    21 Days of Prayer and Fasting - Devotional It has been said that it only takes 21 days to form a “habit.” A habit is a pattern of behavior that has been picked up and occurs automatically, often called and “addiction.” It is our prayer that over the next 21 days, through reading God’s Word, spending time with Him, & applying His truth to your life, that you will develop a spiritual addiction to His presence. That it would become a habit for you to spend time with God daily. Through this devotional, and God working through His spirit within you- may you always have a spiritual hunger for more of Christ and may you be challenged to put your faith in action daily. We are praying for you! Day 1 One man challenged another to an all-day wood chopping contest. The challenger worked very hard, stopping only for a brief lunch break. The other man had a restful lunch and took several breaks during the day. At the end of the day, the challenger was surprised and annoyed to find that the other fellow had chopped substantially more wood than he had. "I don't get it," he said. "Every time I checked, you were taking a rest, yet you chopped more wood than I did." "But you didn't notice," said the winning woodsman, "that I was sharpening my ax when I sat down to rest." (Source unknown) If you're like me, sometimes it seems that dealing with the world is like chopping wood. It's hard work, it takes time and concentration, and in the end you never get as far as you thought you would.

Have a short time of chat and discussion focusing on what the group might want to say to God using these three words. Finally have a short time of open prayer or ask a leader to weave together all the topics mentioned, in a closing prayer. TSP, the first letters of Thank you, Sorry, Please, remind us of the recipe book abbreviation for teaspoon. It can be helpful to give younger children a plastic teaspoon to take home to remind them of these three basic categories for prayer. Three envelopes Some groups start out by being rather shy about praying out loud. In this case why not pin up three envelopes labelled Thank you Sorry and Please and let group members write their prayers on slips of paper and put them in the appropriate envelope. Dont forget to check the envelopes from time to time to let everyone share in the joy of the thank you prayers and to find out how the please prayers have been answered.     10 Ways to Prevail in Prayer Pastor Shane Idleman 7/22/2018 I’m going to talk about a very important topic this morning. The title is “10 Ways to Prevail in Prayer.” This morning I was reminded—I came up here and actually wrote it down—we have worship in the morning. We turn worship on around 6 am in the morning. We have worship on—loud, no lights really, and we’re just worshiping God for about an hour to an hour and a half, till around 7:30 am). God reminded me this morning that this is one of the most important points, and I forgot it—when I say that I mean I was prompted to write this down—but to prevail in prayer we must add worship to our daily lives. Worship is where you clear out the junk. Worship is when you get the heart right. It’s where you repent. It’s when you trust God for things. And I’ve noticed that sometimes it takes three or four songs, or five songs, until you’re finally getting that heart more tender to hear from God. So my encouragement is to be here. Try to be here at 6:30 in the morning on Sundays. I know it’s difficult, but it’s usually the flesh that is prevailing, right? Too tired, want to sleep, want to eat, want to get ready, do my hair—all those things. Oh, I don’t have enough time. Just come, and you will not be disappointed.

    SURF MUSIC By Geoffrey Himes It often seems that the United States is a pool table that has been tilted so all its hopes and dreams roll to the west. Whenever Americans want a new and better life, they head toward the setting sun. Whether it was the white-canvas covered wagons of the 1850s, the rusty Okie jalopies of the 1930s or the painted hippie vans of the 1960s, the direction is always westward—and eventually they collect in the pool table’s corner pocket known as Southern California. When Chuck Berry went chasing after his imagined utopia in the song “Promised Land," where did he end up? Los Angeles. Thousands of Hollywood movies had advertised Southern California as a nirvana of palm trees, sunshine, beautiful girls and beautiful boys, convincing folks from Oklahoma, Kansas and Ohio to pack up and move to the coast. By the end of the 1950s, the area around L.A. was full of almost as many transplanted Midwesterners as native Californians. The natives knew the region was no utopia, but the first and second-generation immigrants, these strangers in paradise, still clung to the notion of America’s western edge as the place where their dreams might come true. The teens and twentysomethings in these families—too young and too new to the West Coast to be disillusioned— turned that utopian impulse into a new kind of rock'n'roll: surf music. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, whose father and mother had moved to California from Kansas and Minnesota respectively, formed the Beach Boys.

Prayer brings spirituality, power and vitality to a church. Prayer is to be done with other elements of church growth. Prayer has a universal and unique character because no growth is possible without prayer even though other elements are performed well. The two elements for church growth, personal and programs, are discussed in their relationship with prayer. The personal element includes pastors and laymen praying about their specific positions of serving. The program element of prayer provides something like an initial explosion in such programs as worship, evangelism, discipleship training and the like. To be successful these must be accompanied by prayer. Church growth is the natural outcome if the church prays and uses the other elements for church growth. The writer supported the hypothesis by a questionnaire to the pastors of churches that were growing and churches that were stagnate (or growing at a very low level). The questionnaire asked the dynamics between the elements of church growth and prayer. He suggested that an the church members must pray to have a continuously growing church, and for this, various kinds of prayer meetings should be developed and managed.

A lot is riding on this set - a deep dive into their catalogue spanning their 10-year history. It's a new dawn for "America's Band". After four years of chaos dogged by declining record sales, lawsuits, mental breakdowns and worst of ail - irrelevance, this is their moment. Kicking off their two hour set with a Tdriving, kinetic 'Heroes And Villains' the hairy, funky-looking group are pretty much unrecognisable as the "Surfîng Doris Days" left behind by the counterculture back in '67. Leader Brian Wilson is absent, barely seen in public since he abandoned his opus SMiLE and abdicated his post as genius-in- residence. His brothers Cari and Dennis are here to avenge him, leading the charge of their formidable live assault. Even the lanky, balding figure of Mr 'California Girls' himself Mike Love has the bearing of a hip guru in his robes and beads. The gig is a triumph. With a new, hipper label behind them and a united front surely it was time for "America's Band" to shine, with or without their leader.     “HOLD MY CHILD IN YOUR SAFE ARMS” PRAYERS FROM FAMILY MEMBERS FOR THE CLASS OF 2023 Samford University Summer 2019 As we welcomed entering freshmen and their families for orientation at Samford throughout the past summer, an important element of the program was a worship service for parents, held in Reid Chapel. During the worship hour, parents and other family members were invited to complete prayer cards. Here are the prayers from family members for the Samford Class of 2023, with names and many other personal details removed. The prayers are a reminder to those of us who are Samford employees of our sacred calling in the stewardship of the lives entrusted to us. Lord, help me accept the fact that I’ve done everything I can to prepare my daughter for this new chapter in her life. Lord, keep your protection over her in the way that only you can do. Father, thank you for the gift of our son into our lives. It is my dearest hope for him to hold fast to you and your truth. Oh Lord, keep him close and empower him to live a life of glory to you and your kingdom. Unto you, I release him and trust your love and power. Lord, I ask that you grow our daughter exponentially during her time at Samford. Give her a servant’s heart; let her give herself wholly to you. Father, I ask that you would give me joy and not fear and sadness, letting her go. Help me to find my own place in you, independent of my children.
