Companion planting is a technique that has been used for centuries by farmers, growers and gardeners. In fact, I suspect that we are at the lowest ebb of its use but times are about to change. The reason for this is complex but the desire for many gardeners to use as few chemicals as possible has meant that other techniques for the control of pests and diseases are being used more often.

Companion planting is the putting together of plants or crops that either confer a benefit upon each other or where one provides a boost to the other. The types that most gardeners are aware of include the use of Marigolds or Tagetes among tomatoes usually in the greenhouse. Either the whitefly are confused by the smell of the Marigolds and don’t realise that the tomatoes are there or that they don’t like the smell and head off somewhere else.

During his last visit, The Prince went on a tour around the new North East Quadrant, speaking to key figures involved with its Edevelopment and assessing the progress for himself. The Prince famously visits Poundbury at least twice a year to attend a mixture of public and private engagements and is regularly kept up to date with the development’s progress. Visits have been taking place for more than 23 years – back to when the land was simply a Duchy farm on the edge of Dorchester. In November The Prince opened an extension of House of Dorchester chocolate factory where he was taken on a tour to meet members of staff and see how the production takes place there each day. Chairman of House of Dorchester, Galvin Weston said: “It was a great honour to meet the Prince of Wales and for him to see how House of Dorchester has expanded in Poundbury. It was nice to see him focus on the people and staff who have been here a long time. A great day for all of us.” The Prince also visited Queen Mother Square to see the building progress taking place. While there, The Prince spoke to builders and went up to the top of the Royal Pavilion building with Duchy officials and contractor Philip Fry to inspect plans. The Prince of Wales always attracts a crowd and often takes time to stop and talk to residents and visitors.
