: If Thou dost nothing give Besides, it is enough Spirit of Strawderman Self-Reliance To breathe the air As we light our candles we share our dreams Camp Strawderman, To walk the mountain sod with each new flame new vision gleams Because of your firm faith, To feel the play of mighty winds And in the purifying light I shall keep the track. To look Thee in the face Our Spirits reach a fairer height Whose sharp set stones, And call Thee God. And in our hearts we breath a prayer My strength may almost spend. God, Bless our Campers everywhere. I could not meet your eyes, Reverence If I turned back, God Of the Hills Follow the Gleam So on my way I’ll wend. Grant me Thy strength to go back To the Knights in the days of ole, Into the cities without faltering: Keeping watch o’er the mountain height – Because of your strong love, Strength to do my daily task Cam a vision of Holy Graile, I’ll hold my path. Without tiring, and with entrhusiasm. And a voice through the waiting night When battered, torn, Strength to help my neighbor, And bleeding in the fight, Who has no hills to remember. Follow, follow, follow the gleam. How could I meet your true eyes, Banners unfurled, O’er all the world. Blazing wrath, God of the Stream Follow, follow, follow the gleam, If I keep not right? Grant me Thy peace and restfulness; Of the Chalice that is the Grail. Restfulness to carry to the tired Happiness One whom I shall meet every day. And we who would serve the King, Glad that I live am I Content to do small things with And loyally him obey. That the sky is blue With a freedom from littleness, In the consecrate silence know, Glad for the country lanes Self-control for the unexpected emergency That the challenge still holds today Ð And the fall of dew And patience for the wearisome task. After the sun, the rain Follow, follow, follow the gleam. After the rain, the sun God of the Stars Standards of worth, o’er all the earth this is the way of life May I take back the gift Follow, follow, follow the gleam, Till the work be done. Of friendship and love for all, Of the light that shall bring the dawn. All that we need to do Fill me with a great tenderness Be we low or high For the needy person at every turning, I Would Be True Is to see that we grow Grant that in all my perplextities and I would be true, Nearer the sky. Everyday decisions I may keep an open mind. for there are those who trust me; I would be pure, Health God of the Trails for there are those who care.;= As I grow I crave for myself With the pure winds from the northlands, I would be strong, The strength of the oak tree, Drive away my pettiness. For there is much to suffer; The grace and slenderness With the harsher winds of the winter I would be brave, Of the willow tree, Drive away my selfishness and hypocrisy. For there is much to dare. And may I be straight, Filll me with the breadth and depth I would be brave, Like the pine, And height of Thy wilderness. For there is much to dare. Cleaness of hands May I live out the truth I would be friend, And clearness of brain I crave Which Thou hast taught me To all the foe, the friendless; And purity of spirit, By every thought and word and deed. I would be giving, and forget the gift; As the mountain air is pure. I would be humble, May all these gifts be mine. For I know my weakness; I would look up, and laugh & love & live. I would look up, and laugh & love & live. EVERY DAY The Golden Day Is Dying Tell Me Why (Evening Colors) (Sunday Goodnight Circle) America (morning colors) The golden day is dying Tell me why the stars do shine? And if you work real hard and do your best, pass the means it too! That’s the sign that means to go slow. test Don’t look on it as a chore You’ll be a TenTen too! When did he first say UG? Post! Bill Frankie and Johnny Medley Songs I used to dream that I would discover Frankie and Johnny were lovers. 1. While strolling through the park one day... The perfect lover, someday. Oh, Lawdy, how they could love! In the merry, merry month of May... I knew I’d recognize him. They swore to be true to each other. I was taken by surprise, by a pair of roguish eyes... If ever he came ‘round my way. Just as true as the stars above. In a moment my poor heart was stole away. I always used to fancy then, He’d be one of the god-like kind of men. (chorus) 2. By the light, of the silvery moon, I want to With a giant brain, and noble head. He was her man, but he has done her wrong. spoon, Like the heroes bold in the books I read; To my honey I’ll croon love’s tune... But along came Bill, who’s not that type at all, Johnny said “I’ve got to go now. Honey moon, keep a’shinin’ in June... You’d meet him on the street and never notice him! I won’t be very long. Your silvery beams will bring love’s dreams, His form and face, His manly grace, So don’t you wait up for me my honey. We’ll be cuddlin’ soon, by the silvery moon! Is not the kind that you would find in a statue. Nor worry while I’m gone.” And I can’t explain, It’s surely not his brain. (Chorus) 3. Casey would waltz with the strawberry blonde That makes me thrill, I love him! And the band played on... Because ... he’s wonderful! Ain’t gonna tell you no story He’d glide cross the floor with the girl he adored Because he’s just my Bill! Ain’t gonna tell you no lie, And the band played on... But your Johnny went by an hour ago But his brain was so loaded it nearly exploded He can’t play golf, or tennis or polo, With a girl nemed Nellie Blye. The poor girl would shake with alarm Or sing a solo, or row. (Chorus) He’d ne’er leave the girl with the strawberry curl He is not half as handsome And the band played on... as dozens of men that I know. Frankie went home in a hurry. He isn’t tall and straight and slim, She didn’t go there for fun. 4. Daisy, Daisy give me your answer do; And he dresses far worse than Ted or Jim. She hurried home to get I’m half crazy all for the love of you... Oh, I can’t explain why he should be just the one, A hold of her Johnny’s gun. It won’t be a stylish marriage One man in the world for me; He’s just my Bill, (Chorus) I can’t afford a carriage... An ordinary boy, He hasn’t got a thing But you’ll look sweet upon the seat that I can brag about; Johnny saw Frankie a comin’. Of a bicycle built for two. And yet to be upon his knee, so comfy & roomy Out the back door he did scoot. seems natural to me Oh, I can’t explain, But Frankie took aim with her pistol, 5. In the shade of the old apple tree, It’s surely not his brain, that makes me thrill And the gun went root a toot toot. Where the love in your eyes I could see... I love him - Because he’s....I don’t know, (Chorus) And the voice that I heard... Because he’s just my Bill! Like the song of a bird, Sherriff arrested poor Frankie Seemed to whisper sweet music to me, Cant’ Help Loving dat Man (Queenie) Took her to jail the same day. I could hear the dull buzz of the beeezzzzz Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly He locked her up in a dungeon cell In the blossoms as you said to me....
