The report taps into many data sources to draw an up-to-date picture on tourism and travel in Canada by both Canadians and foreign visitors. With a vast array of facts and figures, it is an essential sourcebook for both practitioners and researchers in tourism. The report builds a picture of both the supply of tourism services and the demand for these services. It highlights the National Tourism Indicators, which measure the importance of tourism to the Canadian economy. While Statistics Canada surveys underlie most of the results, data from other bodies, notably the World Tourism Organisation, are also featured. The 2001 edition also provides more interpretation and analysis than the previous edition, released in 1999. Each chapter has a lead article, made possible through the involvement of many analysts. The Tourism Statistical Digest is the fruit of a collaborative effort by Statistics Canada’s Tourism Statistics Program and the Canadian Tourism Commission. Happy reading. Birch Date approved: 6/10/14 ii Abstract In the two decades prior to the 2008 financial crisis, the Mexican government pursued policies aimed at liberalizing markets, while simultaneously trying to ensure the stability of the peso. These policies consisted of monetary and fiscal controls to keep inflation low and free trade agreements to reduce Mexico’s dependence on the United States. The policies significantly reduced the country’s public deficit and were implemented in hopes that they would help reduce the country’s exposure to currency crises. Yet, despite all provisions the Mexican government put in place, the country’s peso still lost two percent of its value in the first three days following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, the US-based investment firm.

    United States General Accounting Office GAO Staff Study May 1997 FINANCIAL CRISIS MANAGEMENT Four Financial Crises in the 1980s GAO/GGD-97-96 Preface The increasing interconnectedness of financial institutions and markets has highlighted the need to ensure that diverse federal, state, international, and private financial organizations work together to effectively contain and resolve financial disruptions. The federal government’s ability to manage financial crises effectively is important to the stability of the U.S. financial system and economy as well as the worldwide financial system. In seeking to expand its current knowledge of financial crisis management, GAO studied federal actions that successfully contained four major financial crises of the turbulent 1980s—the Mexican debt crisis of 1982; the near failure of the Continental Illinois National Bank in 1984; the run on state-chartered, privately insured savings and loan institutions in Ohio in 1985; and the stock market crash of 1987. On the basis of a review of emergency response literature, GAO focused on three phases of financial crisis management. The preparedness phase included activities undertaken prior to the occurrence of a crisis. The containment phase included activities undertaken in immediate response to a financial crisis to mitigate the financial disruption and lessen ill effects on the financial system. The resolution phase included activities undertaken to reduce the likelihood of the recurrence of the crisis or similar financial crises. GAO observed that leadership was critical for effective management and containment of each of the four financial crises. Treasury and the Federal Reserve led crisis containment efforts because of their financial resources, access, and expertise, although each agency had its own distinct and complementary leadership role.

This paper is an attempt at identifying the causes and commonalities of financial crises in Latin America over the past fifty years. This identification is carried out through an extensive review and analysis of the literature on causes of twelve major financial crises spanning over six major nations in Latin America. In addition, we conduct a Logit Binary Regression on commodity, interest rate and currency indexes to determine how closely related shifts in prices of the underlying asset are to times of financial crises. Through the literature review, we find the following major commonalities among the Latin American financial crises: over-dependence on commodities, poor macro and currency policies and overall political instability.

