Winter Sport Results - Term 2 2008 Home School - Scotch V Aquinas Date: 25/26 October 2008 Sport Basketball Result Comment 8A AC win 43 - 29 Aquinas 43 defeated Scotch 29 8B AC win 38 - 6 Aquinas 38 defeated Scotch 6 The 8Bs had a poor start to the season with a 38-6 loss to Aquinas. The 8Bs had little preparation and lacked any composure in both defence and attack against a much more organised Aquinas team. The first half the team gave away a lot of possession being 24-4 down. In the second half the team took a far more proactive approach in defence and rebounded strongly, restricting Aquinas to 14 points in the second half. In attack we didn’t convert the little possession we had into points. The team have reviewed the game and look forward to working on developing better composure and combinations for next week.

Josh Crawford, Elliot Shipman and Jasper Hunt where Scotch’s best players 8C AC win 46 - 10 Aquinas 46 defeated Scotch 10 The boys tried really hard and impressed in their first outing as a new team. Hopefully in the weeks to come, we can improve and continue the free flowing Basketball Scotch displayed on Friday. 9A SC win 31 - 29 Scotch 31 defeated Aquinas 29 The 9As had a gutsy win arch nemesis Aquinas, 30-27. The game was played at a fast pace and was exciting to watch. Sharp- shooter Eddy notched up some crucial steals and points, while big- man Dave was rock solid in defence. The team played with a sense of urgency and aggression which ultimately led to the close win. A special mention must go to the supporters who got the boys over the line. 9B AC win 40 - 11 Aquinas 40 defeated Scotch 11 The 9Bs opened the season with a loss against Aquinas College at the Scotch College Gym. After a reasonable start in which the scores were quite close 2 – 7, the team dropped its intensity and Aquinas began scoring freely to lead 22 – 5 at half time. Despite improving in a couple of areas, particularly rebounding in defence and calling for the ball, Aquinas were too fast and their aggressive defence resulted in a number of turnovers and rushed plays. Aquinas finished winning comfortably 40 –11. Alex Horley was the leading scorer for Scotch while Nic Minosora in his first game was our best player, showing the intensity that is required to be competitive at this level. 9C SC win 26 - 23 Scotch 26 defeated Aquinas 23 The 9Cs had a slow start to the match against Aquinas last Friday. Early on in the first half some holes in our defence opened up, allowing Aquinas to score rapidly. Four points down at half time, Scotch strengthened the defence by talking more and picking up rebounds from stray Aquinas shots. The turnaround at half time was due to a team effort to tighten up the defence and create opportunities in the offence to allow some good scores from Scotch players. A great team effort from all of those involved. 9D SC win 36 - 9 Scotch 36 defeated Aquinas 9 SC1 AC win 27 - 26 Aquinas 27 defeated Scotch 1 26 Down by 9 points at half time showed that Scotch1 struggled to get into the game. However in the second half Scotch1 were able to turn that around, almost completing an incredible upset. With 7 minutes to go, Scotch still trailed by 9 points but some sharp shooting by Macpherson and good hussle by “Junkie” Scotch came within 7 points with 3 minutes to go. A rattled Aquinas called a time out in a failed attempt to regroup. Scotch came back out and through Macpherson again and Jackson Brown scored two quick baskets to bring the margin to 3 points. Tim Flicker, who controlled the point superbly all game, then gave an assist to “Junkie” who scored a cheeky layup with seconds to go. Aquinas ran out the clock to only just hold on. Well done to the Scotch1 team. SC2 - Round robin SC3 - Round robin 3rd AC win 43 - 9 Aquinas 43 defeated Scotch 9 In a very one sided match against a strong Aquinas team the Scotch boys were made to defend for long periods of time. It was good to see that the boys showed commitment and enthusiasm in defence but we may have to work on “containment defence” rather than going for steals. This aggressive defence led to a number of boys being in foul trouble at half time. With the half time score 23-5 to Aquinas, the boys battled on. Brady Inman played well inside and Fletcher Ehlers also played a good game. The final score was 43-9 2nd SC win 37 - 29 Scotch 37 defeated Aquinas 29 Scotch 2nds Basketball had a very nice win against Aquinas. We controlled the game through our aggressive full court man on man defence to which Aquinas had no answer. Sam Clements led the team with 18 points. Nelson Wheeler scored two consecutive 3-pointers with 10 minutes left to give Scotch a unassailable lead. Josh Hennesy also had a consistent game playing very aggressive defence on a smaller player leading to many turnovers. 1st AC win 48 - 39 Aquinas 48 defeated Scotch 39 Scotch went into this game after a 30 point thrashing from Trinity a week before, but this time it was different. Scotch started this game with intensity and attitude. Defensively, Scotch were set up in a man on man match up, with extra help coming from a team orientated style of man. The starting five built a strong style of game and great support was added by the bench. Scotch took a slender one point lead into the half and were running full of confidence. The start of the second half saw Scotch build a five point lead only to see it whittle away as our offence tied up, all of a sudden Aquinas took the lead and finished the game a bit stronger than the Scotch team with a 9 point victory. A fantastic team game from Scotch with special mention to Jake McNally who top scored for the second week in a row, Tim Donohue who has established himself as very handy shooting guard, - Mark Hennessy who handled the point guard position with plenty of pressure and Vice Captain - Patrick Mellor who has established himself with consistency. Cricket Result Comment 8A SC win v John 5/94 - 6/61 Scotch 5/94 defeated John Forrest 6/61 Forrest The 8As beat John Forrest High School in a shortened 23-over-a-side match at John Forrest grounds. We batted first and scored 93 runs, getting off to a good start with a well-paced innings from Nick Gajewski (19) and Tim Carr (22). Matt Kelly (15no) and James Barrie (13no) weighed in at the end with strong stroke play. John Forrest was never able to get on top with none of their batsmen reaching double figures. They were 6/61 at the close. All the bowlers bowled well including our newly discovered left arm fast bowler Nick Gajewski with two on debut!

