Serving Gupta-Vrindavan : Devotional Service in the Physical Place And
chapter 5 Serving Gupta-Vrindavan : Devotional Service in the Physical Place and the Workings of the “International Society” introduction: Serving the place Fieldwork in Mayapur was completely different from fieldwork in Navadvip. The people, the place, the kind of devotion—everything was starkly dissimilar. In a series, along the main road which cuts across the small vil- lage of Mayapur, with stretches of agricultural fields on the other side, are large, sanitized temples and guest-houses built by Gaudiya Math. Like Navadvip’s sahajiyas, Mayapur’s villagers are poor and primarily live by farming. In sharp contrast to Mayapur’s rural background, however, the main attraction for pilgrims and my primary fieldwork site is 500 acres of enclosed land and a walled compound with the most modern, up-to-date facilities, unprecedented in any Indian village, within which approximately 500 Indian and foreign ISKCON devotees reside and worship. ISKCON devotees are mostly foreigners and pro- fessional, affluent, English-speaking middle-class or rich Indians, who offer financial patronage to ISKCON through unstinting donations and publicize the institution to their families and friends. Mayapur has one of the largest concentrations of foreign devotees in India. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was founded in New York in 1966 by A. C. Bhaktivedanta, known among devotees as Prabhupad (god’s servant), an English-educated man from Calcutta who became initiated into Vaishnavism and in his 150 Serving Gupta-Vrindavan | 151 later life preached Vaishnavism in the West to fulfill his guru’s wish of spreading “Krishna Consciousness” internationally. Over the decades ISKCON has established over 400 centers internationally, including temples, schools, and vegetarian restaurants. -

London's Wealthy Explore the Culture of Lakshmi with His Holiness
London’s Wealthy explore the Culture of Lakshmi with His Holiness Radhanath Swami and Mr Alfred Ford. Over a centum of London’s wealthy gathered for an exclusive Executive Event at the ornate Grand Room in St James’s, London. Organised to mark the forthcoming festival of Diwali, over 120 High Net Worth individuals congregated to hear discourses on the ‘Culture of Wealth’ and explore financial lessons from the festival epic. Sita, the embodiment of the goddess of fortune plays a pivotal role within the epic to illustrate the polar opposites of wealth depending on her treatment and culture by others. In the association of Lord Rama, the goddess liberated all and when mistreated by King Ravana, she caused total destruction. In a world of duality, the yin-yang of wealth or seemingly contrary forces is sometimes difficult to separate and identify; they seem interconnected and interdependent. The monumental epic of the Ramayana ushering in the festival of Diwali, carefully details the ethics and morals in dealing with wealth correctly, both for the immediate and wider benefit. Subject matter experts both from the tradition and corporate sponsor, HSBC, ornamented the theme with par-excellent speeches. Renowned for his global corporate and executive mentoring, His Holiness Radhanath Swami, a subject matter expert from the tradition delivered the central keynote speech. The great- grandson of legendary Henry Ford, Mr Alfred Bush Ford graced the event as chief guest to provide the closing speech on the topic both from his celebrated ancestry and himself. The retired private secretary of Her Majesty the Queen of England, the right honourable Lord Janvrin presented the corporate keynote speech in his current capacity as Deputy Chairman of HSBC Private Bank UK. -

UNIVErSITY OF CALIFOrNIA LOS ANGELES Moving Toward Utopia Language, Empathy, and Chastity among Mobile Mothers and Children in Mayapur, West Bengal A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology by Teruko Vida Mitsuhara 2019 © Copyright by Teruko Vida Mitsuhara 2019 ABSTrACT OF THE DISSErTATION Moving Toward Utopia Language, Empathy, and Chastity among Mobile Mothers and Children in Mayapur, West Bengal by Teruko Vida Mitsuhara Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Elinor Ochs, Chair This dissertation examines the utopian impulse as a historical concept that informs twenty-first cen- tury religious migration and community formations in opposition to late-capitalist modernity. It foregrounds the understandings and experiences of women and their children in Mayapur, a transna- tional village comprised of devotees of Krishna in West Bengal, India. Based on eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork, this study offers linguistic anthropological insights into the motivations for why women choose to leave Western and other “liberal” contexts in favor of fundamentalist religious spaces. Through close analysis of everyday interactions in multilingual children’s peer-groups itshows the affordances that growing up in such a utopian community has for the development of “linguistic empathy” across racial and linguistic boundaries, as well as the reflexive understandings of religious and cultural concepts that children acquire, debate, and transform. Beginning with the history of utopia in sixteenth-century Europe to its exportation to India in the nineteenth century, this study identifies ways in which utopian thought shapes the creation of Mayapur. “Utopia” was invented by English saint and satirist Sir Thomas More in 1516 as a double entendre meaning “non-place” as well as “place of happiness.” More did not intend his satirical novel ii to become a blueprint for actual alternative world-making projects. -
PRABHUPĀDA Bevezetés Ő Isteni Kegyelme A.C
PRABHUPĀDA Bevezetés Ő Isteni Kegyelme A.C. Mielőtt Amerikába hajózott volna, egyetlen egyszer sem hagyta el Indiát, míg a következő tizenkét évben a Kṛṣṇa-tudat mozgalmát hirdetve számtalanszor körbejárta a világot.
