Christian Richard Davis House (Wright, 1950) House–Samara (1954) are tucked away in leafy enclaves, and some, like the midcentury modern wonders of Columbus, hide in plain sight. On the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy’s annual Out and About Wright tour, you’ll get to see both of Wright’s distinctive central Indiana works as well as several highlights around Indianapolis. Christian House–Samara (Wright, 1954) Nature Park at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. After a brief stop at local icon The Pyramids (Roche Dinkeloo and Associates, 1967), we’ll head out to Wright’s Samara house in West Lafayette, a copper fascia-adorned Usonian still occupied by its original owner, and Davis House in Marion, with its unique 38-foot central octagonal teepee (we are one of the very few groups to tour this unique Wright work!). A seated lunch is included. Book Reviews 319 somebody like me who grew up with dry German Riesling, it was a great pleasure to read, but really, anybody interested in the story of dry Riesling will enjoy reading this book. MATTHEWS: Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing. University of California Press, Oakland, 2016, 288 pp., ISBN 978-0-520-27695-6 (hardcover), $34.95. I immensely enjoyed reading this book, not so much because its author cites one of my articles, but mainly because he quotes Vladimir Nabokov, one of my favorite writers, who starts his Lolita with words that could apply to a wine when you taste it: “the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap at three on the teeth.” The preface sets the scene: “As I gained experience in the world of viticulture, I found that some of the received archetypes were incongruous with elementary crop science. For example, there is a long-standing argument that one cannot both irrigate vines and produce fine wines (yet rain and irrigation water are the same tograpevines)” (pp. ix–x). It is followed by four chapters debunking four false truths: (a) wine quality is determined by low yield and small berries; (b) vine balance is the key to fine wine grapes; (c) there is a critical ripening period, and vines should be stressed; and (d) terroir matters. I will try to deal fairly with all these issues, but it will come as no sur- prise to those who know me a bit if I spend more time on terroir. -

Gwynn Henderson Misconceptions about the people who lived in what is now the state of Kentucky before it was settled by Euro-Americans and Afro-Americans take many forms. These incorrect ideas range from the specific (how the native peoples dressed, how their houses appeared, how they made their living, what language they spoke) to the general (the diversity of their way of life, the length of their presence here, their place of origin, their spiritual beliefs, and the organization of their political and economic systems).
