Ljubica Vinulović The Miracle of Latomos: From the Apse of the Hosios David to the Icon from Poganovo. The Migration of the Idea of Salvation Abstract The main preoccupation of this paper will be iconographical analysis of depictions of the Miracle of Latomos, and the way in which this scene migrated from Greece to Bulgaria and Serbia. Firstly, we will discuss the historical background of the Miracle of Latomos and its composition, which is very specific in Byzantine art. Given the fact that it is depicted only three times in Byzantine art, in the mosaic in the apse of the church of Hosios David in Thessaloniki, in the mural painting in the ossuary in Bachkovo monastery in Bulgaria and in the double-sided icon from Poganovo, it has aroused great interest among art historians. The mosaic from Ho- sios David was discovered in 1927, and since then to (up until) the cleaning of the Icon from Poganovo in 1959, the composition of the Miracle of Latomos has had various, interpretations. We will try to explain how this composition has changed its iconography over the centuries and also discuss the question of patronage of the Icon from Poganovo. We will use the iconographic method and try to prove that this composition in all three cases has eschatological character. Key words: Miracle of Latomos, Theodora, Thessaloniki, Hosios David, Ossuary in Bachkovo monastery, Icon from Poganovo, Virgin Kataphyge, John the Theolo- gian, Helena Mrnjavčević The Miracle of Latomos can be traced back to the end of the third century AD, and it is closely related to the city of Thessaloniki and to princess Theodora who was a daughter of August Maximian, co-ruler with the Emperor Diocle- tian, who ruled in Milan during the fourth century.1 This information is prob- ably inaccurate. -

STATUS AND PROSPECTS OF PRESERVATION DOI: 10.26341/issn.2241-4002-2019-1a-3 Christina – Zoi Kefala Civil Engineer TE MSc in Historic Conservation, Oxford Brookes University Nikolaos Samaras University of Thessaly, Greece [email protected] Abstract The refugees, who came to Thessaloniki after the Minor Asia Catastrophe in 1922, according to the Treaty of Lausanne, were settled either in the abandoned Muslim residences or in new ones built in any free plot in Ano Poli of Thessaloniki. Due to the lack of space, some residences were developed along the Byzantine Wall of the City even in contact with it, using the Wall as part of the residence, making it impossible for the visitor to gain access to it, or even to see it. Since 1931, the project of the designation of the City Wall began and a Presidential Decree (Gov. Gazette 406Α΄ / 04.12.1931) was published and it was suggested the creation of a green belt alongside of the Wall. With the implementation of the Presidential Decree, about 900 houses are partially or fully demolished for the construction of the green belt. After that, the buildings of this zone are characterized as demolished and called "kastroplikton" and nowadays are divided in three categories, those that are still inhabited, those that have been abandoned and those that have already been collapsed due to lack of maintenance. Because of the designation of the City Wall, which had already been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, new presidential decrees and a lot of studies of the local authorities were published. -

ΒΥΖΑΝΤΙΝΕ MONUMENTS IN GREEK MACEDONIA RESEARCH WORK AND RESTORATION 1912-1962 After the liberation of Macedonia, one of the first concerns of the Greek Government was the discovery, restoration and preservation-of By zantine monuments in the area which had been disfigured or concealed by the passage of time or by enemy action. The Government Archaeological Service turned its timely attention to the medieval monuments found within the present borders of Greek Macedonia, and did not confine its activity to the big towns only, but extended it to more remote and inaccessible regions as well. It is difficult to give a complete account of present achievements in this field, not to mention all the new finds of the last fifty years. Here we shall confine our remarks to a few items, noting the most important only. The excavations for the early Christian antiquities will be dealt with in another article. I. Thessaloniki Thessaloniki, the second capital of Byzantium, has preserved a series of monuments dating from the beginning of the fourth century of our era down to the second half of the fourteenth century, inspite of a number of invasions by Saracens, Normans and Turks, civil wars and fires. These monuments give a fuller picture of the evolution of Byzantine art from the early Christian period than even the numerous monuments still preserved at Constantinople. Early Christian tombs, which are continually being unearthed inside the old city walls on the eastern and western sides of Thessaloniki, have provided a wealth of hitherto unknown material that throws light on the painting of this period. -

In this project, are participating 5 schools, from Ireland, Greece and United Kingdom: Loreto College from Dublin, Ireland, the 2nd High School of Alexandroupolis, the 1st High School of Lavrion, from Greece, the Devonport High School for Girls, Plumouth, from UK and the 3rd High School of Thermi, Thessaloniki, from Greece too. The participating students are 12 – 16 years old and the project is made in English language, as you can see. The projects title and purpose: to understand and to share our cities’ common maritime identity, by studying our cities' past, present and future, sharing information, activities, discussion, or even vision. More specifically we intended to Know and understand our partners's cultural & historical background by studying the history of each city through its port. We would like to practice foreign language through using English in students’ and teachers’ communication. We wanted to use ICT for research. And above all, we were eager to collaborate with teachers and students from other countries, playing games, answering questions, getting to know each others' identity and all that in the Twinspace platform. -

It was converted to a Christian church by the late fourth or early fifth century, a conversion which included the addition of a magnificent mosaic program within the dome of the Rotunda. This article both addresses the question of what this conversion meant and seeks to articulate a method for interpreting the Rotunda’s archaeological remains within a local context, broadly construed. Texts produced in Thessaloniki or which were known to be objects of civic pride, such as 1 Thessalonians, an account of local fourth-century martyrdoms, and the triumphal Arch of Galerius, are used to interpret the Rotunda’s conversion. -

Numerous visual and original literary sources illustrate the replacement of the Roman and Greek deities by the characters of the newly born religion – that is, Christianity. After the legalization of Christianity in the Roman Empire, the honor given to the Roman Emperor was naturally shifted to Jesus Christ, in terms of worship. Establishing the capital of a remote province, such as the Eastern part of Tracie, was a strategic political decision. Roman and later Christian practices inevitably embraced the local cults and traditions. Consequently, both Eastern and Western traditions can be traced in the practices of the new religious faith of the Roman Empire. This paper investigates the major Eastern sources which are often underestimated, while they are present in the Paleo-Christian visuals of the first centuries of the Common Era (CE) in the Eastern territories of the Roman Empire. One of these is the Buddhist visual representations of Gandhara art, which was later endorsed by Manichaeism in order to facilitate the rapid propagation of Mani’s teaching.
