E. Stage and Playing Space The stage has a forty-five foot wide and eighteen-foot tall proscenium. The apron is thirteen feet deep. The stage is twenty-four feet deep. This brings it to a total of thirty-seven feet deep center stage. Due to the depth of the apron, we have received an architectural waiver for the Main Drape rule. Set and strike can take place with the curtain open and UIL set pieces can be set in front of the Main Drape. There will be no fire, flame, tobacco, or burning of anything in the auditorium according to T.I.S.D. rules. The only food and drinks allowed in the Auditorium are those used on stage in the performance of the play. We are providing spike tape for you needs. No double spiking will be permitted and clear tape can be placed over the spike tape. Please limit the length of any one piece of spike tape to no more than 2 inches. The rope to open and close the Main Drape is located stage right. You are permitted to open and close it yourself or if necessary, our technician can do this for you. DO NOT put tape on the travel rope to spike it; it will jam. You may put spike tape on the stage floor to set its location. They will open them for you prior to your strike. Fog, Haze, and Smoke effects can only be permitted in the THS Auditorium with permission from the auditorium manager. Email [email protected] in advance of your rehearsal to be informed of approval process. We have furnished stage dimensions. It is included in this packet.

Two hallways lead to entrances and exits. Late entrances will not be permitted once a show begins. There is no food, drink, or tobacco permitted in the Tomball High School auditorium. We will reserve row O for the directors / alternates of the performing company.

9. Procedures

Casts and crews will take hand props with them to and from rehearsals and performances. Casts and crews must be absolutely quiet both in approaching and leaving the stage area during rehearsal and contest. Please have one director assigned to be in charge of all wallets, watches, jewelry, cell phones, Ipods, etc. during rehearsals and contest. Tomball High School will not be responsible for valuables.

10.Dressing Room Please be aware that only company members will be permitted into the rest of the school. No family, friends, or supporters can visit your dressing room or have access to your company except in the lobby or auditorium. Only those company members whose names appear on the eligibility list may access the rest of the school. The classrooms assigned to you contain personal property of the teachers, computers, televisions, telephones, equipment, etc. Please don’t take advantage of their generosity. Your dressing room (except the last play) must be completely cleaned out by the beginning of the awards ceremony.

11.Performances

After cast members are made up and are in costumes, they should not leave the dressing rooms until called. They are not to go into the theatre in make-up and costumes. Enter directly to the stage when notified. Participants are reminded that the contest will begin at 1:30 P.M., and the plays following will run back to back, when possible. All directors will meet with the critic judge at 12:00 P.M. in Counseling Suite. Following each performance, the participants in that performance will return to the dressing room to remove any costumes and makeup. Play casts are reminded not to re-enter the theatre in makeup or costume or while a play is in progress. After the performance, cast members are not to go into the theatre in theatrical make-up and costumes.

12.Awards and Critiques

The announcement of individual awards, advancing plays and the judge’s critiques will follow the last performance. The casts are reminded not to re-enter the theatre in makeup or costume. In accordance with the spirit and the purpose of the U.I.L. Play Contest, all casts and crews are encouraged to stay for the critiques of all plays.

From the Leaguer: “The Decision: Accepting the judge’s decision requires graciousness on the part of those who advance as well as those who don’t. Receiving an award in the One-Act Play Contest is no reason for a riotous demonstration. Applause is the ONLY acceptable method to pay tribute in the theatre. Your task as director is to so instruct your students on acceptable theatre etiquette.”

13.Performing Fee

The contest fee for the Bi-District Contest is $600, made payable to Tomball HS, and is due at the rehearsal.

Note: Our Booster Club will have a concession with some “meal” type food. The school is also within ten minutes of several fast food restaurants. Food and drinks are not allowed in the auditorium.

It is our aim to run a smooth competition. Anything we can do for you within our bounds we will attempt. We want you to have a positive experience and for your students to depart from our campus with a sense of dedication and pride.
