I was familiar with Sosin, proximity to the Jewish Nursing Home meant that as I could see its construction from our pool, and I either everyone would be elderly and Jewish. I had a private room with cable, enough outlets to plug in a laptop, tablet, and cellphone. It had a large accessible bathroom, picture windows that overlooked trees and woods, a good rehab program, meals when I wanted them, and the opportunity to have visitors whenever I desired. It was enough for me to rest and recover, and I had the option to remain in my room, work, relax, or congregate with other patients in an inviting atmosphere.

Mentally, I was ready to stand up and sprint home. Physically, I couldn’t. The doctors, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, aides, and housekeeping crew were always cheering me on, and I felt that they went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable when I was in pain; and dignified when I couldn’t take care of my basic needs. I couldn’t tolerate the food, partly because of an anesthesia complication. They let people bring my favorite foods from home. One aide, a native of Nepal, made me a noodle dish from her country, and added extra cayenne so I could taste the heat. Another fixed me smoothies. When I returned to work mode, and decided

I progressed slowly to a walker with their consistent help, and then to a cane, if I were with someone.

I was anxious to go home and return to work. Being self-employed, every day in Sosin was a day of little income. Once my surgeon said I could try going home, I set a departure date. My physical therapist and my occupational therapist wheeled me home, so they could evaluate the entrance to my condo and the interior, and then set a schedule of customized therapy, so I could return home two weeks hence. The social worker made arrangements for home physical therapy.

Flash forward to the present. I do my daily mile-plus walks through the JGS-Lifecare campus, and many folks recognize me and encourage me. Operated by remote control, it offers 3 programs: Relax, Refresh and Comfort. Partial funding for this chair was received from the Discretionary Fund of the Jewish Endowment Foundation, a division of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts.

“This chair will enhance the ability of the Sensory Room to promote feelings of well-being and will compliment all of the other modalities we are introducing,” remarked Jones. On Christmas Day over 20 community volunteers continued the annual tradition of supporting residents and staff of the Julian J. Leavitt Family Jewish Nursing Home, Sosin Center for Rehabilitation, and Ruth’s House Assisted Living Residence in Longmeadow for “Honorable Menschen Day.”

Cheryl Gumlaw, Director of Life Enrichment at the Leavitt Family Jewish Home, and volunteer coordinator for JGS Lifecare, explained “Honorable Menschen Day,” brings together those willing to provide assistance in non-clinical and personal care roles to give residents some extra activity during the day, and support to staff on the holiday. “Mensch” is a Yiddish word that describes a person of good moral character who does good deeds. That is why we call it “Honorable Menschen Day,” in tribute to our caring and dedicated volunteers.”

Volunteers greeted visitors, engaged in “friendly visits” Gerry Lazarus, Barbara Zippin, Linda Radding, Ed Radding and Lenny Schreiber have a lot of fun assisting in the laundry. Staff with residents, and spread good holiday cheer. Many led members Danika Brathwaite and Yaritza Batista joined in the fun activities throughout the day, including bingo and word trivia; and appreciated the assistance! staffed the gift shop and coffee shop; and others supported housekeeping staff by folding laundry. The volunteers – both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals -- included community members, board members, staff members, and families. In addition to benefiting the residents across the JGS Lifecare campus, the volunteers also lightened the load of the staff who were working on the holiday, allowing them to spend more time with their loved ones.

“We rely on our volunteers every day,” said Gumlaw. “They staff our coffee and gifts shops, run our bingo games and other Magnolia Templeton runs the Bingo Game with a smile! activities, provide entertainment and companionship. They deliver mail and help with laundry. We couldn’t care for our Stephanie residents as well as we do without the dedication and support Emirzian and granddaughter of our volunteers.” Kiarra Austin and friend Gumlaw added that more volunteers are needed. “As an Talia Dulberg organization, we constantly seek individuals and groups to enjoyed helping provide friendship and enjoyment to our residents, and add residents with their Bingo meaningful programs and services that ease the challenges of cards. aging.”
