(Acari: Prostigmata: Eupodoidea) KATARZYNA JESIONOWSKA Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Limnology, University of Szczecin, Wąska 13, 71-415 Szczecin, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. In this paper, a new family Cocceupodidae, and three genera, Cocceupodes, Filieupodes gen. n. and Linopodes, are diagnosed. An identification key separating the genera and sixteen species is presented. Two new species, Filieupodes filiformis and F. filistellatus, collected in Poland, are described and illustrated. Key words: acarology, taxonomy, new family, new taxa, morphology, Poland. InTroDUCTIon Mites regarded as belonging to the genus Cocceupodes THOR, 1934 are most frequently observed in different soil habitats, just after representatives from genus Eupodes KOCH, 1835. Together they are classified within the family EupodidaeK OCH, 1842 which has been poorly studied and includes species of a very diversified features. So far eight families have been distinguished in a common superfamily Eupodoidea BANKS, 1894 (KOCH 1842, according to QIN 1996). The following families have been listed, viz., Eupodidae KOCH, Penthaleidae OUDEMANS, 1931, Penthalodidae THOR, 1933, rhagidiidae OUDEMANS, 1922, Strandtmannidae ZACHARDA, 1979, Eriorhynchidae QIN et HALLIDAY, 1997, Pentapalpidae OLIVIER et THERON, 2000 and Dendrochaetidae OLIVIER, 2008. The diversity of the Eupodidae, Penthaleidae and Penthalodidae is extraordinary, while the rhagidiidae, Strandtmaniidae and Pentapalpidae are homogeneous as well as the Eriorhynchidae with one genus and five species. Strandtmaniidae, Pentapalpidae and Dendrochaetidae have been distinguished based on one species. The key to the families of the superfamily Eupodoidea can be found in the works of ZACHARDA (1979), 638 KatarZynA JESIonoWSKA QIN & HALLIDAY (1997) and OLIVIER (2008). -

Easily one of the most neglected but powerfully galvanizing forces shaping history in the world today is the prophecy of Gog and Magog from the 38th and 39th chapters of the book of Ezekiel. This prophecy from the Jewish-Christian Bible has molded geo-politics, not only with- in the United States and the West but also, to an amazing degree, in the Muslim world as well. It seems that, millennia ago, Ezekiel’s vision actually named the nation which millions today believe plays the major role in this prophecy: the nation of Russia. Many modern scholars have dismissed Ezekiel’s Gog and Magog prophecy as a mystical apocalypse written to vindicate the ancient claims of a minor country’s deity. The very notion of such a prediction—that semi-mythical and unrelated nations that dwelt on the fringes of Israel’s geographical consciousness 2,500 years ago would, “in the latter days,” suddenly coalesce into a tidal wave of opposition to a newly regathered state of Jews—seems utterly incredible to a modern mentality. Such a scenario, the experts say, belongs only to the fundamentalist “pop religion” of The Late, Great Planet Earth and of TV evangelists. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The morphology of representative species of the genus Penthalodes is reviewed. A new generic diagnosis and an identification key for adults of Penthalodes species is provided. Previous descriptions of Penthalodes ovalis from Alaska and Hawaii are considered as different species and named as P. alaskaensis (Strandtmann) sp. n. and P. hawaiiensis (Strandtman & Goff) sp. n., respectively. Penthalodes polonicus sp. n. is described and illustrated based on material collected in Poland. Key words: taxonomy, identification key, morphological review, morphological description Introduction The genus Penthalodes Murray, 1877 has as its type species Megamerus ovalis Dugés, 1834, collected from an unknown European locality. Subsequent to Dugés description Koch (1838) described the same species as Penthaleus ovatus. Murray (1877) transferred the type species into the section Eupodidae, instead of the Trombidiidae, where Dugés placed it. Moreover, due to the lack of a line which separates the "thorax" and "abdomen", he stated that it cannot be placed in the genus Penthaleus (referring to Koch’s description), but in a new genus Penthalodes. He also formulated a new name for the species, Penthalodes ovalis. Thor and Willmann’s (1941) monograph on the Prostigmata provided the first review of Penthalodes. -

Abbott, the well-known explorer, reluctantly gave up his exploration in eastern Asia, on account of ill-health, he made arrangements with the Smithsonian Institution to have this vrork continued, H. C. Raven was selected to carry out his plans and started operations in northeast Borneo in 1912. After making a good collection there and becoming familiar with the Malay language and the handling of natives, he purchased a small sailing vessel and with a crew of natives sailed from Samarinda, Borneo, to Paloe Bay, Celebes, where he arrived on July 16, 1914, working northward along the west coast of the northern peninsula as far as Kwandang. He then retraced his course as far as Kampa, re- turned to Borneo, February 28, 1915, and came home to the United States for a well-merited vacation. On this trip Mr. Raven did not penetrate far inland and while he made a large collection of birds, it contained no novelties. He obtained material at the following localities on this voyage Dampelas. Toli Toli. Kapas Bay. Kampa. Kwala Besar. Tandjong Penjoe. Boesak. Tandjong Tango. Paleleh. Soemalata. Paleleh River. Kwandang. Mr. R'aven next returned to Celebes and began work in the ex- treme northern tip at Likoepang, January 13, 1916. While in the north he collected birds at the following localities Likoepang. Goenoeng Kalabat.^ " » Mr. Raven has furnished the following note on this mountain : My camp was at about 1,700 meters (5,600 feet), where the forest is only semitropical in appearance. -

Practically considered, though, every item on the list can be quickly accessed in the Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary (RHU), updated second edition of 2007, or in its CD – ROM WordGenius® version. So what’s here is actually an in-depth learning tool for mastering the basic vocabularies of what today can fairly be called American-Pronunciation Internationalist High Tech Latinate English. Dictionary authority. This list, by virtue of its dictionary link, has far more authority than a conventional professional-subject glossary, even the one offered online by the University of Maryland Medical Center. American dictionaries, after all, have always assigned their technical terms to professional experts in specific fields, identified those experts in print, and in effect held them responsible for the accuracy and comprehensiveness of each entry. Even more important, the entries themselves offer learners a complete sketch of each target word (headword). Memorization. For professionals, memorization is a basic career requirement. Any physician will tell you how much of it is called for in medical school and how hard it is, thanks to thousands of strange, exotic shapes like <myocardium> that have to be taken apart in the mind and reassembled like pieces of an unpronounceable jigsaw puzzle. -

M. Dugger, Christian A. Hagen Understanding the effects of habitat disturbance on a species’ habitat selection patterns, and demographic rates, is essential to projecting the trajectories of populations affected by disturbance, as well as for determining the appropriate conservation actions needed to maintain those populations. Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a species of conservation concern in western North America. The distribution of the species has been reduced by approximately half since European settlement, with concurrent and continuing population declines across its occupied range. The primary threats to the species are habitat alteration and loss, caused by multiple factors. In the western portion of its distribution, increasing wildfire activity is a primary cause of habitat loss and degradation. Single wildfires in this area may now reach extremely large sizes (>100,000 ha), and wildfires have been linked to local population declines. However, no published studies, to date, have examined the immediate effects of large-scale wildfire on sage-grouse habitat selection and demographic rates, using modern telemetry methods. I studied the habitat selection patterns, nest success, and survival of adult, and yearling female sage-grouse, captured within or near the Holloway fire, using state- of-the-art GPS-PTT telemetry methods. The Holloway fire burned ~187,000 ha of highly productive sage-grouse habitat in August, 2012. My study began during the first spring post-fire (March, 2013), and continued through February, 2015. -