Overall this is a very talented team and the challenge will be to keep improving their standards. 8B - 8C - 9A JF win v John 3/116 - 7/112 John Forrest 3 for 116 defeated Scotch 7 for 112 Forrest In a very entertaining game of cricket Scotch lost a tight game against John Forrest. Scotch bowled first and all bowlers bowled a good line and length that made the opposition play some risky shots. Scotch was unable to make the most of some half chances and consequently John Forrest were able to maintain a steady run rate throughout their 20 overs. To contain John Forrest to 116 was a good effort.

Scotch faced a tough battle to reach the target. James Adams played very well to get the team off to a very good start. He played straight and scored a pleasing 38 retired. Alex Smith with a quick fire 30 combined with James to place the team in a strong position with 10 overs to go. Jake Copeman also combined with James to maintain the run rate and victory looked possible. Unfortunately the team lost some quick wickets which slowed the scoring rate and the side fell 5 runs short of victory.

It was a solid start to the season. There are some areas that the team needs to work on but there is certainly the talent within the team to challenge other sides. 9B JF win v John 103 - 4/97 John Forrest 103 defeated Scotch 4/97 Forrest 9C - 4th - No fixture 3rd SC win 9/189 - 52 Scotch 9/189 defeated Aquinas 52 Scotch batted first and scored 189/9 in their 30overs. Getting off to a rapid fire start, Peter Young scored 39 but we then lost a few wickets before being consolidated nicely by Xavier Ventris (42) and Rhys Edwards (25). Everyone pitched in with scores of over 10.

Aquinas was bowled out for 52. Russell Mathwin was outstanding taking 4/8 in his four overs at the start of the innings. Young, Nixon and Maitland all chipped in with a few. Good fielding and catching by all along with a good keeping display by Michael Campion was the basis of the victory. 2nd SC win 157 - 99 Scotch 157 defeated Aquinas 99 Scotch was at home against Aquinas on a gloomy Saturday morning. We won the toss and decided to bowl. Our opening pace attack of Michael Parks and Jack Chamberlain had the Aquinas batsmen in trouble, so much so that both were back in the pavilion to have them 2/26.

The rest of our bowlers in pacemen - Josh Tilley and Nick Munro, Leg spinner - Sean Carr, Slow medium – Kip Cameron and off spinner – Brad Forbes, bowled superbly to have Aquinas all out for 99.

