Chapter 4 Logistics-related Facilities and Operation: Land Transport THE STUDY ON MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS SYSTEM OF THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN REGION AND MASTER PLAN FINAL REPORT Chapter 4 Logistics-related Facilities and Operation: Land Transport 4.1 Introduction This chapter explores the current conditions of land transportation modes and facilities. Transport modes including roads, railways, and inland waterways in Egypt are assessed, focusing on their roles in the logistics system. Inland transport facilities including dry ports (facilities adopted primarily to decongest sea ports from containers) and to less extent, border crossing ports, are also investigated based on the data available. In order to enhance the logistics system, the role of private stakeholders and the main governmental organizations whose functions have impact on logistics are considered. Finally, the bottlenecks are identified and countermeasures are recommended to realize an efficient logistics system. 4.1.1 Current Trend of Different Transport Modes Sharing The trends and developments shaping the freight transport industry have great impact on the assigned freight volumes carried on the different inland transport modes. A trend that can be commonly observed in several countries around the world is the continuous increase in the share of road freight transport rather than other modes. Such a trend creates tremendous pressure on the road network. Japan for instance faces a situation where road freight’s share is increasing while the share of the other

Cnapter 1 JOURNtíY TO EGYFT'tJ FARTHEST CORNER FAROUK EL-iiAZ National Air and Space Museum Smithsonian Institution Washington, D.C. 2Ü560 AJtiSTRACT fhe Gilf Kebi'T-Uweinat expedition of 19?8 was organised to ve7*ify geologic interpretations of Apotto-Soyuz photo- graphs. These photographs and Landsat images showed features that are reminisaent of those depicted by Mariner and Viking missions to Mars, It was therefore intended to field study these features in order to better understand their morphologic analogs on Mars, For two weeks^ an inter-diseiptinary group of sixteen researchers investigated the extremely arid treats across 2500 km from Kharga Oasis south~southwest to the border intersection of Egypt, Libya and Sudan. The convoy of vehicles consisted of six Soviet Gaz desert jeeps^ two Volkswagen type 181 cars, two 4.5-ton tanker trucks for water and gasoline^ and one 12-ton lorry loaded i¿ñ.th food and camp supplies. The findings of the expedition tend support to other indications that climate change played a significant role in the formation of the eastern Sahara. These findings also reveal that correlations between the eotian features in southwestern Egypt and the wind-blown patterns an the surface of Mars will result in a better imderstanding of eotian acti- vity an both planets. INTRODUCTION The seeds of the 1978 expedition to southwestern Egypt were planted four years earlier during the planning for astronaut obser- vations and photography on the Apolio-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). As principal investigator for the "Earth Observations and Photography" ASTP experiment, 1 was responsible for selecting and flight-scheduling of sites for study from Earth orbit (El-Baz and Mitchell, 1976).

The project villages are El Mounira in the Kharga Oasis, and Balat in Dakhla Oasis. El Mounira is to receive a sewerage system, a pump station, a force main to a new stabilization pond wastewater treatment plant, and the treatment plant itself. Balat is to receive a new stabilization pond plant with nearly 10 times the capacity of the plant it replaces. The additional three villages are Naser El Thowra in the Kharga Oasis and El Gedida and Tanidah in the Dakhla Oasis and will each receive a sewerage system, a pump station, a force main and the new stabilization pond wastewater treatment plant.

Abstract. The sustainable agricultural development in the northwest coast of Egypt suffers constantly from the effects of surface runoff. Moreover, there is an urgent need by decision makers to know the effects of runoff. So the aim of this work is to integrate remote sensing and field data and the natural resource conservation service curve number model (NRCS-CN).using geographic information systems (GIS) for spatial evaluation of surface runoff .CN approach to assessment the effect of patio-temporal variations of different soil types as well as potential climate change impact on surface runoff. DEM was used to describe the effects of slope variables on water retention and surface runoff volumes. In addition the results reflects that the magnitude of surface runoff is associated with CN values using NRCS-CN model . The average of water retention ranging between 2.5 to 3.9m the results illustrated that the highest value of runoff is distinguished around the urban area and its surrounding where it ranged between 138 - 199 mm. The results show an increase in the amount of surface runoff to 199 mm when rainfall increases 200 mm / year.
