Comerica Bank Challenger 2010 “Behindthe Sceneswith Star Stringing”
COMERICA BANK CHALLENGER 2010 “BEHINDTHE SCENESWITH STAR STRINGING” Article by Leslie López bought the Seascape Club, and established the Aptos f you want to understand tennis better, want an inside view of Challenger, now the longest-running Challenger event in the Ithe Aptos Comerica Bank Challenger Tournament at the country. And Mindell has been stringing here every year since Seascape Sports Club, and like to laugh, pay a visit to the 1994, after Rick Kepler, USTPA player and Seascape Club’s stringing room, and have a word with David Mindell. He and Tennis Director, “stuck his nose in the stringing trailer down in his colleague Doug Denton, both of Star Stringing, based in Palm Springs, work to keep both tournament competitors and club members in top form throughout the week they are here. But like the players, they are full-time pros, and this week is one among many for them: they work the tournament circuit, taking care of the stars’ racquets, and everyone else’s in between. Mindell takes his work seriously, and is never at a loss for words about it. “This is truly a gladiatorial sport,” he says, “and we are the ones who get the chance to fine-tune the instruments of that sport so people can do better when they’re out there.” References to combat aside (or perhaps in full view of how tense professional tennis can be) Mindell also works at keeping people happy. While his hands move steadily through the racquets each day—a total of about 200-300 during an average Aptos Challenger, including about 70-80 from an expanding local clientele of Seascape Club members—he keeps up a running dialogue with anyone who wanders into his shop. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 16, 2015 FORMER WORLD NO. 8 JANKO TIPSAREVIC ADDED TO ODLUM BROWN VANOPEN MEN’S DRAW Vancouver, BC - Organizers of the Odlum Brown VanOpen are pleased to announce former World No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic has been granted a wildcard entry into the main draw of the men’s competition August 15 - 23 at Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver. The 31-year-old from Serbia spent 2014 recovering from a foot injury and is looking to get back to the form which made him a US Open quarterfinalist in 2011 and 2012. He also made it to the fourth round of singles at Wimbledon in 2007 and 2008, the French Open in 2012, and the Australian Open in 2013. “We are really excited to add a player of Janko’s stature to the men’s draw at this year’s tournament,” said Odlum Brown VanOpen Chairman Floyd Hill. “Anytime you can attract a player who’s been among the top 10 in the world and defeated the calibre of players that Janko has, it strengthens the event significantly and gives fans the opportunity to see another world-class player here in Vancouver.” The players that Tipsarevic holds victories over reads like a who’s-who in men’s tennis. News Release 11 November 2018 DJOKOVIC PRESENTED YEAR-END ATP WORLD TOUR NO. 1 TROPHY AT 2018 NITTO ATP FINALS LONDON — Novak Djokovic was today presented with the 2018 year-end ATP World Tour No. 1 trophy during an on-court presentation at the Nitto ATP Finals, the season finale at The O2 in London. The Serbian is one of only four players in ATP Rankings history (since 1973) to have clinched the year-end top spot on five (or more) occasions, joining Pete Sampras (six), Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer (both five times). Djokovic, who replaced Spain’s Rafael Nadal at No. 1 on 5 November, has completed a remarkable comeback to top form in 2018, capturing four titles—including two Grand Slams and two ATP World Tour Masters 1000s – from six tour-level finals. Aged 31 and six months, Djokovic is the oldest player to finish year-end No. 1 in ATP Rankings history. Having previously finished at the top in 2011-12, 2014-15, he is the second player — after Nadal (2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017) — with three stints as year-end No. 1. He is also the first player to be ranked outside the Top 20 and finish the same season at No. 1 in the history of the ATP Rankings. Russia’s Marat Safin was as low at No. 38 on 28 February 2000 before becoming No. 1 on 20 November that year, but he did not finish the season at No. 1. When Djokovic fell to No. 22 on 21 May 2018, it was his lowest ranking since he was No. -