Jack Chamberlain 8 – 3 – 20 Michael Parks 8.2 – 4 – 2 – 13 Nick Munro 7 – 3 – 1 – 5 Josh Tilley 11 – 4 – 2 – 16 Sean Carr 7 – 2 – 1 – 12 Brad Forbes 5 – 1 – 1 – 11

Stef D’Orsogna and Rob Kerr opened the batting and managed to put on a great stand of 56 runs through good running between wickets and sensible batting. Stef D’Orsogna was out for 30, Mitch Hobson joined Rob Kerr and took the total to 91 before Kerr was also caught for a fine 30.

Our remaining batsmen lost a bit of concentration and must be more patient. Michael Hobson and Sean Carr batted carefully to guide Scotch’s total to 157 all out.

Stef D’Orsogna 30 Rob Kerr 30 Michael Hobson 18 Sean Carr 20 Brad Forbes 11 Tyler Gilbert 10

Our fielding was outstanding and there were some great catches taken . Our hard running, good diving and ground work was fantastic to watch. This set the tone for our bowlers who bowled good line and length. It was a great team win fellas, looking forward to seeing you at training. 1st SC win 131 - 99 Scotch 131 defeated Aquinas 91 Greg King started the morning off by winning an important toss and putting Aquinas in to bat on a damp because of overnight rain. Michael Clements and Richard Trinder opened the and bowled reasonably well. After three overs Michael Clements managed to break through the openers taking an early wicket. Tom Ledger and Tom Foley were effective with a good line and length making the batsmen play. The fielding of the team has improved, however we must continue to work on this aspect of our game. In saying this, there were four outstanding catches taken in slips. Matt Goyder kept well and had a tremendous day behind the stumps. Continuous pressure from the Scotch team restricted Aquinas to 91.

Scotch got off to a bad start losing two early wickets. Will Bosisto showed great resilience with a hard fought 30. The partnership of Michael Clements and Will Bosisto proved to be a really effective one for the team. After the loss of quick wickets, Joel Paris and Will Bosisto got the team over the line. Scotch finished off with 150 and Aquinas finished 1 for 10 in the second innings. It was good to have a win as we had the better of the conditions and well done to the 2nds and 3rds for having a win, hopefully we can do the same against Hale this week. Tennis Result Comment 8A AC win 74 - 60 Aquinas 74 defeated Scotch 60 The Scotch boys had a disappointing start to the season going down to the boys in red and black. Despite this, there were some great matches and everyone tried their hardest. Particular mention must go to Jordan who won his singles match 6-2 5-0. Other notable efforts were by Nelson and the doubles combination of Randolph and James. 8B SC win 81 - 54 Scotch 81 defeated Aquinas 54 In rainy and windy conditions, the 8Bs played with composure and consideration. Overall, the boys had a good win, beating Aquinas 81-54. Congratulations to Will Mathwin and Alex Manuel who both had solid wins. The boys conducted themselves with true Scotch spirit, showing respect to the other team and displaying excellent sportsmanship. 8C SC win 64 - 46 Scotch 64 defeated Aquinas 46 9A AC win 88 - 44 Aquinas 88 defeated Scotch 44 9B AC win 22 - 11 Aquinas 22 defeated Scotch 11 9C AC win 97 - 40 Aquinas 97 defeated Scotch 40 3rd AC win 168 - 111 Aquinas 168 defeated Scotch 111 After a shaky start with some boys arriving late and the weather raining until play started, the boys did their best in the conditions and against a tough Aquinas side. Great wins were secured by Rob Webster and Andre Schoombe in the top two positions. The bottom half also held their ground, with an excellent win by Will Creasy. Congratulations must go to Brian Schuiling for a great effort coming back to win the second set. Well done to the boys for trying so hard. 2nd - Washed out 1st AC win 17 - 7 Aquinas 17 defeated Scotch 7 The encounter with Aquinas was to be our most difficult for the Term. Although playing on grass was an advantage to us, their skills and play were superior to ours. All boys played to their strengths and apart from too many unforced errors they focused on strategies that would give the greatest opportunities. Tim Inglis playing at 1st position pushed his opponent to the limit and although he lost both sets the second was very close. Dylan McCloskey won both his singles and split the first doubles pairing. Hugo Breakey showed real determination, winning both his singles and also splitting his doubles. The team showed real courage and supported each other throughout the rubber. Well done. Volleyball Result Comments 8/9A AC win 3 - 0 Aquinas 3 defeated Scotch 0 8/9B SC win 2 - 1 Scotch 2 defeated Aquinas 1 8/9C - Round robin 3rd AC win 3 - 0 Aquinas 3 defeated Scotch 0 2nd AC win 3 - 0 Aquinas 3 defeated Scotch 0 1st AC win 3 - 0 Aquinas 3 defeated Scotch 0 This was a resilient effort by the 1st Scotch Volleyball team against a much stronger opponent which saw them defeated 21-15, 21-14, 21-10. Before the match started we discovered one of the big players, Cam, was out with a calf injury sustained in the swimming pool the day before.

