Low-lying coastal urban centers, populated deltas, and coastal protected areas are key societal hotspots of coastal vulnerability in terms of relative sea level change. Land deformation on a local scale can significantly affect estimations, so it is necessary to understand the rhythm and spatial distribution of potential land subsidence/uplift in coastal areas. The present study deals with the determination of the relative vertical rates of the land deformation and the sea-surface height by using multi-source Earth observation—synthetic aperture radar (SAR), global navigation satellite system (GNSS), tide gauge, and altimetry data. To this end, the multi-temporal SAR interferometry (MT-InSAR) technique was used in order to exploit the most recent Copernicus Sentinel-1 data. The products were set to a reference frame by using GNSS measurements and were combined with a re-analysis model assimilating satellite altimetry data, obtained by the Copernicus Marine Service. -

Acyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (CyanoHAB) has occurred in May 2015 in the Delta of Axios River, in Thessaloniki, in the region of Central Macedonia, in Northern Greece. The bloom expanded to the coastline of Thermaikos Gulf near the areas of Chalastra and Kimina. Toxic Anabaena sp. was isolated from the water samples. Microcystin-RR(50ppb) was confirmed with immunoassay method for microcystins (Adda specific ELISA) and Liquid Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS).In this area monitoring of microcystins and its algal blooms are only experimentally applied by a satellite system. This research investigated the toxin and microcystin cells in the local coastal water and emphasize to the satellite remote sensing, as a precaution, to reduce and avoid impacts on animals’ health, Public Health and ecosystems, after harmful algal blooms. The problem of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) has risen the last decades (O’Neil et al., 2012). -

MUSSEL FARMING ACTIVITY IN THERMAIKOS GULF: AN OVERVIEW FOCUSING ON THE CHALLENGES OF STAKEHOLDERS' PARTNERSHIPS AND INTERDISCIPLINARITY IN THE FRAMEWORK OF ICZM Konstantinou Z.I., Krestenitis Y.N. Division of Hydraulics & Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, 54124, Greece Abstract This paper attempts to deal with two main categories of challenges faced in any ICZM attempt: (i) those created during the interface of different stakeholders (administrators, private investors, public, scientific community, etc.) and (ii) those created during the interface between experts from different fields (for instance between environmentalists and engineers or sociologists, etc.) during the drawing up of integrated management plans. The issue is very crucial regarding the acceptance and development of integrated coastal management but it is also strongly related to the area of implementation, as the unique cultural and circumstantial characteristics are important parameters of influence. More specifically this paper will focus on the aforementioned elements regarding the sustainable management of the mussel-farming activity on Thermaikos gulf, trying to identify and highlight the reasons determining the interrelationships between different stakeholders and the ways that they affect the implementation of coastal management in the area regarding this issue. Introduction The basic concept of Integrated Coastal Zone Management is utterly related both to (i) the comprehension of the stakeholders in the decision-making process and also to (ii) the collaboration of multidiscipline experts to the plan and implementation procedure (Tett et al.2011). Those fields can provide a range of opportunities for collaboration and development yet they can also prove to be handicaps of ICZM when the interaction procedure is not kept clear and transparent through all of its stages. -
Macedonia in Greek Administration
Preface When in 1821 Greeks started their revolt against the Ottoman Empire and fought for an independent state they had two major ideological issues to deal with: the identity of the new state and its future borders. If Hellas (Ελλάς) was the appropriate name for Modern Greece and ancient glory the most valuable argument for Greek independence, then how could Macedonia been kept apart? After all it was an integral part of Greek ancient history, which had nourished every single generation of educated people—not only Greeks—even before the war of Greek independence. The legendary figure of Alexander the Great had surfed smoothly over centuries of ignorance escorted by powerful myths and tales to find its appropriate position in the last part of 19th century, ancient history textbooks. They were the chapters of the Macedonian Hegemony and the Hellenistic period (4th and 3rd centuries B.C.), which had brought Greek culture to the frontiers of the then known world. Ancient History proved a very solid and enduring foundation for the modern Greek state. In this context, in the last quarter of the 19th century the case of Macedonia, this ill-defined region, was regarded as the final frontier of Hellenism, which Greece had to defend against the Slavs, if it was to survive as a state and not to end up as a sad caricature of Ancient Hellas. The romantic fight of the Greeks for Macedonia—in fact for the littoral part of it—created its own legend, which was shaped through a series of declared and undeclared wars from the 1878 Eastern Crisis to World War II. -

Macedonia as a Roman protectorate (168–148 BC) A few months after defeating Perseus, the last king of Macedonia, at Pydna (168 BC) the Romans found themselves facing the crucial question of how to govern the country. The question was not a new one. It had arisen thirty years before, after their victory over Perseus’ father, Philip V, at Cynoscephalae (197 BC), when the solution adopted was to preserve the kingdom within its old historical boundaries and to have the heir to the throne, Demetrius, educated in Rome, so that Macedonia would continue to fulfil its vital role as a rampart defending southern Greece against barbarian invasion. The latest war had shown that this solution was unrealistic, and that harsher measures were re- quired for more effective control over the land. The Romans still, however, avoided becoming directly involved in the government of the country, for they did not want to assume responsibility for its defence. They therefore, having set the amount of the an- nual taxation at 100 talents, or half its previous level (an unavoidable reduction given that they were abolishing some of the revenues enjoyed by the previous regime), and collected spoils and plunder worth a total of 6000 talents, opted for the solution of a Macedonia politically divided and economically enfeebled. The political fragmentation of Macedonia was achieved primarily by the creation of four self-governing “cantons” (regiones); these, with the exception of Paeonia (which, although inhabited by a single tribe, was divided under the new system), were defined on the basis of their historical boundaries. -

The presence of toxic marine cyanobacteria and secondary metabolites, microcystins, were studied in Thermaikos Gulf in Central Macedonia in Greece, during the period from March 2013 to March 2014. Toxic marine cyanobacteria were isolated in marine agar and identified with PCR using primers based on 16S rDNA. The presence of microcystins in water extraction was detected by immunoassay (competitive ELISA). The concentration was ranged from 0.15 to 5ppm. It was observed that populations of toxic marine cyanobacteria were increasing during spring and early winter and there was a correlation to the physical and chemical parameters of the water. -
