Highlights of Niagara Falls & Ottawa Tulip Festival May 10Th to 18Th Highlights of Niagara Falls & Ottawa Tulip Festival May 10th to 18th, 2018 8 nights and 9 days Summary Itinerary Thursday, May 10th Quebec City Morning/Afternoon Meet your Driver and Tour Director from Target Tours and depart on your Highlights of Niagara Falls & Ottawa Tour. The bus leaves the Wal-Mart parking lot in Charlottetown at 6:00 am with pickup in Borden, Aulac, Salisbury, Lincoln, and Woodstock. Transfers are provided from Dartmouth, Truro, and Saint John. Your Tour Director will make the trip pass with on-board entertainment and games. Evening Tonight, enjoy an included group dinner at Baton Rouge. Following dinner, arrive at the Courtyard by Marriott Quebec City. The rest of the evening is free. Friday, May 11th 1000 Islands Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet with your Tour Director. We check out and travel to the 1000 Islands. Stop for rest breaks and lunch along the way. Afternoon Arrive at your host hotel, the Holiday Inn Express Gananoque, 1000 Islands. Enjoy free time to explore before departing for a 30-minute transfer to Kingston to relax on your 1000 Islands Dinner Cruise departing at 6:30 pm. The Sunset Dinner Cruise is the premiere dining experience in the 1000 Islands. Enjoy a four-course meal on the Island Star, and enjoy live entertainment, all on a spectacular sunset cruise. Saturday, May 12th Niagara Falls Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet your Tour Director. Check out and depart for Niagara Falls. Before arriving in Niagara Falls we will make a stop at the St. Jacob’s Farmers’ Market. Every week, hundreds of vendors bring you Ontario's farm-fresh foods, crafts, imported goods and most things imaginable, plus amazing ready-to-eat foods, all in a variety of buildings and outdoors too. Bring your appetite! Afternoon/Evening This evening we will arrive in Niagara Falls. Check in to our host hotel the Courtyard by Marriott Niagara Falls. Remainder of the day and evening is at your leisure. Enjoy the many attractions in the Clifton Hill area. Sunday, May 13th Niagara Falls Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet your Tour Director. This morning we take part in a Journey Behind the Falls as well as a Hornblower Cruise to the base of the Falls. You may get a little wet! Afternoon Your afternoon is free to explore Clifton Hill. Enjoy the many attractions and take a ride on the Niagara Skywheel (not included) for a view of the falls. Evening Join us for a group dinner at the Skylon Tower (included). Here you will enjoy your meal 775 feet above the falls, an unforgettable experience. This also includes your “Ride-To-The-Top” of the tower and the indoor/outdoor observation decks. The rest of the evening is free to explore. Monday, May 14th Niagara-on-the-Lake Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet your Tour Director. This morning we will depart for Niagara-on-the-Lake where you will have free time to explore. This area is filled with quaint shops and boutiques and is best explored at your leisure. This town can only be described as “charming”. Have lunch (not included) in a local restaurant. Afternoon Visit Château des Charmes for a Wine Growing 101 lesson including a tasting. This winery was founded in 1978 by Paul Bosc, a fifth-generation French winegrower. Paul and his young family arrived in Niagara in the 1960’s with the idea that growing our own grapes was the best way to make fine wine. Evening This evening, experience a buffet dinner along with the mystery and art of illusion show with Greg Frewin, one of the most decorated magicians in the world. Join us for the evening performance of our Las Vegas Style Magical Revue featuring spectacular appearances by our rare and majestic tigers. Your imagination will be captivated and you will be amazed beyond belief. Tuesday, May 15th Ottawa Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet your Tour Director. Check out of hotel and depart for Ottawa, ON. Afternoon Arrive at our host hotel the Courtyard by Marriott Ottawa East in the early afternoon. This is perfect time of year to visit our Capital city. We will check in to our hotel. Once settled, your Tour Director will arrange transfers to the downtown to visit attractions such as Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, the ByWard Market, and the famous tulip beds. Evening Join us for a group dinner at Tucker’s Marketplace (included). This fantastic buffet style restaurant will be sure to have something for everyone. The rest of your evening is free to explore. Wednesday, May 16th Ottawa Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet