The linguistic analysis is guided by the use of critical discourse analysis. For the purpose of this study, three different ​ types of articles/video and the corresponding comments are analyzed. Two of the articles/video that I will analyze are from unreliable media sources, and one of the articles is from a credible ​ ​ media source. Walton 2018 1 Abstract Recent studies by the Southern Poverty Law Center have noted a rise in organized anti-Muslim activism over the last three years. A number of these organized, violent mobilizations have occurred in nonmetropolitan areas. This is partially due to the fact that meatpacking facilities are increasingly located in small cities or rural areas in the Midwest or Great Plains and recruit Muslim African immigrant and refugee workers. This has resulted in a secondary migration of Muslims, particularly Somalis, to smaller meatpacking communities in the Midwest or Great Plains, creating new contexts for ethnic conflict. To date, rural hate groups, specifically these emergent anti-Muslim mobilizations, are not well understood. I seek to determine the justifications and mobilization strategies used in these anti-Muslim mobilizations. I undertake a case study of an anti-Muslim hate group in a small Great Plains community. My core research questions are: 1) How does this group justify their anti-Muslim activism?; and 2) What elements of the group's rhetoric seem to resonate with the local community? I utilize a social movements perspective to analyze transcripts from the hate group's public meetings, a public town hall meeting with a local refugee resettlement agency, and the content of the hate group's public Facebook page (454 group posts; 1,370 individual comments).

It’s known primarily for its five-minute videos. In 2016, viewers began to notice that certain PragerU videos were no longer available. YouTube had placed them on its “restricted” list, which prevents the videos from playing on computers using content filters to screen out violence and pornography. PragerU assumed this was simply a case of “bad algorithms.” But YouTube said no—each “restricted” video had been reviewed by a walking, talking human. The list included such diverse titles as “Are the Police Racist?” by Heather Mac Donald, “Israel’s Legal Founding” by Alan Dershowitz, and even a video on the Ten Commandments by Dennis Prager.     YouTube Chatter: Understanding Online Comments Discourse on Misinformative and Political YouTube Videos 1 1 2 3 Aarash Heydari ,​ Janny Zhang ,​ Shaan Appel ,​ and Xinyi Wu ​ ​ ​ ​ Professor Gireeja Ranade Abstract We conduct a preliminary analysis of comments on political YouTube content containing misinformation in comparison to comments on trustworthy or apolitical videos, labelling the bias and factual ratings of our channels according to Media Bias Fact Check where applicable. One of our most interesting discoveries is that especially-polarized or misinformative political channels (Left-Bias, Right-Bias, PragerU, Conspiracy-Pseudoscience, and Questionable Source) generate 7.5x more comments per view and 10.42x more replies per view than apolitical or Pro-Science channels; in particular, Conspiracy-Pseudoscience and Questionable Sources generate 8.3x more comments per view and 11.0x more replies per view than apolitical and Pro-Science channels. We also compared average thread lengths, average comment lengths, and profanity rates across channels, and present simple machine learning classifiers for predicting the bias category of a video based on these statistics. Motivation Many social media platforms have recently seen an increase in the spread of misinformation, defined as information which is misleading or factually incorrect. This spread was well documented in the wake of the 2016 US presidential election, and has colloquially been labelled as the spread of “fake news.” Inflammatory articles and stories often incorporate video content, and their comment sections provide an approximate measure of how people react to a given story. Despite this, comment threads on YouTube videos have not been studied in the context of fake news as much as on other social media platforms such as Facebook and Reddit, likely since YouTube emphasizes hosting videos whereas websites like Reddit focus on encouraging discourse.