The big hitting stocks were slightly depleted and this became evident by the limited number of spikes being played by the Scotch boys throughout the game. There were plenty of positives that came out of the game including consistent serving by the whole team and numerous kill blocks and saves from difficult positions. Every set saw the Scotch boys go toe to toe with the Aquinas team for the first 15-20 points, then the more experienced Aquinas side pulled away to take each set.

Communication between team mates was quite low so that is definitely a point to be worked on in training when they take on Hale this week.

Due to the fact that most of the players had never played together (some who hadn’t even played Volleyball at all) it was a great achievement against a quality opposition. Well done boys, better luck against Hale. Water Polo Result Comment 8/9A Draw 8 - 8 Scotch 8 drew with Aquinas 8 Scotch started the game well by getting the first goal and this set the tone for the rest of the game. Scotch was able to meet Aquinas in every aspect of the game, even though the opposition was very strong with a four time ex-Olympian coach and many State players in their side. Scotch played three quarters of the game with an intensity that Aquinas was unable to meet, thanks to hard swimming by the Year 8s in the A side and a strong physical presence given by Harry McGregor and Will Mackay. This intensity saw Scotch lead at every change. At 3/4 time Scotch was ahead 6 goals to 4 but in the 4th quarter the intensity dropped and Aquinas was able to even the scores in the closing minutes of the game. The 8/9 As played a clean and hard swimming game of Water Polo and will be able to improve on this in the weeks to come. 8/9B SC win 11 - 4 Scotch 11 defeated Aquinas 4 8/9 Bs started the session off with a strong win over Aquinas 11 to 4. The boys defended well and got several counter attack goals. It was great to see seven different goal scorers. 8/9C - No Fixture 3rd SC win 17 - 4 Scotch 17 defeated Aquinas 4 Scotch put in a dominant performance for their first fixture of the season. We controlled the game and were able to set up numerous counter attacks and fast breaks. Aquinas struggled to break through a steady and controlled defence led by Alex Boston and Xavier Butler (in goals). A pleasing and confidence boosting performance should hold Scotch in good stead for future games. 2nd SC win 11 - 1 Scotch 11 defeated Aquinas 1 A beneficial pre-season workout for both the 1st and 2nd teams, gave the boys a solid grounding for their fixture against Aquinas. In both games the team had the experience of past 1st team players - this due to the fact we are currently in a developmental stage in Scotch Water Polo and we are basing our selections on a rotation basis. This is a great advantage to all players as they get the chance in the 2nd team to build up confidence and mature in the sport. On both occasions this was done exceptionally well. Scotch dominated both games, and more importantly started to develop the small aspects of the game we have been learning at practice. 1st AC win 12 - 3 Aquinas 12 defeated Scotch 3 The newly created squad, consisting of 12 players, unsure of each other’s abilities took to the water at Trinity College to take on Water Polo rivals, Aquinas College. The developing squad had a consistent training week that did not reflect the first 7 minutes of the game against a strong Aquinas team. The team did not shut down the Aquinas counter-attack and we were soon 4 goals down. However, after some consolidation after the first quarter, the team turned the tables and shut down their defence and we managed to secure a few goals of our own. This was short lived as Scotch was not able to shut down repeated drives from the Aquinas players. A multitude of Water Polo moments presented themselves and we need to capitalize on these moments to ensure continuity in our development. Many positives came of the game with plenty to build on – let’s move forward Scotch!