with your Tour Director. We meet our Step-On guide for a morning tour of Ottawa. Learn about the Parliament Buildings, 24 Sussex Drive, Rideau Hall and more. If time and traffic allows we will drive by the beautiful tulip beds in bloom. Afternoon Free afternoon to explore downtown Ottawa and have lunch (not included) in ByWard Market. Visit one of the many museums and shop your time away on historic Sparks Street or at the Rideau Centre. Evening You’re free to explore the area and have dinner at one of the many local restaurants in downtown Ottawa. The city is your oyster! Thursday, May 17th Quebec City Morning Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet with your Tour Director. This morning we check out and depart for Quebec City. We stop for rest breaks and lunch along the way. Afternoon This afternoon, we check in to the Courtyard by Marriott Quebec City at approximately 2:00 pm. Once settled, we will transfer you to Old Quebec for free time to explore the shops and stroll the cobblestone streets. Evening Have dinner at a local restaurant in Old Quebec. A shuttle will transfer the group back to the hotel and to Les Galleries de la Capitale for optional shopping near the hotel. Friday, May 18th Home Morning Enjoy complimentary breakfast and meet with your Tour Director. Check out and make our way home. We stop for lunch and rest breaks along the way. In addition to celebrating 15 years since the first WTS in Ottawa in 2002, it was also the 65th anniversary of the Ottawa Tulip festival, and 150 years since the founding of the Dominion of Canada. There has been some confusion as to the year of the first Summit. Although we refer to the first as being in 2002 in Ottawa, there was an ‘unofficial’ summit the previous year in Tonami, Japan. It was there that it was decided to invite a number of countries to participate the following year in Ottawa. This Tonami meeting is now known as ‘The Inspirational Summit’. The second Summit was in Canberra, Australia 2006, 3rd in Spalding 2008, 4th Skagit Valley, USA in 2010, 5th in Istanbul, Turkey in 2013, and the 6th in Suncheon City, South Korea, 2015 Initially, having received the invitation to attend, David, Peter and myself agreed we would not send a delegate as SHS couldn’t justify the cost of airfare, hotel and registration fees. Having explained this to Michel Gauthier, the Chairman of the WTS, he understood our situation, but he was very keen to have us attend. In order to help, the delegate fees could be waived, and the organisers would pay one return airfare, if we covered hotel costs. After consultation with Trustees, we decided I would attend alone.

Combining elements of ethnic pride, nostalgia, sentimentality, cultural memory, religous values, political positions, economic motive, and the spirit of celebration, these festivals are well-organized performances that promote a community’s special identity and heritage. At the same time, these festivals usually reach out to the larger community in an attempt to place the ethnic community within the American fabric. These festivals have a complex history tied to the “melting pot” history of America. Since the twentieth century many communities and ethnic groups have struggled to hold onto or reclaim a past that gradually slips away. Ethnic heritage festivals are one prevalent way to maintain this receding past. And yet such ii festivals can serve radically different aims, socially and politically. In this dissertation I will investigate how these festivals are presented and why they are significant for both participants and spectators. I wish to determine what such festivals do and mean. I will examine five Dutch American festivals, three of which are among the oldest ethnic heritage festivals in the United States.

Public planting ceremony to take place “We feel very fortunate,” said Councillor Brad Beatty, Chair of Communities in Bloom, and Mike Matthews, President of Stratford District Horticultural Society“, to have received one of these Gardens as we understand that the Canadian Garden Council, the organization behind the Friendship Tulip Garden program, received more than 400 applications. The garden, consisting of 700 red and white tulip bulbs, generously donated by Vesey’s Bulbs of PEI, will be planted on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dutch Memorial Garden. Veterans, school children and the public are invited to attend the planting ceremony where the story of the Dutch princess born in Ottawa during WWII and the history of the enduring friendship bond between Canada and the Netherlands will be retold so that it may live on for future generations.
