Astronomy and Astronomers in Jules Verne's Novels
The Rˆole of Astronomy in Society and Culture Proceedings IAU Symposium No. 260, 2009 c 2009 International Astronomical Union D. Valls-Gabaud & A. Boksenberg, eds. DOI: 00.0000/X000000000000000X Astronomy and astronomers in Jules Verne’s novels Jacques Crovisier Observatoire de Paris, 5 place Jules Janssen, 92195 Meudon, France email: [email protected] Abstract. Almost all the Voyages Extraordinaires written by Jules Verne refer to astronomy. In some of them, astronomy is even the leading theme. However, Jules Verne was basically not learned in science. His knowledge of astronomy came from contemporaneous popular publications and discussions with specialists among his friends or his family. In this article, I examine, from the text and illustrations of his novels, how astronomy was perceived and conveyed by Jules Verne, with errors and limitations on the one hand, with great respect and enthusiasm on the other hand. This informs us on how astronomy was understood by an “honnˆete homme” in the late 19th century. Keywords. Verne J., literature, 19th century 1. Introduction Jules Verne (1828–1905) wrote more than 60 novels which constitute the Voyages Extraordinaires series†. Most of them were scientific novels, announcing modern science fiction. However, following the strong suggestions of his editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel, Jules Verne promoted science in his novels, so that they could be sold as educational material to the youth (Fig. 1). Jules Verne had no scientific education. He relied on popular publications and discussions with specialists chosen among friends and relatives. This article briefly presents several examples of how astronomy appears in the text and illustrations of the Voyages Extraordinaires. -
Planets, Comets and Small Bodies in Jules Verne's Novels

In some of From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon them, astronomy is even the leading theme. However, Jules Verne was basically not learned in science. His knowledge of astronomy came from contemporaneous popular publications and discussions with specialists among his friends or his family. Here, we examine, from selected texts and illustrations of his novels, how astronomy — and especially planetary science — was perceived and conveyed by Jules Verne, with errors and limitations on the one hand, with great respect and enthusiasm on the other hand. Jules Verne was born in Nantes, where most of the manuscripts of his novels are now deposited in the municipal library. They were heavily edited by the publishers Pierre-Jules and Louis-Jules Hetzel, by Jules Verne himself, and (for the last ones) by his son Michel Verne. This poster briefly discusses how astronomy appears in the texts and illustrations of the Voyages Extraordinaires, concentrating on several examples among planetary science. LESSON 5: Boneshaker by Cherie Priest
LESSON 5: Boneshaker by Cherie Priest On the forum, I gave you the following assignment: Read the first 5 pages of Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. List the Steampunk elements you find. Then list the ESSENTIAL Steampunk genre elements, and then the Character descriptions, then setting Your chart will look something like this: STEAMPUNK ...................... ESSENTIAL ...................CHARACTER ...........SETTING ELEMENTS ......................... ELEMENTS.....................ELEMENTS...............ELEMENTS black overcoat black overcoat 11 crooked stairs 11 crooked stairs and so on you can find Boneshaker here at Amazon The table part didn’t come out very well so here’s a better version. I added the word “ALL” to the column labels because I wanted you to understand that in those columns I’m not looking for any specific elements other than those labeled. For instance, under “CHARACTER ELEMENTS (ALL)” give all the character elements you find, not just elements pertaining to the Steampunk genre. I couldn’t find a specific definition for exactly what that term meant at Amazon.com, but just from the term itself, you can tell it’s the list of books that, while aren’t classics yet, are becoming so for various reasons. -
The Sounds of the North» Geir Jenssens Bruk Av Konkrete Lyder Geir Jenssens Use of Concrete Sounds
Emnekode: MUV450 Navn på kandidat: Trond Erik Jervell «The Sounds of the North» Geir Jenssens bruk av konkrete lyder Geir Jenssens use of concrete sounds Dato: 14.05.2018 Totalt antall sider: 64 Sammendrag I denne oppgaven undersøkes Geir Jenssens bruk av konkrete lyder. Abstract This thesis explores Geir Jenssen’s use of concrete sounds. The analysis starting point is Jenssen’s discography under the alias Biosphere. In view of this, his musical expression is also seen in the context of Musique Concrète. This leads to a debate regarding a possible classification of Jenssen's expression, as well as a discussion of what the term popular music may contain. In the press, Jenssen's persona and musical expressions are often linked to Arctic nature. This is something that is also addressed and discussed here. Is it possible to find traces of such an alleged inspiration in Jenssen's use of specific sounds and in his statements to the press i Forord Dette har vært et lang lerret å bleke! En lang periode med sykdom førte til utsettelser, og en stund så det ikke lyst ut for innlevering denne våren heller. -
“A Real Joy to Be Had” Kim Stanley Robinson Interviewed by Terry Bisson
“a Real joy to be haD” Kim Stanley RobinSon inteRVieWeD by teRRy biSSon David Hartwell once said that the Golden Age of Science Fiction is twelve. Was that true for you? What was your first literature? I didn’t know science fction existed until I was eighteen; then I fell in pretty deeply. The frst book I remember reading was Huckleberry Finn, and I still have that copy of the book with me, it has a gorgeous cover depicting Huck and Jim pulling a caught fsh onto the raft, in vibrant colors. For years I pretended to be Huck Finn. My parents subscribed to the Scholastic book of the month club, and I read those when they came in the mail pretty much the day of arrival. I read everything that caught my eye at the library when I was a child, then as a teenager did the same, but became a fan of locked- room detective mysteries, chiefy John Dickson Carr but also Ellery Queen, and all the rest of that crowd from the 1930s. Then just as I was leaving for college I ran into the science fction section at the library, all the books with their rocketship-and-radiation signs on the spine, and that was very exciting. In college I majored in history 78 | Kim Stanley RobinSon and literature, and on the side majored in science fction, absorbing the New Wave pretty much as it happened. Did your parents read to you as a kid? Did anyone? Do you read to your kids? Yes, my mom read to my brother and me at bed- time, and then I read on by myself with a fashlight. -

Emergence, AI and Intellectual Property
The Emergent1 Property2 Market3 Jon Crowcroft, University of Cambridge, Computer Laboratory Abstract The title of this piece is a somewhat heavy-handed word play. The property market I’m writing about is the market in Intellectual Property, which is broken in so many ways, evidenced by the existence of patent mountains and patent trolls, fighting over how many angles they can fit in the 360 degrees around the head of a pin, rather than actually innovating. (It is well known in creative tech circles that pausing to talk to the IP lawyers would never have led to the discovery of the Internet Protocol). The Emergent Property I’m referring to is the possibility that such a complex system could fairly suddenly exhibit some new behavior. In this article, I speculate that this new behavior could just be that the idea of property ceases to exist. The article is written somewhat derivatively after the 1960s SF style of writers such as Cyril Kornbluth, JG Ballard, and John Brunner. Any resemblance to their very creative output is entirely good luck rather than actual skill. 1 A good example of emergence is described in Stephenson’s Anathem book. Complex systems suddenly exhibit simple, powerful effects, fireflies flashing and synchronizing all together in phase, or a murmuration of starlings being common natural examples. Crystalisation. See also footnote 33. 2 Some people have proposed putting the UK’s Land Registry (the national record of property) on the blockchain.
