WHEREAS, Richard Lamm, a state legislator, three-term Governor, and passionate Coloradan, left a lasting and historic legacy on his beloved state of Colorado; and WHEREAS, Governor Lamm’s life is a tapestry of service, starting in the armed forces and ending in the Colorado State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Governor Lamm was a trailblazer, taking on every challenge Colorado faced, always with the wellbeing of Coloradans at the forefront of his mind; and WHEREAS, he will be remembered by many for his passion for and dedication to environmentalism, sparked by his successful and unprecedented effort to block the 1976 Winter Olympic Games; and WHEREAS, Governor Lamm fought tirelessly to protect Colorado’s economy, environment and citizens from the negative impacts he believed the games would leave on Denver, facing stiff opposition from the business community he stood resolute on behalf of what he believed; and WHEREAS, this effort not only gained Governor Lamm national political notoriety, but solidified his reputation to cross party lines and create strong bipartisan coalitions to do what was best of the state; and WHEREAS, in 1967, then Representative Lamm championed legislation paving the way for legal women's reproductive rights in Colorado, 6 years preceding the Supreme Court decision on Roe V Wade. The "progressive profile" as developed in the Mowry-Chandler-Hofstadter thesis characterizes the progressive as one who possessed distinctive social, economic, and political qualities that distinguished him from the non-progressive. In 1965 in a political history seminar at Central Missouri State College, Warrensburg, Missouri, I tested the above model by using a single United States House representative from the state of Missouri. When I came to the Oklahoma State University in 1967, I decided to expand my test of this model by examining the thirteen representatives from Oklahoma during the years 1901 through 1917. In testing the thesis for Oklahoma, I investigated the social, economic, and political characteristics of the members whom Oklahoma sent to the United States House of Representatives during those years, and scrutinized the role they played in the formulation of domestic policy. In addition, a geographical analysis of the various Congressional districts suggested the effects the characteristics of the constituents might have on the representatives. -

Journalists, authors, politicians, and historians have used this offi cial reference for a variety of questions. In 1910, the Nevada Secretary of State’s Offi ce fi rst compiled the data. Th e Offi ce updated the data 30 years later in 1940 “to meet a very defi nite and increasing interest in the political history of Nevada,” and has periodically updated it since. Th is is the fi rst edition following the Silver State’s sesquicentennial, and the State’s yearlong celebration of 150 years of Statehood in 2014. But this brief article will look to examine something other than political data. It’s more about the body of historical work concerning the subject of Nevada’s political history—a brief historiography. A short list of its contributors includes Dan De Quille and Mark Twain; Sam Davis and James Scrugham; Jeanne Wier and Anne Martin; Richard Lillard and Gilman Ostrander; Mary Ellen Glass and Effi e Mona Mack; Russell Elliott and James Hulse; William Rowley and Michael Green. Th eir works standout as essential secondary sources of Nevada history. For instance, Twain’s Roughing It (1872), De Quille’s Big Bonanza (1876) and Eliot Lord’s Comstock Mining & Mines (1883) off er an in-depth and anecdote-rich— whether fact or fi ction—glance into early Nevada and its mining camp way of life. -

Expect weekly newsletters from Axiom during the legislative session, and your Capitol Watch bill tracker URL will be sent every Friday. -Team Axiom- With 5 days to go, here's what's still on the Colorado legislature's plate Colorado Politics The list of major bills awaiting final action from the Colorado General Assembly has changed little in three weeks. Out of the 561 bills introduced in the 2019 General Assembly session, 296 are still awaiting actions by lawmakers as of 8 a.m. Monday, with a final deadline of midnight Friday. That's more than the number awaiting action — 271 — just last Wednesday. According to the daily tally from the Office of Legislative Legal Services, 168 bills are pending in the House, 128 in the Senate. Many are non-controversial. But Democratic lawmakers, who hold both chambers, now have to decide what they're willing to let go of before the midnight bell on Friday. While bills like red flag, oil and gas, and National Popular Vote have made it all the way to the governor's desk — and he's signed them — there are plenty of issues dividing the parties that will keep lawmakers up late at night for the next five days. -

We offer four brief assessments of the significance of the election for the region at a time when long-entrenched governments in England, Poland, and many parts of Latin America point to possible sea changes in international affairs. Moreland, The Citadel Introduction During the period of Democratic Party dominance of southern politics, Republicans were found mainly in the mountainous areas of western Virginia, western North Carolina, and eastern Tennessee and in a few other counties (e.g., the German counties of eas't central Te_xas) scattered sparsely in the region. Never strong enough to control statewide elections, Republicans in these areas were competitive locally, frequently succeeding in winning local offices. 1 As southern politics changed dramatically during the post-World War II period, research on the region's parties understandably focused on the growth of Republican support and organizational development in those geographic areas and electoral arenas historically characterized by Democratic control.