Après avoir analysé la dynamique d’innovation financière, l’accent est mis sur le processus de titrisation comme moteur d’une nouvelle forme du capital financier, le capital fictif, qui nourrit les bulles spéculatives. L’éclatement de la dernière bulle, centré sur le marché immobilier américain, a déclenché la crise financière la plus sérieuse depuis des décennies. L’article se conclut sur une discussion des implications possibles de cette crise systémique. Abstract This contribution to the debate on finance-led capitalism seeks to identify the principal structural changes in the nature of finance over the last couple of decades. After analyzing the dynamic of financial innovation, emphasis is put on the process of securitization as the engine of a new form of financial capital, fictitious capital, which encourages asset bubbles. The burst of the latest bubble, centered on the U.S. housing market, has triggered the most serious financial crisis in decades and a serious global downturn. The article ends with a discussion of likely implications of this systemic crisis.     What Lessons Can Be Learned from Recent Financial Crises? The Argentine Experience Pedro Pou Unfortunately, Argentina has an abundant history of financial crises. The only advantage I can see from this painful experience is that it means that occasionally I get invitations to extremely interesting events such as this one, and I must congratulate the organizers for putting together such an excellent program in such a beautiful place. I will just mention three episodes of Argentina’s recent financial experience and try to draw from them the main lessons as I see them: (1) the banking crisis of 1982, (2) the hyperinflationary experience of 1989-90, and (3) the banking crisis of 1995. These three crises are so different, that understanding them should aid in our understanding of financial crises in general. The 1980-82 crisis might be referred to as a crisis of “generalized moral hazard” and was similar to the 1989 crisis in that they were both clearly crises of solvency. However, the main difference was that while the 1980-82 crisis was due to the insolvency of the private sector, the 1989 crisis was due to government insolvency. Finally, the 1995, or “tequila” crisis, was a totally different kind of crisis, since it was a crisis of liquidity not of solvency. The 1980-82 banking crisis: generalized moral hazard It has been suggested by many that the crisis of 1982 was provoked 141 142 Pedro Pou in large part due to inconsistent macroeconomic policies applied in the period before the crisis and, in particular, to inconsistent fiscal and exchange rate policies.1 However, although the macroeconomic policy stance was cer- tainly a contributory factor, Fernández (1983) has argued forcefully that the problems were amplified by the inherent instability of the financial system.

ABSTRACT • Economic histories of Nations contain several success stories of economic reforms undertaken by them, but what are remembered most are the years of hardship suffered by millions of populations at times of economic crisis. • The lecture on World Economic History - Major Financial Crisis will cover 7 major financial crisis that the world witnessed in the last 100 years. The 7 crises that will be presented are the Great Depression 1932; the Suez Crisis 1956; the International Debt Crisis 1982; the East Asian Economic Crisis 1997-2001; the Russian Economic Crisis 1992-97, the Latin American Debt Crisis in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina 1994-2002, and the Global Economic Recession 2007-09. ABSTRACT • The Great Depression, the Suez Crisis, the International Debt Crisis, the East Asian Crisis, the Latin American Debt Crisis and the Great Recession were episodes in which a large number of countries simultaneously experienced crisis. In each instance, the global crisis was preceded by elevated growth rates and collapses in the year of financial turmoil.

  • Mexico: Five Years After the Crisis
    Mexico: Five Years after the Crisis Daniel Lederman, Ana María Menéndez, Guillermo Perry and Joseph Stiglitz* The World Bank April 13, 2000 Prepared for presentation at the ABCDE Conference of the World Bank, April 18-19, 2000 Abstract This study identifies the main factors that explain the recovery of the Mexican economy after the currency crisis of 1995. A growth decomposition exercise shows that export growth mitigated somewhat the effect of the crisis in 1995, but contributed only modestly to the recovery afterwards. The V-shaped behavior of fixed investment was the main factor behind the economic slowdown during the crisis and the strength of the subsequent recovery. Evidence for Indonesia, Korea, and Thailand also show that fixed investment explained a substantial portion of the reduction in economic growth during their recent crises. Econometric results show that fixed investment fell precipitously in 1995 as a result of both the negative income effect and the increase in the cost of capital caused by the sharp depreciation of the currency. However, this initial contractionary effects of the devaluation were followed by the dominance of the substitution effect in favor of tradables output, which, in the Mexican case, has a higher multiplier effect on investment than non-tradable output. We found no evidence of a “confidence” effect associated with hikes in real interest rates (we did find it in the 1982-83 crisis, however). Also, we found support for the view that access to the U.S. financial market was a key feature of the recovery after 1995. A policy implication that emerges from the analysis is that, for countries like Mexico, currency depreciation, in spite of initial contractionary effects, appears as a better policy response to speculative attacks than interest rate defenses of overvalued currency levels.
