The chances are that Indian Carson City didn=t show his sire=s precocity, but he Blessing will have to prove similarly adaptable if she is made up for lost time at three, winning five of his to maintain her unbeaten record. Indian Blessing=s fourth dam, Pia=s Lady, visited Indian Blessing=s pedigree contains plenty of fast Clever Trick to produce One Smart Lady, a mare who horses but, as an Englishman, I like to think that the added to the family=s reputation by becoming the dam main source of her speed is her male line, which traces of the GI Ballerina H. winner Roamin Rachel. Roamin to the top European sprinters Fortino and Grey Rachel hit the jackpot as a broodmare by producing the Sovereign. Bearing in mind that followed a similar path to her dam, visiting Clever his dam Kantado and broodmare sire Saulingo had Trick=s unexceptional son Matchlite to produce Indian raced almost exclusively over five furlongs, it came as a Blessing=s second dam Lady=s Legacy. bit of a surprise when In Excess proved capable of carrying his speed as far as 13 miles, the distance of Indian Blessing, f, 2005 his record-breaking win in the GI Suburban H. The Caro (Ire) Siberian Express explanation is that In Excess=s grandsire Caro--the Indian Call In Excess (Ire) product of a mating between a sprinter and a stayer-- Saulingo (GB) Kantado (Ire) had been effective over a wide range of distances. Vi (GB) Indian Charlie Although Indian Charlie was no speedball, he was Sovereign Dancer Leo Castelli fast enough to win a 5 1/2Bfurlong maiden in August of Suspicious Native Soviet Sojourn his juvenile season. I find it interesting that his lengthy list of stakes winners is dominated by fillies, who account for all of his three Grade I winners and four of his five graded winners. Altogether, he has 19 fillies among his 30 stakes winners in North America. Could it be that fillies, which are generally smaller than their male counterparts, are that little bit easier to keep sound? Unbridled=s Song, another big stallion with Caro in his pedigree, has five fillies among his eight Grade I winners..

THT BLOODSTOCK: PATTERNS OF MOTION ANALYSIS WITH KERRY THOMAS AND PETE DENK KENTUCKY DERBY 147 | MAY 1, 2021 | THT BLOODSTOCK: PATTERNS OF MOTION | 1 KENTUCKY DERBY 2021 HERD DYNAMICS ANALYSIS A personal note from Kerry M. Thomas This year’s Kentucky Derby report was in jeopardy. Not because of all that has been going on in the world, but because the uncertainty and overwhelming emotional stress in my personal life had me close to pulling out the white flag. My dearly beloved life-partner Tonia, who had been battling cancer since the summer of 2018, passed away in March. Breast cancer had traveled to her brain, (my father died of brain cancer, also at home, in 2002) and two days after my birthday on October 22, 2020, we were told Tonia had 6 months to live. She passed on March 6th, 2021. Two days after Tonia left us, my mother, who I also am caregiver for, fell and fractured her hip. At the writing of this very sentence my mother is yet in a rehab facility struggling to recover. It goes without saying that as March churned into April, doing our 11th derby report wasn’t high on my list of things to do. But there was something that wasn’t right about not doing our analysis of the contenders. It was a quiet nudge I was unable to ignore. I just couldn’t let the horses run away from me. I began to realize that not doing the report wasn’t an option, I needed the distraction. Horses are my passion and racing is the sport I love.

Kentucky Derby Comments By Brock Sheridan Photos by Coady and Chelsea Durand #1 Known Agenda, 6-1 Drawing the inside post is his biggest problem. He won the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in his last start, and an allowance race, also at Gulfstream, before that on Feb. 26 and is trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Always Dreaming, 2017 and Super Saver, 2010). The Florida Derby has produced more Ken- tucky Derby winners than any other prep race (24) and six Kentucky Derby winners since 2000. Third in the Rem- sen (G2) won by Brooklyn Strong at Aqueduct on Dec. 5 and fifth in the Sam Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 6, Known Agenda looks to be a “getting good at the right time” horse with the addition of blinkers for his last two races. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a plus, even among the world’s best and post one. Known Agenda #2 Like the King, 50-1 Won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in his last race and his first career victory was on turf, so rac- ing on dirt for him is a question mark. In two starts on dirt, he was second in his career debut in July and third against allowance horses at Keeneland in October. Although this is the first Derby starter for trainer Wesley Ward, he has a reputation for his horses performing well on a world stage. Like the King #3 Brooklyn Strong, 50-1 Was the last to qualify for the Kentucky Derby as he made the field over the weekend when others were with- drawn.
